21、Did you ever have to say “no” to somebody? Such as a classmate who asks to go to lunch with you? New research suggests that, at least socially, a rejection (拒绝) should not include an apology. In other words, saying you are sorry does not make the person being rejected feel any better. In fact, it might make the rejected person feel worse. That is surprising. Many people consider it to be good manners to say they are sorry when they turn down a request.
Gili Freedman is doing some related research at Dartmouth College. For her research, she asked over 1,000 people to respond to different examples of social rejection. In one example, the researchers asked people for their reaction after a person named Taylor asked to join a co-worker who went out to lunch every Friday. And Taylor was told “no”. But in some cases, the person rejecting Taylor offered an apology. In other cases, the people doing the rejection did not say they were sorry. People were asked how they would feel if they were being turned down, just as Taylor was. Most said they would be more hurt by a rejection with an apology than a rejection without an apology.
Freedman said the reason is that apologies make people feel like they need to say that the rejection was okay — even when they felt like it was not okay. Rejection without an apology lets them express their feelings of disappointment, hurt or anger more easily. Freedman also said that an apology often makes the person doing the rejection feel better — even as it makes the person being rejected feel worse.
Her research deals only with social communication. A business situation might be very different. “If a manager rejects a job interviewee or a boss must tell an employee that he or she is being fired from a job,” Freedman said, “reactions to apologies may be different.”

23、Since 1991, a ceremony presenting an award called Ig Nobel Prize would be held in September before the authentic Nobel Prize ceremony every year. It honors unusual scientific research. The standard is “make people laugh and then think”.
It’s not hard to understand the first half of the standard when seeing the award-winning research.
Medicine Prize
One study firstly looked at the pain of hearing chewing sounds seriously but not as complaints from picky people. This symptom was diagnosed as misophonia (恐音症). This study also paid attention to people who can’t stand the sounds of keyboard typing and heavy breathing.
Ornitholog Prize
One study was considerate enough to care about whether woodpeckers (啄木鸟) would have headache after they bang their heads against trees.
Apart from the research, the prize ceremony also has many aspects worth laughing.
Event
The tradition of throwing paper airplanes to the stage.
Staff
Sweepers—responsible for cleaning the paper airplanes.
Human spotlights—responsible for lighting up speakers with a flashlight and their shining bodies.
Miss Sweetie Poo, an eight-year-old girl—responsible for stopping long speeches by saying “Please stop. I’m bored”.
But there are important research processes and findings behind the unusual topics. Apart from diagnosing misophonia, the research team also studied the treatment of it. The study on the woodpeckers’ heads was helpful to the prevention of head injury. One study found that playing an Australian instrument called didgeridoo could treat snoring (打鼾).
So Ig Nobel Prize is not an ignoble version of the Nobel Prize. The prize is very meaningful as it shows people science can be funny and down-to-earth.

24、The insect-eaten money floated in pieces to the floor. For the global music star Angelique Kidjo, that scene of her grandmother having to use a closet as a bank is driving her desire to see African women overcome the many blocks to obtain credit and respect.
The Benin-born singer, one of Africans iconic (偶像的) artists and a collaborator (合作者) with Philip Glass and others, is the voice of a new project aimed in part at rewriting laws across the continent that prevent millions of women from becoming a more powerful economic force.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Kidjo described what she had seen over decades of travel in Africa during which women in lively marketplaces wished they had the means to do more.
“Why do banks give more loans to men versus women? That’s the question I have,” she said, “Millions of businesswomen in Africa lack loans versus men. And men pay less back than women.”
Every time credit is refused to African women, who consume some 90% of what they earn in educating their children, raising families and building communities as opposed to about 40% for men. “It’s a disaster,” Kidjo said, “We’re taking up reducing the poverty rate in Africa to the smallest number ever.”
She recalled women in Ghana who often dug a hole in the ground to save their earnings because they didn’t have bank accounts. And during a visit to Benin last month, one woman told her that to obtain a loan of 5,000 CFA ($8) she had to show a property deed and hand over 100,000 CFA as collateral (抵押). Such experiences have set her thinking.
Kidjo has won a major human rights award for she has shown unusual courage in standing up to unfairness.

A.The low living standard of their families.
B.The poverty rate of some African countries.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When Dylan was just seven years old, he moved to the United States with his mother, Khadine, and his twin younger brothers. The family hoped that their new home would allow them to start over and find success. However, their dream didn’t work out exactly as they imagined it would.
Life as a single mother supporting three kids is incredibly difficult, but Khadine had a particularly difficult time after her twin sons had been diagnosed with serious heart conditions. As a result, the boys suffered from dangerous symptoms and required 24-hour care. As Khadine had to work three jobs to support her family financially, it became Dylan’s responsibility to look after his young brothers. To relieve Mom’s stress, Dylan also found a part-time job at a recreation center.
While Dylan never considered his family to be a burden to him, seeing his mother and brothers become vulnerable (脆弱的) made him determined to plan his future out correctly. He believed education was the only way out of their struggle, so he made a promise to his mother that he would be the first one in the family to go to college.
For that promise, Dylan made use of each and every minute to study while taking care of his brothers. He soon became an honor student at Henry High School and took several advanced classes to keep his grades up. The College of New Jersey was his top choice. He was determined to put that admission letter in his mother’s hands.
However, weeks before Dylan’s college entrance exam, both his family and his determination were tested again when Khadine fell ill and was unable to work for a while. Soon, the bills became unmanageable and the landlord evicted (驱逐) Dylan’s family after Khadine couldn’t pay the rent. The family had no choice but to live in the shelter. The place wasn’t an ideal place to study. It was often noisy and crowded, and the lights would go out at a certain time after 11 p.m.

1. 续写词数应为150 左右;
