21、Farming is destroying the planet, but there could be a much more environmentally friendly way to feed ourselves: using renewable energy to turn carbon dioxide into food. “This is becoming a reality,” says Pasi Vainikka at Solar Foods, a company that is building the first commercial-scale factory that will be able to make food directly from CO2.
There can be no doubt that immediate attention to find greener ways to grow food is required. Conventional agriculture, including organic farming, causes damage to the environment in many ways. It requires a lot of land, leading to habitat loss and deforestation. It is also the source of a third of all greenhouse gas emissions and releases other pollutants. It isn’t very efficient, either. Crops typically transform less than 1 percent of light energy into usable biomass (生物量).
Instead, Solar Foods plans to avoid photosynthesis (光合作用) altogether, and grow bacteria that use hydrogen as their source of energy. At the factory, renewable electricity will be used to split water to produce hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen will be added to large containers, where the bacteria grow, along with CO2 and ammonia (氨气). The end result will be a yellow powder called Solein.
Solein is made of bacterial cells and is up to 70 percent protein. It can be used as an ingredient in all kinds of foods. “We are aiming at replacing animal-sourced proteins, which we think have the highest environmental impact,” says Vainikka.
Compared with plant crops, Solein will use 100 times less water per kilogram of protein produced, 20 times less land and emit a fifth as much CO2, according to Solar Foods. There are other benefits, too: factories could be situated anywhere in the world and production won’t be affected by weather conditions.
“With Solar Foods and other companies scaling up their systems, this is truly beginning a new era of agriculture,” says Dorian Leger at Connectomix Bio in Germany. “I think these trends are exciting and will help bend the carbon curve as well as lead to improved global food supply security.”

A.The use of Solein may help reduce carbon emissions.
B.Solein will dominate the agricultural development.
C.Solein can help achieve global food safety.
D.The prospect of Solein remains to be seen.
22、A new study published in "Annals of Behavioral Medicine" shows that three continuous nights of sleep loss cause great damage to your mental and physical well-being.
Soomi Lee, assistant professor in the School of Aging Studies at the University of South Florida, found the biggest jump in symptoms appeared after just one night of sleep loss. The number of mental and physical problems steadily got worse, peaking on day three. At that point, research shows the human body got relatively used to repeated sleep loss. But that all changed on day six, when participants reported that the severity of physical symptoms was at its worst.
"Many of us think that we can pay our sleep debt on weekends and be more productive on weekdays," Lee said. "However, results froth this study show that having just one night of sleep loss can significantly impair your daily functioning."
Data provided by the Midlife in the United States study included nearly 2, 000 middle-aged adults who were relatively healthy and well-educated. Among them, 42% had at least one night of sleep loss, sleeping 1%fewer hours than their typical routines. They recorded their mental and physical behaviors in a diary for eight consecutive days, allowing researchers to review how sleep loss causes wear and tear on the body.
Participants reported a pile-up of angry, nervous, lonely, irritable and frustrated feelings as a result of sleep loss. They also experienced more physical symptoms, such as upper respiratory(呼吸道)issues, aches, gastrointestinal(肠胃的)problems and other health concerns. These negative feelings and symptoms were continuously elevated throughout consecutive(连续的)sleep loss days and didn't return to baseline levels unless they had a night sleep of more than six hours.
About one-third of U.S. adults sleep less than six hours per night. Lee says once that becomes a habit, it's increasingly difficult for your body to fully recover from lack of sleep, continuing the vicious(恶性的)cycle of worsening daily well-being, which could impact one professionally. A previous study led by Lee found losing just 16 minutes of sleep could impact job performance. Her previous findings also show that minor sleep loss can decrease daily mindfulness, which is a critical recourse for managing stress and maintaining healthy routines.
Lee says the best way to maintain a strong daily performance is to set aside more than six hours to sleep every night.
【1】Which of the following statements is true about the sleep loss according to paragraph 2?
A.The most severity of physical symptoms happens on day six.
B.The biggest symptom of our body appears on the first day.
C.The problems of mental and physical steadily exist during the days.
D.One night of sleep loss can also affect your body functioning.

A.Minor sleep loss can reduce daily mindfulness.
B.An over 6-hour night sleep can ease the negative feelings.
C.Losing just 16 minutes of sleep have no impact on job performance.
D.Sleep loss can lead to vicious cycle of worsening daily well-being.

23、Rainforests are a very important part of our planet, giving us oxygen, absorbing carbon dioxide and giving a home to 50% of the animal and plant species of the planet. Not to mention the medicines and cures that are made from the plants that grow there. 【1】 .
What is deforestation? Deforestation is the name given to the damage toe rainforests. This is being done by burning them down, cutting down the trees or flooding the areas. 【2】 It’s reported that an area, the size of one football pitch (足球场), is being destroyed every minute! If this carries on at this speed, it will take less than a hundred years to destroy all the rainforests on Earth.
【3】 People clear the rainforests to make space for producing food, including cattle to be farmed for cheap beef and also growing large crops, such as soya beans. In addition, other causes of deforestation, which are also related to making money, include cutting down and using the wood from the forest, building roads for mining metals, gold or diamonds and something like that.
How can they be saved? 【4】 Also, you could think about the reasons why the forests are being destroyed and how you could help. For example, the cheap beef farmed in the areas that used to be rainforest land is often used in fast food chains. 【5】 You could also check on your supermarket food labels-is it farmed in an area where deforestation is taking place? Besides, you could use rainforest-friendly wood which is not a product of deforestation.
A.This is happening so fast.
B.Why are they being destroyed?
C.What can they provide for humans?
D.You could avoid eating that to save some rainforests.
E.However something unpleasant like deforestation is happening to them every day.
F.You could help by raising money for a charity that protects rainforests.
G.As we destroy forests, we lose their ability to change carbon dioxide into oxygen.
24、Volunteers Wanted
Description:
Children from low-income families or new arrivals have difficulties in learning English based on their growing backgrounds and financial problems. For most of them, tutoring (家教) that build self-confidence in speaking English is beyond their dreams. During the COVID-19 outbreak, a number of children’ have fallen behind with their studies.
We are calling for volunteers with high English proficiency (流利) to provide virtual tutoring lessons at Kwun Tong centre on Saturdays for children in Primary 4—6. These one-hour visual lessons will support them with practicing English conversations through storytelling and/or self decided topics. This activity will help primary school students to improve their English proficiency and confidence by communicating more in English.
Requirements:
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and they are required to be fluent in speaking both Chinese (Mandarin is more preferable) and English.
Volunteer roles:
● Volunteers will be working in a pair.
● Each volunteer pair will be working with the same group’ of children for 4 consecutive (连续) weeks.
● Practice English speaking with the children online.
All volunteers who attend this activity must be registered (登记) with HandsOn Hong Kong. If you wish to have a friend or family member join you in this activity, they must first register with HandsOn and sign up for the activity.
