21、Limericks (五行打油) are usually witty or humorous, and have five lines: the first two rhyme, the two in the middle rhyme, and the last line rhymes with the first two lines. Here is how to write a limerick.
Pick what you would like your limerick to be about. It could he about mice, a tree, a person, or whatever.
_______ Don’t end it with something you can’t rhyme — like “orange”. Start it like “There once was a man who ate limes (酸橙)” or something like that.
Your next line has to rhyme with the first line. If you use “There once was a man who ate limes”, your second line could be like “He ate them all the time” or “And sampled various wines”. Your limerick would now he like There once was a man who ate limes/And sampled various wines.
The third and fourth lines have to be related to the first part of your limerick, but are not with the same rhyme. They could he like, He wouldn’t touch a tomato/It tasted too much like potatoes or something along those lines.
The fifth line must rhyme with the first two lines. Your last line could he like, “And potatoes, you know, do not shine” or something like that.
Your entire limerick would be kind of like this: There once was a man who ate limes/And sampled various wines/He wouldn’t touch a tomato/It tasted too much like potatoes/And potatoes, you know, do not shine.
If you don’t like your limerick, you can always go back and change it. It’s not permanent.

22、 Survival and rescue stories from the deadly crash of TransAsia Airways Flight 235 in Taiwan are inspiring as well as exciting. They raise the question: Why do some passengers survive plane crashes while others sadly don't?
Some of the survival games involve factors passengers largely can't control, like the weather, flight crew skills, the design of airline seats and the construction, maintenance (维修) and the age of the plane.
But passengers themselves can do a lot to improve their chances of survival simply by making smart choices and being informed.
Here are a few ideas to keep in mind:
* Seat choice. Experts differ. Have you heard of the “five-row rule”? This refers to the idea that if you're sitting within five rows of an emergency exit, you have a statistically (统计地) better chance of surviving a crash.
* Listen to the safety talk. Yeah, it's boring. But it could save your life! The presentation-by video or by flight attendants-explaining what to do in case the plane goes down, offers key information like: How do I get out?
* Read the safety card. Do you know that safety card in the pocket of the seat in front of you? Think of it as a map leading you toward survival. Read it. It shows how the plane you're on will be evacuated (撤离) .
* Be aware of the exits. Plan your escape. Visualize how you-and perhaps children you're traveling with-are going to get out of the plane.
* Move quickly. You have 90 seconds to get out of the plane after a crash. Many passengers in plane crashes survive the initial impact. It's what happens next that often kills them. This includes fire, smoke and sometimes water. Sherwood advises using 90 seconds as a time frame for escaping.
【1】At the beginning of the passage, the crash of TransAsia Airways is mentioned ________.
A.to share a story
B.to introduce the topic

A.You should read the boring safety card on the desk in front of you.
B.You'd better sit within seven rows of an emergency exit.
C.You should design your escape way in advance.
D.You should wait a moment after a crash.
【4】The author's purpose in writing this passage most probably is ________.
A.to offer us some tips on how to survive an air-crash
B.to offer us some tips on how to enjoy an air journey
C.to inform us of major services on the plane
D.to inform us of the danger of taking planes
23、James Armour, aged 25, has become the first person to run, swim and cycle the length of the Outer Hebrides. The Outer Hebrides are a chain of distant islands on the northwest coast of Scotland. Armour swam 20 miles, ran 52 miles and cycled 112 miles. It took him 52 hours and 52 minutes to complete the challenge. He named the route “the Selkie” referring to mythological seals that are said to turn into humans when they reach land.
The Selkie started at the Barra Head Lighthouse on the island of Barra, the most southerly point on the route, Amouron the route. Amour worked his way over land and sea to the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse, the furthest point north in the Outer Hebrides.
Armour said in a social media post that the reality on the ground was not what he’d been expecting. He said that a quarter of the running was over rock and low wild plants.
The swims were made harder by the tide turning pushing him away from his destination. Armour also suffered from terrible seasickness which meant that he was unable to eat even when he was on land.
Armour, from Edinburgh, has raised more than £14,000 so far for the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust, a charity that protects whales and dolphins around the Hebrides. These sea creatures face many threats, including warming seas. Through the race, Armour said he hoped to raise money, share the beauty of these islands and encourage all of us to connect with nature.
【1】What do we know about “the Selkie”?
A.It’s Armour’s way of referring to his race route
B.It’s an island where Armour challenged himself.
C.It’s a kind of ancient sea animal in Edinburgh.
D.It’s a book of imaginary stories.
【2】What was unexpected to Amour?
A.The suffering from loneliness.
B.The terrible ground condition.
C.The long distance of cycling.
D.The lack of food.
【3】What can be inferred about Armour?
A.He cares for nature.
B.He is sociable and creative.
C.He ran after money and fame.
D.He enjoys his race very much.
24、In the near 2050, dining at your favorite restaurant is likely to be an altogether different experience.
For your starter, you’ll tuck into a delicious Caesar salad containing protein-rich mealworms instead of chicken. Next, your android waiter 2.0 will bring over the mouth-watering main course; a meaty burger that has been grown in a Petri dish (有盖培养皿), decorated with crisp lettuce freshly picked from an underground farm and juicy tomato that has been genetically modified to contain extra vitamins. Then, if you still have room for dessert, you’ll be able to choose from a range of sweet treats that have been designed on a computer and printed directly onto the plate.
These unconventional dishes may seem stomach-churning to us now, but in the future they could help to solve a global food crisis. Over the next 35 years, the world’s population is expected to exceed nine billion, meaning an extra two billion hungry mouths to feed. To fulfill this demand, the amount of food we grow will need to increase by 70 percent, but with most of the planet’s farmland already being used, and billions of its inhabitants already undernourished, this is going to be a major challenge.
Today’s global food industry is already unsustainable, with agriculture responsible for almost a third of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. From the nitrous oxide given off by crop fertilizers, to the carbon dioxide generated as the produce is transported around the world, these gases area trapping heat in the atmosphere and gradually warming the surface. In turn, the changing climate makes it difficult to grow more crops, and so scientists will need to step in more and more to help. By genetically modifying the plants we grow, not only can the more vulnerable species be made able to withstand harsher, inhospitable environment, but the hardier species that can survive could also be made more nutritious to ensure we all get vitamins and minerals we need.
Although growing fruit and vegetables generates a great deal of greenhouse gas, it is livestock production that is the biggest contributor to global emissions. As demand for meat grows, so does the list of negative consequences for our planet, so something needs to be done very soon. Of course, one simple solution to the problem is to eat less meat, but for a mostly carnivorous (食肉的) global population, this idea is unlikely to catch on. Therefore, tasty alternatives need to be found, and idea of what we consider to be meat may need to change too.
Instead of packets and tins, your local supermarket will sell ingredients in cartridges that you can load into your 3D printer at home. Then, with a press of a button, you can sit back and relax while the machine builds a delicious dish —layer by layer — that is sure to impress your dinner party guests.

