二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Although small business training and credit programs have become more common throughout the world, little attention has been paid to the need of young people, and even less to the children living on the street or in difficult condition.

Over the past nine years, Street Kids International (S.K.I.) has been working with partner organizations in Africa, Latin America and India to support the economic lives of street children and develop opportunities for street children to earn income.

The S.K.I. Bicycle Courier Service first started in the Sudan. Street children who took part in it were given bicycles, which they used to deliver parcels and messages. A similar program was taken up in Bangalore, India. The Shoe Shine Collective was a program with the Y.W.C.A. in the Dominican Republic. The children in this project were lent money to buy shoe shine boxes. They were also given a safe place to store their equipment, and facilities for individual savings plans. The Youth Skills Enterprise Initiative in Zambia is a program with the Red Cross Society and the Y.W.C.A. Street youths are supported to start their own small business through business training, life skills training and access to credit.

During the program, The S.K.I. and partner organizations have drawn lessons from the past: First of all, being a businessman is not for everyone, nor for every street child. And it is important for all loans to be linked to training programs that include the development of basic business and life skills. Secondly, small loans are provided firstly for buying fixed assets such as bicycles, shoe shine kits and basic building materials for a market stall. As the children gain experience, they can be given more loan amounts. And all S.K.L. programs have charged interest on the loans. Generally the rates have been lower than bank rates. Most importantly, it is believed that credit must be given with other types of support that help the young develop key life skills as well as productive businesses.

1How does S.K.I. help the street children?

A.By giving the street children chances to go to school.

B.By encouraging the public to give money to street children.

C.By creating chances for street children to make money.

D.By drawing the attention of governments to help street children.

2Street youths can be lent money to buy shoe shine boxes in _______.

    A.The Dominican Republic B.Zambia

    C.India D.Sudan

3The underlined word “assets” in the last paragraph probably can be replaced by _______.

    A.clothing B.vehicle C.equipment D.belongings

4From the last paragraph we know _______.

A.each child can only enjoy one kind of loan

B.not all loans should be linked to training programs

C.any child can apply for the business training and loan

D.the children have to pay back slightly more money than they borrow

  • 22、The word tolerance is widely used in liberal democracies. It indicates a positive meaning. Politicians urge us to be tolerant towards minorities. Educators teach us to be tolerant towards the other. The press is full of references to the need to display tolerance when faced with individuals or groups espousing a different view or holding a different religious belief. A tolerant society is an objective sought after by anyone who believes in the values of democracy. A tolerant individual is attributed with virtuous qualities.

The question we must ask is whether we have been using the word tolerance fully aware of its meaning and whether we have applied it correctly to reflect what we really wish to convey?

The word tolerance means to bear, or to bear with. If I tolerate something or someone, I basically say that I am ready to bear it or him. I can tolerate a bad smell or a noisy neighbour. The act of toleration forces me to desist from conveying my objection to the existence of a phenomenon, which I find difficult to bear. A bad smell or a noisy neighbour is considered by me to be an objectionable phenomenon. By tolerating either of them, I am not transforming the bad smell or the noisy neighbour into positive phenomena. Let's be honest: I don't have a different taste when it comes to bad smells. I simply dislike it and wish that it disappears. I don't respect the noisy neighbour. I would rather have him stop at once the noise he is making so I can live in peace.

To try to remove the bad smell or take reasonable action in order for the noisy neighbour to stop bothering me would most probably not be considered an intolerant act by most people.

Now, let's try to apply the word tolerance in reference to a person who is law-abiding and holds a legally acceptable different view from my own. I may have a strong view, which is opposed to his. Quite frankly, I may decide to tolerate his view. By so doing, I would be attributing to it a negative characteristic. I would apply the same attitude to his view as to the bad smell or noisy neighbour. Thus, to try to take action in order to make his view disappear would be considered an intolerant act. To tolerate his view the way I would a bad smell or a noisy neighbour, could hardly be considered virtuous.

