二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   One feature of a successful business is its ability to employ creativity to push into new territory (领域). Those with staying power, however, have mastered an often-ignored factor that allows them to focus on the future: empathy(共情). While that may surprise many, I am certain that the ability to connect with and relate to others is the force that moves business forward.

Though the concept of empathy might go against the modern concept a traditional workplace—competitive, the reality is that for business leaders to experience success, they need to not just see or hear the activity around them, but also relate to the people around.

Some may think they can achieve their goals without much thought for other people. This attitude works for some, but at some point-often sooner rather than later—everyone needs to depend on their relationships and build personal and professional connections. Successful people do not operate alone; each of us needs the support of others to achieve positive results that push us forward our goals.

Effectively understanding empathy involves regarding it as each person’s connection to the people and marketplace. A biological principle(原理) known as co-evolution (共同进化)explains that the adaptation of an organism (有机体)is caused by the change of a related object. Similarly, business and their leaders participate in co-evolution-type relationships. Business success depends on empathetic leaders who are able to adapt, build on the strengths around them, and relate to their environment. When businesses fail, it is often because leaders have stopped focusing on understanding their environment and instead stay separated in their own operations.

To develop an effective workforce, we must be willing to give in and meet people where they are. This can be uncomfortable, particularly when you feel like your position makes more sense or offers a better solution. A significant part of developing empathy, however, is learning to understand, respect and adopt another person’s point of view rather forcing your own.

1The author thinks that to achieve success, a company must ________.

    A.frequently develop in new areas

    B.always stay powerful enough

    C.focus on its future development

    D.have thought for its employees

2What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Never giving up is the key to success

    B.Few business leaders experience success

C.Support from others helps people achieve goals

D.Competitive seldom exists in traditional workplaces.

3Which of the following is the best example of co-evolution principle?

A.The principal is good at judging teachers’ points of view.

B.The CEO allows the engineers full freedom to choose their working hours.

C.The boss ignores the fact that his employees’ salary is below the average.

D.The manager refuses to reduce production despite the falling market demand.

  • 22、   There has been a large increase in the number of natural disasters over the past few years, and it is believed that global warming and climate change could cause even more disasters in the future. Some of the world's leading cities are facing disasters like floods and heat waves.

    London

London's flood defences are getting older. Since 1982, the Thames Barrier (泰晤士河屏障) has protected the city from the threat of flooding, but it was only designed to last until 2030 and close once every two or three years. About 32 years later the barrier now closes five or six times a year and according to Environment Agency                predictions, by 2050 the barrier will be closed on almost every tide if the problem is not solved.

There are 26 underground stations, 400 schools, 16 hospitals, an airport and 80 billion worth of property in London's flood risk area, so large scale flooding would be disastrous.

    Paris

Over a six-week period in July and August 2008, more than 11,400 - mainly elderly people - died in France from dehydration (脱水) and extremely high body temperature in a deadly heat wave. Heat waves of similar intensity (强度) are expected every seven years by 2050, so what can be done to make sure such disaster does not happen again?

One solution is to have air conditioners installed (安装) in elderly care homes. But this is considered a short-term solution, as the increase in demand for electricity also increases carbon emission (排放) .

In Paris the local authorities are encouraging architects to design new types of buildings such as the building “Flower Tower”, which uses a covering of bamboo to act as a natural air conditioner.

    Shanghai

Shanghai is the fastest growing city on Earth. It has a population of 18 million and is only four meters above sea level. Sea levels are predicted to rise by 20 cm within the next century.

About 250, 000 people move to Shanghai every year in search of work, placing extra demands on energy consumption. China depends heavily on coal-fired power stations, but these emissions increase temperatures and, in turn, warmer seas increase the risk of typhoons.

【1】What problem should be settled now in London?

A.How to protect the city's properly.

B.Where to build its flood defences.

C.How to use the Thames Barrier to protect the city.

D.How to improve the function of the old flood defences.

【2】Which of the following measures can't solve the heat wave disaster in Paris?

