二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   What's black and white and read all over? Not newspapers, at least not anymore. In fact, if you're like most young people, you probably don't read the newspaper at all.

In one recent survey, just 19 percent of 18-to-34-year-olds said they read a newspaper every day, while 37 percent watch local TV news and 44 percent visit Internet news sites daily. As people turn more and more to new technologies, they turn the pages of newspapers less and less. "There's a revolution (革命) in the way young people get news." says media consultant Merrill Brown. Just a generation (一代人) or two agothe newspaper was the main way that many people got their news. Now, nearly every home has at least one TV set. There's high-speed, wireless Internet both at home and in many public places.

You no longer have to wait for a bundle of newsprint to arrive on your doorstep every morning. Thanks to new technology, if you want to know what's going on in the world, you can get breaking news immediately in more ways than one. So newspapers face a very big challenge. Raised on MTV and video games, today's kids and young adults want flashy displays, special effects, quick information, and the chance to interact (互动) in real time, even when they're reading about serious problems.

If newspapers can't find creative ways to be more than just ink on paper, some experts suggest, they might disappear completely. Traditional newspaper articles are supposed to be read from beginning to end, lack of interaction. With Web pages, on the other hand, there's more freedom. You can look through the things you're interested in, then follow links to other sources. You can join discussion groups, read other peopled opinions on a topic, or start a blog to express your own views.

1What is the passage mainly about?

A.The new technologies. B.Different news sources.

C.The future of the Internet. D.The disappearing newspaper.

2What can be inferred from the survey?

A.TV has become the major source of news.

B.New technologies have replaced the traditional one.

C.Newspapers are no longer the major source of news.

D.More than half of the 18-to-34-year-olds visit news sites daily.

3Why do newspapers face a big challenge?

    A.Newspapers are full of changes.

    B.Newspapers provide interactions.

C.New technologies attract all the people.

D.Getting news from other ways is quicker.

4According to the passage, how will the future of the newspaper be?

    A.Uncertain. B.Promising. C.Bright. D.Surprising.

  • 24、I had to knock on the taxi to get his attention. Finally, the driver, a man about 60, looked up from behind the wheel and apologised, “I’m sorry, but I was reading a letter.” He sounded as if he had a cold or a cough.

Since I was in no hurry, I told him to finish his letter. He shook his head, explaining that he had already read it several times and almost knew it by heart. Curious, I asked whether it was from a child or maybe a grandchild. “This isn’t family,” he replied, “though he might just as well have been are regular member of the family. Old Ed and I grew up together.”

They were always friends. But since he moved away from the neighbourhood 30 years ago, it’d generally just been postcards at Christmas time between them. A couple of weeks ago, Ed died. “I should have kept in touch.” He repeated this, more to himself than to me. To comfort him, I said sometimes we just didn’t seem to find the time. “But we used to find the time,” he said. “Take a look.” He handed the letter over to me.

The first sentence “I’ve been meaning to write for some time, but I’ve always delayed it.” reminded me of myself. It went on to say that he often thought about the good times they had had together. When I read the part where it said “Your friendship really means a lot to me, more than I can say because I’m not good at saying things like that”, I found myself nodding in agreement.

We had gone several kilometres and were almost at my hotel, so I read the last paragraph: “So I thought you’d like to know that I was thinking of you.” And it was ended with “Your Old Friend, Tom.”

“I thought your friend’s name was Ed,” I said.

“I’m Tom,” he explained. “It’s a letter I wrote to Ed before I knew he’d died. I never put it in the mailbox. I guess I should have written it sooner.” His face was pale as he wiped his eyes with a handkerchief.

When I got to my hotel room I didn’t unpack right away, I had to write a letter and post it.

    【1】Who wrote the letter?

    A.Tom.

    B.Old Ed.

    C.The author.

    D.The driver’s grandchild.

【2】What can be inferred from the passage about the driver?

A.The driver regretted missing Ed’s funeral.

B.The driver regretted moving away from his neighbourhood.

C.The driver regretted forgetting to send Ed Christmas cards.

D.The driver regretted not being able to keep in touch with Ed.

【3】What can learn about the author from Paragraph 4?

A.The author often failed to write to his friends.

B.The author had no intention to write to his friends.

C.The author had many great moments with his friends.

D.The author was good at expressing feelings to his friends.

B.Life is unpredictable, so live each day as if it were your last.