A.to provide nutrition for people around the world
B.to decrease the farmlands being used in the planet
C.to balance food supply and demand
D.to feed the extra two billion hungry mouths
【3】Which of the following is correct regarding the relationship between food and climate?
A.crops cultivation→gas emission→climate changes→more crops
B.genetical modification→better adaptability→more nutrition
C.livestock→minor influence→less consequence→remain unchanged
D.less meat lovers→more tasty choices→more food changes
【4】What might be discussed in the paragraphs following the last one?
A.Hi-tech farms.
B.Lab-grown meat.
C.Genetically modified food.
D.3D-printd meals.
25、 Li-Fi, an alternative to Wi-Fi that transmits data using the spectrum of visible light, has achieved a new breakthrough, with UK scientists reporting transmission speeds of 10Gbit/s—more than 250 times faster than‘superfast’broadband. The fastest speed ________ reported was 3Gbit/s, achieved earlier this year in Germany. Chinese researchers also claimed this month to have produced a 150Mbp/s connection, but some experts were doubtful without seeing further ________.
The term Li-Fi was ________ by Edinburg University’s Prof Harald Haas thought the technology is also known as visible light communications(VLC). Many experts claim that Li-Fi represents the future of mobile internet ________ its reduced costs and greater efficiency compared to traditional Wi-Fi. Both Wi-Fi and Li-Fi transmit data over the electromagnetic spectrum, but ________ Wi-Fi utilizes radio waves, Li-Fi uses visible light. This is a ________ advantage in that the visible light is far more plentiful than the radio spectrum(10,000 times more in fact)and can achieve far greater data ________. Li-Fi signals work by switching bulbs on and off ________ quickly---too quickly to be noticed by the human eye. This most recent breakthrough builds upon this by using tiny micro-LED bulbs to ________ several lines of data in parallel. The research was carried out by the Ultra Parallel Visible Light Communications project, and funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
Existing LED light bulbs could be ________ to transmit Li-Fi signals with a single microchip, and the technology would also be of use in situations where radio frequencies cannot be used for fear of ________ with electronic circuit. And although Li-Fi bulbs would have to be kept on to transmit data, the bulbs could be ________ to the point that they were not visible to humans and yet still functional. One draw-back is that the data receiver would have to be in sight of the transmitter-bulb as visible light does not ________ solid materials.
The makers of Li-Fi note that this quality might actually be an advantage in some ________, making Li-Fi more ________ than Wi-Fi with hackers unable to access unsecured internet connections from out of sight of the transmitter.

It was going to be my first day at Rainbow Middle Schoo1. Everyone else was coming back from winter holiday, but I was going to be new in this schoo1.
After getting out of my mother’s car, I looked around and noticed that kids were gathering around in the hallways with their friends, whispering and giggling. Not knowing anyone and having nowhere to go, I decided to just wait outside until the bell rang.
I was standing outside Mrs. Everett’s classroom, reading a novel named Oliver Twist, when I glanced back to find someone looking over my shoulder. “Are you new here? Anyway, I absolutely love the novel! It’s one of my favorite novels. By the way, I’m Macy!” the girl said.
I was about to answer when the bell cut me off. Shyly, I entered the classroom to find Mrs. Everett smiling and she led me to a seat. Once everyone came in and sat down, Mrs. Everett called me up to the front and introduced me to the class. As I scanned their faces, I noticed that they looked bored and didn’t seem to care about me. I returned to my seat and listened to the teacher for the rest of the class.
The lunch bell rang and I got out of the classroom, checking my backpack for my lunch. Scanning the lunch tables, I was nervously wondering where I should sit when I saw Macy approaching me. “Hey. If you want, you can come and sit with us,” Macy offered as she pointed to a pink table near the classrooms. Feeling happy, I glanced over where she was pointing and followed her over. Suddenly, my shoelace untied at that moment. Then I knocked into Macy and dropped my lunchbox. I said sorry and picked up my lunchbox. With my head low, I was afraid the other girls at the table would laugh at me.
