二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   What will the future school look like is difficult to make clear, but most experts(专家) agree that the school will be electronic in the future.

“Present-day schools will no longer exist in the next century,” says a report in The Age. “At that time, future schools will become community-style centers, which run seven days a week, 24 hours a day.” At the same time, computers will surely become a central part of the school in the future.

According to The Age, the distant learning will be popular and students will listen to teachers on computers. Going into classrooms on their computers, students will study at any time, which is very easy for them. However, it is necessary for students to go to the actual school in order to develop some social skills.

The Seashore Primary School is an imaginary school in the future created by the Education Department of Australia. At this school, all the teachers and students have laptop computers. Teachers check messages and call students back on a special telephone system and students use telephones to search for information or speak to their experts who teach their lessons. Besides, all the lessons are related to all sorts of subjects and all the students have their own learning plans created by teachers.

As one headmaster says, a laptop computer is students' library, data storage(数据存储)as well as the bridge to a wider world. Technology has changed the emphasis of future learning. Thus, we'll pay more attention to the learning of kids rather than the teaching.

1According to the report in The Age, students in future schools will .

A.mainly study online B.study at a set time

C.have no teachers D.never go to actual school

2The example of the Seashore Primary School is given to show   .

A.telephones are important in Australia B.how future schools will work

C.every student needs a learning plan D.students enjoy getting in touch with teachers

3What does the underlined word “emphasis” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.lesson B.score

    C.attitude D.focus

4Which of the following is the best title of the text?

A.The Schools in the Future B.Great Changes in Technology

C.The Seashore Primary School D.Actual Schools to Be Replaced

  • 22、Check out our tsunami facts and learn some interesting information related to these great walls of water that can cause so much destruction. Find out what causes tsunamis and read about some notable recent examples of tsunamis that have occurred around the globe.

Tsunamis are huge waves of water that are usually caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. As a tsunami approaches the shore, water may move back from the coast. If it is shallow enough, the water may be pulled back hundreds of meters. If you are in the area, observing this is a good indication that a tsunami is on the way.

Regions in tsunami danger zones often have warning systems in place to give people as much time to evacuate as possible. When tsunamis hit shallow water (often near the coast), they slow down but increase in height.

An earthquake in the Indian Ocean off Indonesia in December 2004 caused a tsunami that killed over 200,000 people in 14 countries. In March 2011, the Tohoku earthquake off the eastern coast of Japan caused a tsunami that was a major factor in the death of over 15,000 people. The tsunami waves created by the Tohoku earthquake reached heights of over 40 metres (131 feet) in mine areas, wiping out coastal towns and causing a number of nuclear accidents.

The Japanese word “tsunami” literally means “harbour wave”. Tsunamis are sometimes referred to as tidal waves but this term has fallen out of favour because tsunamis are not related to tides.

【1】Which of the following shows a tsunami is coming soon?

A.The water near the shore is pulled back.

B.The water marches towards the coast.

    C.An earthquake takes place.

D.The water near the shore is very shallow.

【2】In the Tohoku earthquake, over 15,000 people died mainly because of ________.

    A.the earthquake itself

    B.the lack of warning systems

C.the tsunami caused by the earthquake

D.the nuclear accidents caused by the tsunami

【3】What does the underlined word “evacuate” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Leave.

    B.Watch.

    C.Explore.

    D.Communicate.

【4】What can we learn from the passage?

A.There is no sign before the approach of a tsunami.

B.More people died in Indonesia tsunami than in Tohoku tsunami.

C.Some nuclear accidents happened after Indonesia tsunami.

D.The term “tidal wave” is used more often than “tsunami.”

  • 23、Creating devices that are better for the environment may involve working up a good sweat. That's because engineers are using sweat to make systems that store energy. One such device is a type of capacitor. It is powered by sweat and can be used to charge a device. Researchers at the University of Glasgow in Scotland developed the device. A capacitor is an electrical component that stores energy physically, in a form very much like static electricity. ( In contrast, batteries store energy chemically. )

The system recently developed is a supercapacitor. This is a capacitor with two conducting sur-faces on which a charge of energy is stored. The energy it stores can be used later. The energy could power an LED light or a type of electronic. Researchers described their new model May 11, 2020 in a scientific journal. The findings are exciting because devices powered by sweat could pave the way to wearable tech that is both safer and better for the environment. Today's wearable electronics include gadgets strapped to the body, such as watches and fitness trackers. However, engineers are also creating electronics that are part of clothing or stuck onto the skin.

