二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Everyone gets anxious when the world takes an uncertain turn. And often, we treat that anxiety with a little panic buying.

A study published last year in the Journal of Consumer Research found that people buy things in troubled times as a means of keeping control over their lives. The researchers noted that utility items — specifically, cleaning products — tend to move most quickly from store shelves. The hoarding (囤积) of toilet paper, as perhaps the most fundamental cleaning product, may represent our most fundamental fears. An invisible enemy moves slowly and quietly towards us. We need to hold on to something in uncertain times. Maybe a hoard of toilet paper brings promises.

The thing is, it’s not actually going anywhere. For all the sharp words and even sharper elbows thrown around by the crazy toilet paper shoppers, they seem to be missing one essential fact: There is no toilet paper shortage.

As The New York Times points out, shop owners that see their shelves emptied often fill up the shelves again in a day, often in just a few hours.

“You are not using more of it. You are just filling up your closet with it,” Jeff Anderson, president of paper product manufacturer Precision Paper Converters, tells the Times.

The thing is, the toilet paper-obsessed shoppers have been infected with something many times more contagious (感染性的) than any coronavirus: fear.

“People are social creatures. We look to each other for cues for what is safe and what is dangerous,” Steven Taylor, a clinical psychologist at the University of British Columbia, tells Fox News. “And when you see someone in the store panic-buying, that can cause a fear contagion effect. People become anxious ahead of the actual infection. They haven’t thought about the bigger picture, like what are the consequences of hoarding toilet paper.”

【1】Why do shoppers have a panic toilet paper buying?

A.The world is on the turning point.

B.It guarantees their victory over coronavirus.

C.There is no adequate supply in the store at all.

D.It comes as a way of anxiety relief.

【2】By describing the scene of our defense against an enemy in paragraph 2, the author intends to    .

A.explain the reasons for a panic toilet paper buying.

B.warn us of the danger of an enemy.

C.remind us of the threat of any coronavirus.

D.teach us the method of handling a problem.

【3】What is the author’s attitude toward the hoarding toilet paper?

    A.Uninterested.

    B.Negative.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Curious.

  • 22、On the night of November 14, 1978, a six-year-old Korean boy was flying to the United States. All he knew was that he was on a plane heading for somewhere. The plane landed at Kennedy International Airport, where he was greeted by a family. This young boy was me.

I have grown up in a town where there were few Asians, so I stuck out in the crowd. I made friends quickly and they treated me just like anyone else. You may ask if anyone made fun of my appearance. Well, of course, I met that kind of person. I just treated it as if it wasn’t important.

As an adopted child, I have something that others don’t have. I have had the benefit of two families. I’m lucky to have got a chance to start a new life. But we must try never to forget our past. Someday I will go back to Korea to find out what kind of culture I left behind.

There is only one thing that I regret about being adopted. When I argue with my parents and they realize they are losing the argument, they sometimes wonder what I would be doing if I were back in Korea. I don’t understand this because I thought the purpose of adopting someone was to give them a better chance of growing up in a family. Some day when I am older, I want to adopt a girl and raise her the way my parents have raised me, but I would do it better, for I know what went well and what did not.

【1】We learn that when the writer was on the way to his new family, ________.

A.he stayed with his own parents

B.he was very happy and excited

C.he was about ten years old then

D.he didn’t know he would be adopted

【2】What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

A.He wants to forget his past.

B.He isn’t sad about being adopted.

C.He isn’t interested in Korean culture.

D.He doesn’t know anything about Korea.

【3】What does the author want to do when he is older?

A.Adopt a girl and raise her in a good way.

B.Go back to live with his parents in Korea.

C.Tell his parents what they have done wrong.

D.Find out how to raise children in a better way.

  • 23、   Most people have been taught that losing weight is a matter of simple math. Cut calories—specifically 3,500 calories, and you’ll lose a pound. But as it turns out, experts are learning that this decades-old strategy is actually pretty misguided. “This idea of ‘a calorie in and a calorie out’ when it comes to weight loss is not only outdated, it’s just wrong,” says Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, an obesity specialist at Harvard Medical School. The truth is that even careful calorie calculations don’t always yield(产生) uniform results.

