二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Scotland's Gaelic language has been disappearing at a shocking rate for years. With only 60,000 speakers left, the language has been marked as "endangered".

But Gaelic is fighting back. As we drove through the Scottish Highlands, one of the first things I noticed was that all of the road signs were in Gaelic as well as in English. We didn't hear Gaelic being spoken on the streets or in the shops, bars or restaurants around the Isle of Skye, but at the college of Sabhal Mor Ostaig it was all we heard. In the classrooms. in the playground, in the cafes-everyone was speaking Gaelic.

Across Scotland, increasing numbers of parents are choosing to put their children in Gaelic education. Some of those parents don't even speak the language themselves. Flora Guidi is the headteacher of Portree Primary School. She said when she started teaching 28 years ago there were only nine children in the Gaelic unit. But now around half of the children at the school are being taught only in the Gaelic language. Next year a new school is opening in Portree which will only teach in Gaelic to meet the demand.

Over the past years there has been support from the government for the Gaelic language. And there is also a big increase in spending on Gaelic education.

It has caused a great deal of discussion. For some in Scotland, Gaelic is just an unimportant language from Scottish history. But for the people I spoke to on the Isle of Skye, there is a real hope that the young Gaelic speakers will revitalize(复兴)the language that is tied up with their country's identity.

A.She teaches Gaelic in this school.

B.All subjects are taught in Gaelic.

C.There were only nine students in the school 28 years ago.

D.About half of the students are taught in Gaelic now.

  • 22、Driving to the airport in the early morning, I felt excited. Although I was heading abroad for my first time alone, I felt cheerful and enthusiastic. I was spending the summer in Paris.

While looking for more interesting things to do besides sleeping and eating, I found programs for learning languages abroad, and jumped at the chance to study French in this city known for its art, fashion, food, and culture. As I arrived at the airport where I would leave my family, I still felt only great happiness. I excitedly made my way through security, leaving my loved ones behind.

My connecting flight was in Frankfurt, Germany, 14hours from Denver. Sitting in a crowded plane watching bad movies couldn’t dampen my excitement. When the woman next to me asked me where I was going, I happily answered and was pleased to note a tone of jealousy in her response.

But when I arrived in Frankfurt, fear and anxiety began to set in. Being in an enormous, busy building in a country where I couldn’t speak the language was frightening, but as I found my way, I gained confidence. When I boarded the second plane and discovered that the flight was less than an hour, I was filled with excitement as I thought of how I would manage in a country with a new language.

When I stepped on the ground of Pairs for the first time, I was extremely happy and excited. I gathered my bags and joined the crowd of people waiting for friends and family. I quickly had my first experience trying to communicate in a language that I had only practiced in school. As I left the airport, I looked for familiar monuments I had read about, but the landscape looked very ordinary. Then, with one sharp turn, the Eiffel Tower came into view, and I was finally in Pairs.

  • 23、If you have lived in New York City for many years, like I have, the skyline becomes part of you and your daily life.

When I was invited to visit the recently completed Summit One Vanderbilt, New York’s fourth-highest tower, I wasn’t expecting much. I felt like I’d seen it all and I thought that this observation deck (观测台) would be another space for a view of the city, but nothing else.

Let me tell you something: I have never seen one like this before. It sits on top of a building on 42nd street and Vanderbilt, right next to Grand Central Station. Once you have ascended to the top floor, you step into air, which makes you feel like being at l,000 feet above ground level with its mirrored floors. Once you make your way throughout the space, you feel like New York is part of a body, and your sense of space is challenged by the reflections of the light. The reflections create endless possibilities for photos and videos, and the light changes throughout the day. I took out my camera and began to take photos, feeling a connection with the city that no other observatory has been able to give me.

Summit is something unique, an art work with architecture. It will be an observatory that will change with the city. I personally can’t wait to take photos at sunset, or when winter arrives.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I was an impatient mother and frustration always kept me from enjoying life, until some strange insects came to my family.

It was Friday. We were having friends over for dinner, but Mike had to stay late at work. I was now on my own to get everything ready for the night. I could feel my frustration increasing as I drove to pick up Haydn and Michael from school. I rushed them into the car and told them that we were making a few stops before heading home, and that they needed to help me tidy the house. Both of them started complaining immediately. I turned and gave them fair warning that I was not in the mood to listen. For the next hour, I dragged the boys from one place to the next…

Just as we finished our last task, the boys reminded me that we needed to stop at the pet store to pick up crickets (蟋蟀) for their lizards(蜥蜴). Fifteen minutes later, I pulled into the driveway with only forty-five minutes left to unpack the car, clean the house, and set the table before my guests arrived. How would I make it?

I started barking orders at the boys, but they were focused on pouring the crickets from the plastic bag into the top of their little cricket container. I just let off steam and yelled at them to hurry up.

I didn’t really know how it happened, but the next time I looked up, one hundred crickets were jumping all over my kitchen…

My frustration exploded. I could feel myself about to start yelling in a way I rarely do. I watched my two sweet boys try anxiously to chase the crickets, screaming with laughter. Strangely, I felt something different.

In that split second, I realized I had two choices. Could I continue feeling annoyed and angry, or could I let go and enjoy this silly moment?