Batteries power most wearable devices today. Yet those batteries often contain chemicals that can harm the environment. That's where the idea of using a bodily fluid comes into play. Electrolytes(电解质) are minerals in your body that have an electric charge. With the device, the sweat serves as the electrolyte. “That's kind of a new way of using sweat,” observes Mallika Bariya. She is a scientist at the University of California, Berkeley. She did not take part in the new study. She says electrolytes are an important part of these supercapacitors. They're needed for these devices to provide power. Sweat is interesting, not gross, she argues. It can tell you about someone's health. Also, the chemical makeup of sweat can change depending on what part of the body makes it.

    【1】How does a supercapacitor work?

A.It contains batteries that store energy chemically which could be used later to charge a device.

B.It contains batteries that store energy physically which could be used later to charge a device.

C.It is powered by sweat and store energy chemically which could be used later to charge a device.

D.It is powered by sweat and store energy physically which could be used later to charge a device.

【2】What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2?

A.A supercapacitor powered by sweat could charge wearable tech.

B.Wearable tech is safer and better for the environment.

C.A supercapacitor works with two conducting surfaces on which a charge of energy is stored.

D.Engineers are creating different electronics that are tied to the body with a strap.

【3】In what way does sweat replace harmful battery chemicals?

A.The sweat reacts with the chemicals and stores energy.

B.The sweat is mixed with electrolytes and changes its chemical makeup.

C.The sweat gets rid of some harmful chemicals.

D.The sweat contains minerals called electrolytes that have an electric charge.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A.Electrolytes play an important part in storing energy

B.Working up a sweat may one day power up a device

C.Supercapacitors are better for the environment

D.Batteries that power devices can harm the environment

  • 24、   A drowning boy was rescued by a group of beachgoers who formed a human chain to drag him from the powerful surf yesterday.

Joshua McQuoid,12, from Napier, New Zealand, was paddling when he was knocked off his feet and pulled into the sea by the strong undertow (潜流). His friend Hikiroa Ratapu raised the alarm but the current was so strong that rescuers, led by a German tourist and two policemen, were also repeatedly knocked down.

Another seven passersby joined the rescue. They held hands to form a human chain so they were finally steady enough to hold onto the schoolboy and pass him onto the beach at Napier's Marine Parade. Joshua was unconscious when he was finally rescued from the water and was given first aid on the sand.

He was then taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital and discharged later that day. Napier Constable Paul Bailey told the local news website that the boy would have drowned if he had not been able to pass the child along the human chain.

He said at one stage Joshua became lost in the surf and had become a “dead weight”. But the waves luckily knocked the schoolboy against Mr. Bailey's legs so he was able to grab him. He told the website, “Then we saw the human chain they'd formed and I was able to pass him over.”

His father thanked every person who helped save his son's life during an interview with RadioNewZealand. The video of the touching rescue effort filmed by a young bystander has already been viewed hundreds of times after being posted online. Joshua's mother Kath Kuru also showed her heartfelt thanks to all those who helped rescue him.

【1】How many people offered to help Joshua out of the sea?

B.he made a chain to save Joshua

C.Joshua came back to life in hospital

D.Joshua asked people to offer instant help

【3】What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.Joshua went to the beach alone.

B.Many people joined in the rescue.

    C.Joshua's father was interviewed again.

D.Joshua's parents showed thanks to all the rescuers.

【4】How do people most probably know about the rescue?

    A.By visiting the website.

    B.By listening to a speech.

    C.By reading the newspaper.

    D.By watching a TV program.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。续写词数应为150左右。

    A Simple Thank You

I have been in the teaching profession for more than thirty years, and one of the best teachers I have ever known was Mr Rowe. I was lucky enough to co-teach fourth grade with him.

Mr Rowe had infinite patience and understanding and I learned so much from watching him. He could perform miracles, like the one he performed with Steven, one of the unhappiest kids I ever saw. Steven couldn't stand school. He didn't like being picked last for kickball. He didn't like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly, he didn't like himself.

The first day he walked into Mr Rowe's classroom, he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of textbooks onto the floor.

Mr Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven's shoulder, but Steven pulled away. Nevertheless, Mr Rowe welcomed him: "Hi, Steven. I'm happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year." Steven looked around the room as if Mr Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom.

So, while Mr Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school, it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.

That day after classes, Mr Rowe chose Steven to pitch the kickball at recess. "Hey, Steven," Mr Rowe commented, "you are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret trick." Mr Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could perform. Steven learned fast and did quite well! Everyone cheered for him!

After the kickball, Steven sat as closer to Mr Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked, Steven lit up; he knew the answer! He raised his hands, when he answered the question, his voice shook. However, he got the answer right! He said, with Mr Rowe, his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful.

That is not to say that every day went smoothly, but it was evident that Steven grew to love Mr Rowe more and more with each passing day.

    Paragraph 1:

Time passed quickly that year, and before we all knew it, it was the last day of school.
