21、Four Simple Keys to Transform Your Life
The Power of Choice.Every one of us makes countless choices every day.Every choice we make has an impact on our lives.Even insignificant choices can affect what we experience and how we feel. When hunger strikes, we can reach for a healthy, nutritious snack, or we can choose the sugar high of junk food. The more important the decision, the greater its effect. For instance, how do I act towards that person who treated me badly? Do I generally choose to be passive, or do I actively set clear intentions and create what I want in my life? Every choice we make, however big or small, affects us in some way.
How Do You Make Choices? If you are interested in living a richer, fuller life, there is a foundation upon which you can base all of your decisions which can make life better not only for you, but also for those around you. This foundation is to choose based on what's best for all.Imagine a world where every parent, spouse(配偶), friend, teacher, business person, and politician truly did their best to choose what's best for all involved in every decision they made. We would certainly live in a more caring, supportive world.
It's the Intention."But how do I know what is really best?" you might ask.The answer is simple. It doesn't matter. What matters is not the choice you make, but rather the intention beind your choice. What matters is that whatever decision you make, you are clear in your intention of choosing based on what's best for all.If it later turns out that you made what appears to have been a bad choice, there's no need for guilt.Knowing that you did your best to choose with a sincere desire for what's best for all, your conscience stays clear and open. This then allows you to more easily learn from your mistakes, and to live with a clear heart and mind.
What's Best for Me, Too! Choosing what's best does not mean you have to always sacrifice yourself for others. An overly(过度的) exhausted mother can lose her temper easily. Some time off for this mother might seem selfish, yet in the long run, it can help her to be a better mother to her children. So as we move through each day of our lives, let us remember to include ourselves as we do our best to choose what's best for all.
【1】Which of the following is FALSE?
A.Whenever hunger strikes, we will reach for a junk snack

【2】How should we make choices?
A.To be interested in a richer, fuller life.
B.To make life better for ourselves.
C.To imagine a world where everyone did their best.
D.To choose based on what's best for all.
【3】Why does the author say, "What matters is not the choice you make, but rather the intention behind your choice."?
A.Because the choice you make is not important.
B.Because you may have made a bad choice.
C.Because this allows you to stay clear and improve.
D.Because there is no need for guilt.
【4】How to choose what is best for us?
A.We need to devote all our life to others.
B.We need to put away some time for ourselves.
C.We need to sacrifice ourselves for others.
D.We need to be selfless every minute.
22、Today an electric light is the most commonly used device in our daily lives. We need them to provide light for houses, buildings, and streets. We also have handheld lights that have a backup (后备) time of more than 12 hours. The technology that we use today may be different from the past, but what we have today can be traced all the way back to the invention of the electric light.
Efforts to create a working electric light go back to 1800 when an Italian scientist named Alessandro Volta, during his experiments on the development of electric batteries, observed that when a copper (铜) wire connected the two ends of the battery, it starts to glow due to the passage of electricity. The electric battery he invented then became the source of many electric experiments.
Researches and developments on the electric light were continued by many inventors. It is said that the electric light was invented by 20 inventors before Thomas Edison.
The main problem in the developments of the electric light was the filament (灯丝) inside it; it didn't last very long and melted very quickly. In this regard, Thomas Edison was very important in the development of the electric light.
Edison started developing and testing new filaments that could last longer. He tested many materials and finally developed a filament that could last for 13.5 hours, which proved that he was moving in the right direction. He tried more than 3,000 electric light designs and 6,000 different filament materials. Finally, he found a filament that could last for more than 1,200 hours.
Edison became successful not just because he developed a long-lasting filament. He also developed the entire electric lighting system, including the sockets (插孔) and switches. He also made the first steam-generating power station in 1882.

23、Westsider Rare & Used Books bookstore is a big name on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. It’s the type of old shop where you can wander narrow walkways for hours while looking through towering shelves stuffed with books ranging from cheap, used copies to rare collections. The store has even been used as a setting in several films.
In January, a neighborhood resident Bobby Panza, saw the Westsider was having a going-out-of-business sale. He also read a story on a local blog in which store owner Dorian Thornley made an “off the cuff (即兴的)” remark that the store could stay open if it could raise $50,000 — “don’t see that happening, though,” Thornley mentioned at the time.
Panza, who had never formally met Thornley but had shopped at the store for a decade, started a GoFundMe campaign. In just four days, 850 people donated from $5 to thousands of dollars each and raised $54,000.
With the money, Thornley updated (更新) the store’s selection of used and rare books and reorganized the interior (内部) of the bookstore. Thornley also intended to buy advertising for his store, but the publicity from the GoFundMe campaign has helped raise awareness and helped boost (提高) Westsider’s sales by nearly 25%. Thornley has saved some of the money to ensure Westsider won’t fall behind on its rent again.
Thornley found out about the crowdfunding effort the day after it started when a customer asked whether Thornley was serious about keeping the store open for good if $50,000 could be raised. When he told her he was serious, the customer — a local writer named Sally Klingenstein Martell — donated $10,000 to get the effort off the ground. Thornley calls Martell’s significant donation “the motivator for everyone else donating”.
Whether the money will be enough to permanently save the business remains to be seen. But now that Westsider has avoided the worst, Thornley is trying to make that happen.

24、 As an internet influencer, there seems to be nothing special about Miquela Sousa. The 19-year-old lives in Los Angeles, US, posts pictures of herself sporting fashionable looks, and has just made her way into the March edition of Vogue magazine. But Miquela isn’t real – she is an electronic character.
Her fans don’t seem to mind – she has 855,000 followers on US social networking platform Instagram. And her first single Not Mine – yes, she “sings” too – also reached No 8 on music streaming (流媒体) platform Spotify last August.
It’s kind of curious that in a time when authenticity (真实性) and “being real” are valued more than ever, “fake” celebrities like Miquela are appreciated and seen as icons (偶像).
Perhaps the reason for Miquela’s popularity lies behind the fame of a similar star, Hatsune Miku. This 16-year-old animated(动画的) singer from Japan has held singing concerts not only in her home country but also in the US and China.
Even though Hatsune’s no more than a 3-D figure projected (投射) onto the stage, her fans are more than willing to pay to actually see her “in person”, because to them, she’s better than human singers. “She’s rather more like a goddess: She has human parts, but she transcends human limitations. She’s the great post-human pop star,” wrote reporter James Verini on Wired magazine.
Critics may say that 3-D stars could never replace humans, but when it comes to being authentic, are humans really the best example of how to do it?
Most of us edit our photos before posting them online, and we tend to create a fantasy that we’re living a perfect life by letting people only see the brighter side of it.
“Miquela is no less real to me than any other internet stranger with whom I’ve interacted,” wrote reporter Leora Yashari on the website Nylon. “Her existence in itself represents a new breed (种类) of influencer – someone who is breaking the boundaries of what is real and what is fake.”
