  • 22、Last summer I went through a training program and became a literacy volunteer (扫盲志愿者). The training I received, though excellent, didn't tell me how it was to work with a real student, however. When I began to discover what other people’s lives were like because they could not read, I realized the true importance of reading.

My first student Marie was a 44-year-old single mother of three children. In the first lesson, I found out she walked two miles to the nearest supermarket twice a week because she didn't know which bus to take. When I told her I would get her a bus schedule, she told me it would not help because she couldn't read it. She said she also had difficulty once she got to the supermarket because she couldn't always remember what she needed. Also, she could only recognize items by sight, so if the product had a different label, she would not recognize it as the product she wanted.

As we worked together, learning how to read built Marie’s self-confidence. She began to make rapid progress and was even able to take the bus to the supermarket. After this successful trip, she reported how self-confident she felt. At the end of the program, she began helping her youngest son, Tony, a shy first grader, with his reading. I found that helping Marie to build her self-confidence was more rewarding than anything I had ever done before.

As a literacy volunteer, I learned a great deal about teaching and helping others. In fact, I may have learned more from the experience than Marie did.

【1】What did the writer do last summer?

    A.She worked in the supermarket.

B.She helped someone to learn to read.

    C.She helped some single mothers.

D.She was trained by a literacy volunteer.

【2】Why didn't Marie go to the supermarket by bus at first?

A.Because she liked to walk to the supermarket.

    B.Because she didn't have a bus schedule.

C.Because she couldn't afford the bus ticket.

D.Because she couldn't find the right bus.

【3】How did Marie use to find the goods she wanted in the supermarket?

A.She knew where the goods were in the supermarket.

B.She asked others to take her to the right place.

C.She managed to find the goods by their looks.

D.She remembered the names of the goods.

【4】Which of the statements is TRUE about Marie?

A.She could do many things she had not been able to before.

B.She was able to read stories with the help of her son.

C.She decided to continue her studies in school.

D.She helped to build up my self-confidence.

  • 23、180 Toronto buildings have given up energy intensive (密集的) air-conditioning in favor of cooling by pumping cold water from the depths of Lake Ontario through pipes in the walls and floors. These include City Hall, Toronto General Hospital, hotels, data centers, and the Scotiabank Arena, home to the Raptors basketball team — altogether the 54 million square feet of real estate (房地产) saves 90,000 megawatt hours of electricity annually, which is enough to power 25,000 homes.

The Deep Lake Water Cooling (DLWC) system of Toronto is the largest of its kind on Earth. It relies on three pipes lying 3.5 miles south of the city, 280 feet below the lake, which bring in the 4°C water before pumping it to a central station that then sends it through to the buildings. Warm water running out of the buildings is pumped back into the lake to make up the difference, taking the heat it takes in with it.

A big project related to DLWC in Toronto is called The Well. It is a thermal storage system using a two-million gallon tank of cold water from the lake which can store energy at night during off-peak times, easing (缓解) the pressure on the electricity net and reducing costs. This will open the door to another 17 million square feet of real estate.

DLWC isn’t the only method of cooling buildings with water; the other involves evaporating (蒸发) water using large tanks as a means of getting rid of heat. However, this leads to mass water usage, and DLWC can keep 220 million gallons of water in the lake, in the pipes, or in the ground, compared to evaporative cooling.

DLWC isn’t something every city or building can use, but some buildings, like the million square foot HSBC Headquarters in Hong Kong, are cooled with seawater instead.

【1】What can we learn about DLWC from the text?

A.It is used only in the city of Toronto.

    B.It requires much more electricity.

C.It wastes lots of natural water.

D.It uses water circulation to cool homes.

    【2】What can The Well do?

    A.Freshen the air.

    B.Store energy.

    C.Clean water.

    D.Produce power.

【3】What is the disadvantage of the air-conditioning by evaporating water?

    A.It is low-tech.

    B.It uses up much water.

C.It is expensive to set up.

D.It is only fit for small buildings.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Today’s Toronto City

    B.Heat Storage Systems

    C.The DLWC of Toronto

    D.Methods of Air Cooling

  • 24、In the age of the Internet, everyone writes. 【1】 It doesn’t matter how intellectually wise you’re, it is only important that people understand.

    Use strong words.

Good writing contains unpredictability and unexpectedness. The most powerful part of language is the verb. Thanks to a strong word, a simple sentence gets a very strong emotional charge and affects the person reading it. 【2】 Write “uses” instead of “exploits (利用)”, if you feel that the first word expresses your idea more clearly and understandably.

    Read a lot.

A film flows by itself, whether you are aware of what is happening on the screen or not. 【3】 When you make a conscious effort in your reading comprehension, you become able to reflect, which is a great way to practise your writing skills. Read a variety of books—your writing and cognitive (认知的) skills increase automatically when you read a lot.

    Start a diary.

A diary is not only a great tool for reflection but can also be your rough draft for developing your writing skills. Not only can you write in a journal, but you can do sketches (概述), draw diagrams and create tables. Before going to bed, you can describe all the things that happened to you during the day in a diary. 【4】

The most important tip: Write by hand.

【5】 When you write by hand, you are free to cross out, underline, highlight and rearrange phrases. Also, many scientists agree that hand motor skills activate parts of the brain that go untapped when you type.

A.Writing on a computer is a limited experience.

B.However, a strong word doesn’t always mean being complex.

C.A book, however, requires the brain to be active from beginning to end.

D.Reading widely will improve your vocabulary and understanding ability.

E.Many students think of writing as the hardest skill to master, but this isn’t true.

F.First of all, remember: The most important thing in any written message is simplicity.

G.In doing so, pay attention to each sentence and try to figure out which words fit better.
