  • 21、How to pack for a trip

Make a checklist of every item you plan to take on your trip.

This will include clothing, shoes and paperwork and possibly also maps, guidebooks, and reading material. Never underestimate how quickly your pace will fill up. Will you really need five pairs of shoes for three nights? And four coats? 【1】 You might want to visit www.weatherchannel.com to checkout how the weather will be at your destination.

Plan your items ahead of time to avoid over-packing.

If you have a good sense of what the weather will be like, you can be very careful in your planning. If not, bring versatile(万能的)items that will allow you to adapt to changing conditions. 【2】 If you won’t have an opportunity to wash your clothes, putting them away in a separate bag will keep you from having to mix the clean with the dirty.

If you will be going through customs, check your suitcase before packing.

Ensure that it is completely empty (especially if the suitcase is not yours), because as soon as you’re in a security check, no one is responsible for its contents except you. Usually, suitcases have hidden zippers(拉链)along the center or side. Open these and give it a good once-over. 【3】

    Buy wide clip rings(扣环).

Clip important things like the passport baggie onto your handbag or carry-on and clip that to your suitcase. Keep paperwork, money, and expensive items hanging over your shoulder or even hidden on your body depending on the safety of the location. 【4】

Bring snacks in case you get hungry.

【5】 If you have conditions that call for certain foods and won’t have many options while traveling, bring more filling snacks.

A.It is better to be safe than sorry.

B.Bring empty plastic bags for dirty items.

C.Place heavy items at the bottom of your bag.

D.You can simply use what the hotel provides.

E.However, don’t hide anything you will need immediately.

F.Consider the weather and what kinds of activities you will be doing.

G.Bring light snacks for quick trips or places where you can buy meals.

  • 22、   We are reading so many books, watching so many movies and meeting so many people. What's the point if we forget all of them? 【1】 If you never want to forget another birthday, name, or fact, keep the tricks in mind.

    Memory palace

By far the most important trick to have a superhuman memory is learning to use a memory palace. A memory palace can be any structure, but it helps if it is emotional and specific. Childhood homes are great memory palaces. 【2】

For instance, my memory palace is the house I grew up in. When I need to memorize a list of things for a test quickly, I walk into my childhood home in my mind, open a drawer on my left and put the first thing I need to memorize in it. I keep doing it until all of the knowledge is settled well.

    Tell someone about it

This is my favorite one. If you want to remember a book you just read or recall an interesting podcast you just heard, you can explain it to people around you. 【3】 So when your teachers bug you to “put it in your own words”, they are right.

    【4】

If you need to memorize a speech, picture yourself in the place you will be when you give the speech. This is related to the reason the memory palace works well. We are visual (视觉的)and location mapping creatures. Our ancestors could remember the huge swaths of land and the location of every single plant. It's what their brain evolved to do. If you want to recall something more clearly, make sure you picture the right location as you memorize it. It's even better if you can actually be in the place.

    “How was your day?” trick

When a close friend asks me “How was your day?”,I have a habit of quickly summing up a few cool things I've learned. 【5】 Of course, I wouldn't do this to someone who is just asking to be polite.

    A.Visualize the right location.

B.Draw a picture before your tasks.

C.There is old stuff in these houses.

D.Putting things in our own words literally changes our brains.

E.Because there is a deep memory mixed with a lot of emotion.

F.Luckily, with some tricks, our memory can be improved markedly.

G.In my opinion, it is a good opportunity to review the most important things in your day.

  • 23、A businessman was at a pier (码头) in a small coastal village when a small boat with just one fisherman stopped. Inside the small boat were several large fish. The businessman asked how long it took to catch them.

The fisherman replied, “Only a little while.” The businessman then asked why he didn’t stay out longer and catch more fish. The fisherman said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs.

The businessman then asked the fisherman how he spent the rest of his time. The fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a rest with my wife, Maria, walk into the village each evening where I drink wine and play the guitar with my friends. I have a full and busy life, sir.”

The businessman laughed, “You should spend more time fishing and earn more money. Then you can buy more boats, and finally you would have a group of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman, you would sell directly to the processor, finally opening your own cannery (罐头食品厂). You would control the product, process and distribution (配送). You’ll run your expanding business.”

The fisherman asked, “But sir, how long will this all take?”

The businessman replied, “15 to 20 years.”

“But what then, sir?” asked the fisherman.

The businessman laughed, and said, “That’s the best part! When the time is right, you would sell your company stock to the public. You’ll become very rich!”

“Millions, sir?” replied the fisherman. “Then what?”

“Then you would retire, move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take a rest with your wife, walk to the village in the evenings where you could drink wine and play your guitar with your friends.”

【1】Why didn’t the fisherman want to get more fish?

A.It was hard to catch fish.

B.He had only a small boat.

C.He was very tired at that time.

D.He was satisfied with his work.

【2】How did the fisherman think of his life?

    A.Simple but poor.

    B.Full and happy.

    C.Too busy.

    D.Too dull.

【3】In the businessman’s opinion, the fisherman should ________.

    A.expand his business

EUROPE is home to a variety of cultural treasures. Lonely Planet has offered pairs of cities for culture-hungry but time-poor travelers.

    London and Paris

It takes you about two hours to travel from London to Paris by Eurostar, a high-speed railway service. The two capital cities have been competing in fashion, art and nightlife for decades—but each secretly looks up to the other.

No one can doubt the grand and impressive beauty of Paris’ Louvre Museum, but if you want to save money, you cannot skip the British Museum free to visit. Compared with London, Paris has more outdoor attractions, such as the beautiful green walkway La Promenade Plantee.

In Paris, you’ll see diners linger (逗留) over red wine. While in London, you can try some afternoon tea, eat fish and chips or salted cake.

     Vienna and Bratislava

Austrian capital Vienna and Slovakia city Bratislava are an hour apart by train. But since they are linked by the Danube River, the best way to travel is by ship. A tour of the two cities is the perfect way to experience everything from 17th century’s Habsburg dynasty splendor to sci-fi restaurants.

Vienna is famous for Mozart and imperial palaces. You can appreciate the perfect blending of architecture and nature in the grand Scholoss Schonbrunn Palace, and reward yourself with a cup of Vienna coffee, which has made its way to the world’s cultural heritage list.

Bratislava is best known for its fine dining—the remarkable UFO restaurant. You can enjoy a meat–laden dinner here in an amazing setting.