How your body burns calories depends on a number of factors. Three factors affect how your body processes calories.

Your gut microbiome (肠道微生物). Trillions of organisms live in your gut, and the important types may influence how many calories your body absorbs from food. This may occur because some types of organisms are able to break down and use more calories from certain foods than other types of organisms. Researchers have found that people who are naturally thin have different types of organisms living inside them than those who are overweight.

Your metabolism (新陈代谢). Each body has a “set point” that governs weight, says Dr. Stanford. This set point reflects several factors, including your genes, your environment, and your behaviors. A region at the base of your brain stands guard to keep your body weight from dipping below that set point—which is not really a bonus if you’re trying to lose weight.

The type of food you eat. Your food choices may also influence your calorie intake, and not just because of their specific calorie content. One 2019 study published in Cell Metabolism found that eating processed foods seems to spur people to eat more calories compared with eating unprocessed foods.

If counting calories isn’t a dependable way to manage your weight, what can you do to shed extra pounds? Dr.

    Stanford recommends the following.

Focus on diet quality. When planning your meals, focus on choosing unprocessed foods, including lean meats, whole grains, and lots of fruits and vegetables in their natural form.

Exercise regularly. Aim to get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week. Moderate exercise is done at a level where you can talk, but not sing.

Consult a professional. “A lot of people believe it’s a moral failing if they are unable to lose weight,” says Dr. Stanford. But it’s not. As with other medical conditions, many people will need help from a doctor. Successful weight loss may require more than just diet and exercise. “Only 2% of people who meet the criteria for the use of anti-obesity medications actually get them. This means that 98% of people who could be treated aren’t,” she says, “Don’t be afraid to seek help if you need it.”

1What can we infer from Paragraph 1?

    A.Old theories actually mislead us.

B.Losing weight lies in losing calorie.

C.Calorie calculations lead to good results.

D.Losing weight by losing calorie is outdated.

2The processing of calories is affected by how you ______.

A.choose the types of food you consume

B.focus on the quality of your diet

C.adjust your brain to the “set point”

D.reduce the organisms living in your gut

3The underlined word “shed” in Paragraph 6 means “______”.

    A.weigh B.produce

    C.lose D.cost

4It is implied in the passage that ______.

A.cutting calories is essential for weight loss

    B.losing weight can be double-edged

C.healthy eating keeps you losing weight

D.a healthy lifestyle is key to weight loss

  • 24、By 2050, our global population might have been beyond nine billion, bringing with it an expected 70% increase in global demand for meat and fish. As a result, the growing demand for soya-based farm feed is driving massive destruction of forests at an alarming rate, and sea animal populations have halved in the last four decades due to widespread overfishing.

With 10 million pounds funding, part of the Government’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, a start-up company Entocycle is leading a cooperation that will build the UK’s first industrial-scale insect farm. Black soldier flies(黑水虻)are used to convert food waste from farms and factories into a sustainable, organic insect-based protein feed, as an alternative to soya, for farmed animals, namely pigs, chicken and fish. In short the company is using food waste to create insect protein to feed the animals that we eat, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions(排放)and deforestation.

Following its formation in 2017, Entocycle spent time developing its technology as part of the European Space Agency Business Incubation Centre United Kingdom(ESA BIC UK), which is managed and partly funded by STFC. Entocycle acquired the expert knowledge to develop a network of cutting edge sensors, originally designed for use in space, to monitor and optimize(优化)the black soldier flies’ lifecycle. They combined this with big data analysis to develop their proprietary technology to mass-rear flies, scalable for industrial use, STFC’s Dr Sue O’Hare, Operations Manager at the ESA BIC UK, said, “Entocycle is a first-class example of how space technology can be applied to address one of the most important global challenges we currently face —how to feed the world without harming our planet.”

It is fantastic to know that the ESA BIC UK, part of the world’s largest business incubation program for space tech start-ups, was able to provide the right environment and support to play a part in the early development of this world-changing technology. This is a significant milestone for Entocycle as it seeks to make a real and positive impact on making our food supply chains more environmentally sustainable.