A.Putting up new types of buildings with a covering of bamboo.

B.Having air conditioners installed in elderly care homes.

C.Forbidding the city to build “Flower Tower”

D.Encouraging architects to design new types of buildings.

【3】The major threats to Shanghai are __________ .

A.increasing population and coal-fired power stations

    B.rising sea levels and typhoons

C.extremely high temperature and rising sea levels

D.extra demands on energy consumption and typhoons

【4】The purpose of the passage is to __________ .

A.tell us how to protect the big cities

B.give advice on how to defend natural disasters

C.explain what causes flood and heat waves

D.warn us of the increasing natural disasters in big cities

  • 23、Darrell Blatchley, a marine biologist and environmentalist based in the Philippine city of Davao, received a call from the Philippines, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (渔业与水产资源局) early Friday morning reporting a death of a young whale.

When the necropsy (尸检) was performed, Blatchley told NPR, he was not prepared for the amount of plastic they found in the whale’s stomach. “It was full of plastic nothing but nonstop plastic.” he said “It was filled to the point that its stomach was as hard as a baseball.” That means that this animal has been suffering not for days or weeks but for months or even a year or more,” Blatchley added.

Blatchley is the founder and owner of the D’Bone Collector Museum, a natural history museum in Davao. In the coming days, the museum will display all the items found in the whale’s system. Blatchley and his team work with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and other organizations to assist in rescue and recovery of marine animals.

“Within the last 10 years, we have recovered 61 whales and dolphins just within the Davao Gulf,” he said. “Of them, 57 have died due to man whether they took plastic or fishing nets or other waste, or gotten caught in pollution — and four were pregnant.”

Blatchley said he hoped that the latest incident would launch the issue of plastic pollution in the Philippines and across the globe. “If we keep going this way, it will be more uncommon to see an animal die of natural causes than it is to see an animal die of plastic,” he said.

【1】What can be inferred from the second paragraph?

A.The whale was starved to death.

B.The dead whale must have swallowed a baseball.

C.Blatchley was very shocked at what he found.

D.Blatchley didn’t make preparations for the necropsy.

【2】What will be shown in the D’Bone Collector Museum?

    A.Waste collected from the ocean.

B.Things found in the whale’s body.

C.The whole system of the whale.

    D.Many different tools of whaling.

【3】What does Blatchley think of plastic pollution in the Philippines?

    A.Worrying.

    B.Indifferent.

    C.Inspiring.

    D.Mild.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.A Whale Found Dead of Plastic

    B.Stand Up for Protecting Whales

    C.Plastic Threatening Our Existence

    D.Natural Death or Merciless Murder

  • 24、   We think of hospitals as peaceful and safe places. 1. A study that came out in 2017 showed that one in four doctors in China has suffered from physical violence, with some even losing their lives.

To prevent such things from happening, the government worked out a draft law. It says that the safety of medical staff is protected by law and that no one is allowed to hurt medical workers.

In most cases, the attackers were relatives of patients who were not satisfied with their treatment. 2. But of course, not every illness can be cured. 3. Giving doctors cash bribes (贿赂) to get good treatment has long been an unwritten rule. Some people believe that they were not well treated because they didn’t bribe their doctors. In some cases, their anger in this situation turns into violence. Another problem is a lack of doctors. 4, seeing as many as 60 or more patients in just half a day. It’s difficult for them to provide enough care for each patient.

    5. For example, many hospitals have set up offices to hear and handle patients’ complaints.

“When arguments happen, patients should ask for mediation (调解仲裁) or seek legal advice instead of turning to violence,” the State Council said.

    A. Doctors need to take measures to protect themselves

    B. Most people have high expectations for their doctors

    C. Hospitals are trying to find ways to solve this problem

    D. Doctors in large public hospitals often have to overwork

    E. A general lack of trust in doctors has also made things worse

    F. It’s difficult to solve the problems between doctors and patients

    G. But doctors and nurses in Chinese public hospitals are often attacked
