  • 21、   Technology affects the way individuals communicate, learn, and think. It helps society and determines how people interact with each other on a daily basis. It has positive and negative effects on the world and it impacts daily lives. We are living in a time when technological advancements are common. However, with technological advancements, there's a downside (弊端)to it all.

One aspect of technology that has bad a great impact on society is how it affects learning. It's made learning more interactive, which helps people better understand the material that they are learning and have trouble with. Also, it gets people better access to resources. With the creation of the Internet, it gives us access to information at a twenty-four-hour rate and you have access to almost anything online. In addition, it allows students to get work done easier. It also expands the boundaries of the classroom, encouraging self-paced learning. People can access learning through websites and social media. This helps students learn better than sitting down for lectures and reading from textbooks. These technological advancements have made learning more fun and convenient.

Besides, the technological advancements have also helped keep people safe and healthy. There are many apps on phones for people to monitor their weight, the calories they intake, heart rate and other health properties (属性) any time of the day. There's increased accessibility of treatment available, there's the change in healthcare that adds benefits for the elderly, and hospitals using advanced technology within their surgical rooms.

However, studies show that mobile communication affects people in a negative way when it comes to being sociable and making face-to-face contact. Mobile technology can decrease communication and relations between people. There's less personal time, because you're always in contact with someone. Also, it can be distracting from your schoolwork. There is also loss of privacy, because anyone can find you anywhere, at any time of the day.

  • 22、   Long before they found their way into living rooms around the world, computers were the belongings of institutes and corporate headquarters. After all, the huge and heavy mainframes of the 1960s might easily fill a room of their own.

The invention of the microprocessor-Intel’s 4004 was the first to be made commercially available in 1971-changed all that. Manufacturers were finally able to produce machines small enough to fit into customers’ homes. Yet, the question was: Could firms persuade people to actually want one there?

The story of how computers enter our homes is not one of technology, but one of marketing and design, according to writer and journalist Alex Wiltshire, whose new book, Home Computers: 100 Icons that Defined a Digital Generation, tells the industry’s early history through its most influential models. “The technology was already in existence,” he said in a phone interview. “But what was important was the idea of putting it into a form that could be bought and easily used.”

The very first models in Wilshire’s book were aimed at hobbyists and industry insiders. These so-called “kit” computers performed only basic functions. But the arrival of user-friendly machines like the CPET 2001 and Apple Ⅱ in 1977 were signs of a turning point.

“There was a massive change around the idea of ‘What if these computers were packaged, presented and designed in a form that anyone could use?’-that they wouldn’t require people to learn computer languages, or to devote several rooms of their houses,” Wiltshire said. “What if there were these objects that people could buy off the shelf and just plug into their TVs? That was the moment that the idea of a ‘home computer’ was born, and it was absolutely down to design.”

1What can we learn from Alex’s book?

A.Technology for home computers was not mature.

B.Marketing and design counted most for computers.

C.The home computer industry has a long history.

D.The writer’s idea was put in the design of home computers.

2What is the difference between kit computers and CPET 2001?

A.Kit computers could handle complex operation.

B.Kit computers were more environmently friendly.

C.CPET 2001 was easier to use for common people.

    D.CPET 2001 was better than Apple I.

3What is the topping idea when designing a “home computer”?

    A.Designing it like a TV.

    B.Designing it aimed at housewives.

C.Designing it easier to use and keep.

    D.Designing it used learning languages.

4What’s Alex’s attitude towards the change of home computer?

    A.Objective. B.Negative. C.Indifferent. D.Suspicious.

  • 23、Helen Keller once wrote, “The unselfish effort to bring cheer to others will be the beginning of a happier life for ourselves.” 【1】 The UN has set December 5 as International Volunteers Day to give recognition to these people.

Nineteen-year-old Andrew Makhoul was a communications major at the University of Pennsylvania. It was coming up to spring break, but unlike his classmates, Makhoul wasn’t planning on spending the break relaxing. 【2】

He traveled to Guatemala. He went to an orphanage in one of the most violent and poor parts of Guatemala City. It depends upon volunteers to stay open. Although he didn’t speak much Spanish, he found communication wasn’t a problem: 【3】 And what he gave out, he got back: “You could see love when you looked in their eyes.”

Makhoul’s first time as a volunteer only lasted a week, but by the end of that week, he knew he’d be back in the future.

【4】 The UN highlighted the case of Palestinian women who are survivors of breast cancer. As part of the UN’s Aid and Hope Programme for Patient Care, the women have been volunteering their time to create low-cost breast prosthetics (假体) to be distributed to women for free, among whom Shahd El-Swerki is a brilliant example. 【5】 By the end of her time there, she admired these women who are “not only survivors but also volunteers”.

About 2,400 years ago, Greek philosopher Aristotle said, “The essence of life is to serve others and do good.” Volunteers all around the world are making these words come true, each and every day.

    A.“You communicated with love.”

B.She volunteered in curing thousands of women.

C.She worked with the women as part of the programme.

D.Unexpectedly, volunteers benefit from their experiences.

E.Sometimes, volunteers themselves live with huge challenges.

F.He decided to spend his time doing something useful for people.

G.These words certainly prove true for the millions of volunteers all over the world.

  • 24、In one of the world’s most forbidding environments, Polar bears spend their summers roaming (漫步) the Arctic on large pieces of floating ice. They drift(漂移) for hundreds of miles, finding mates, hunting for seals, and fatting themselves up for the winter. Without the floating ice, the world’s largest bears could not survive. Yet at this moment, the polar bears’ Arctic habitat (栖息地) is melting away under it because of global warming.

Over the past three decades, more than a million square miles of floating ice has disappeared. Scientists predict that, if the current rate of global warming continues, most, if not all, of the bears’ floating ice will be gone by 2100. As a result, the world’s polar bears could face global dying out by the end of this century.

Already, the ice on the southern edge of the polar bears’ habitat is melting about three weeks earlier than in the past. The loss of those key weeks leaves the bears less time to hunt, eat and store up fat. Once the ice melts, the bears must fast for up to eight months on land until the floating ice returns. As a result of early melting, there has been a 14 percent decline in the Hudson Bay polar bear population over the past ten years—a fall clearly caused by global warming.

Besides, a growing number of polar bears may be drowning (溺水) as they are forced to swim more often, and for longer distances, looking for ice sheets(冰原). According to a report by the US Minerals Management Service, researchers observed four dead polar bears floating 60 miles off Alaska in September of 2006 and said it was likely that many other bears swimming far off shore also drowned. Scientists have concluded that the worldwide population of about 20,000 polar bears is likely to become smaller by more than 30 percent in the next 35 to 50 years alone.

1】【1What do polar bears usually do in summer?

    A. Look for relatives.

    B. Hunt for food.

    C. Store crops up.

    D. Make friends with seals.

2】【2What disaster will happen to polar bears by the end of this century according to the text?

    A. Global drowning.

    B. Global dying out.

    C. Global hunger.

    D. Global roaming.

3】【3What can be inferred from the underlined part in Paragraph 3?

    A. The bears will have to stay hungry longer.

    B. The bears will have to roam faster.

    C. The bears will have to stay quieter on land.

    D. The bears will have to face a faster fall of its population.

4】【4Why do polar bears have to swim more often and farther?

    A. To search for food.

    B. To build up bodies to survive.

    C. To find places to land on.

    D. To escape being hunted.