The subject tolerating is by nature not equal to the object being tolerated. If I tolerate you, I essentially say that I am above you and am prepared, although unwillingly, to bear with your presence or with your practices or opinions. That may be true in the case of an individual who is ready to tolerate the other. However, this attitude by such an individual, though empirically true, is hardly a virtue. Certainly, the fact that an individual, in reality, may merely tolerate the other or his opinion does not justify a government or any official authority promoting tolerance as a virtue. One cannot tolerate an equal being. True equality involves respect, not toleration. To respect the other as a distinctive person is hardly to tolerate him. This is the true meaning of equality: diversity existing in a mutually-respectful socio-legal setting.

The danger with tolerance is that it can lead to the acceptance of individuals or groups bent on destroying the foundations of democratic systems. We have seen such cases with regard to political parties or destructive religious groups that have been treated in a liberal manner under the guise of tolerance.

A tolerant attitude involves the grant of a favour, not a right. The question we should ask ourselves is whether we would ever wish a parliament to make laws according to us, as individuals and as part of a collective entity or a permission to pursue certain actions interpreted as a favour rather than a right? Indeed, would we ever wish anyone to listen to our views and accept us the way we are simply because he is kind enough to tolerate us?

【1】 The first two paragraphs are mainly intended to show that __________.

    A. tolerance is a symbol of liberal democracies

    B. democratic society always advocates tolerance

    C. people’s understanding of tolerance is one-sided

    D. tolerance can be applied to many situations

【2】 The example of a bad smell and a noisy neighbour is raised to indicate that _________.

    A. the writer are fed up with them

    B. most people find them hard to tolerate

    C. the writer isn’t prejudiced against them

    D. tolerating them isn’t a virtuous act

【3】Which of the following will the writer probably agree with?

    A. Too much tolerance will endanger the foundations of democratic systems.

    B. By tolerating people can transform something negative into the opposite.

    C. People tolerating others are likely to consider them as their equals.

    D. Being tolerant should be regarded as a right instead of a favour

【4】The best title for this passage should be “___________”.

    A. Tolerance and respect   B. What is to be tolerated?

    C. Is Tolerance a Virtue? D. Should people be tolerant?

  • 23、   I fell in love with the Little Free Library concept years ago on vacation. The concept of free literature-sharing boxes posted in neighborhoods and public spaces hooked me. For a booklover, this represented bliss(快乐). At home, my bedside table sprouts(长出)books and from the floor rises a mountainous to-be-read pile. My husband wasn’t the least bit surprised when I suggested starting our own Little Free Library- As a writer and introvert(内向的人), I welcomed the idea of saying hello to other booklovers on occasion.

The following winter, my husband built a copy of our Irish garden shed(棚屋)with a framed glass door on the front and, in the spring, mounted(安装)it on a post in front of our house. We filled the shelves with books, and since then, visitors have refilled them with literary fiction, romances, mysteries, science fiction, cowboy westerns, young-adult fiction, poetry, how-to’s, self-help and a range of other nonfiction.

For a time after COVID-19 first struck, public libraries shut down, and Amazon prioritized the delivery of essential and high-demand items. Books were less easily attained. Traffic to our library increased. I posted reminders about handwashing, and still, readers kept coming.

We wondered if we should close the Little Free Library and revisited(再次讨论)our original motivations for hosting it: to facilitate the exchange of books, to create a sense of community. Reading provides the necessary relief to the emotional crush(压力)of life. With this in mind, we added a written reminder on staying safe in the library.

Through my teens, reading transported me to other places and eras. Books taught me about life and how people overcame adversity(逆境). I no longer felt alone in the things I struggled against.

Aside from the entertainment books offer, studies show that reading exposes us to other cultures and perspectives. Literature sheds light on the justice to be found in social inclusion and community cohesion(凝聚). Self-esteem and understanding grow in equal measure as we come to understand ourselves and our place in the world.

During this pandemic, the Little Free Library has reinforced the importance of literature and reading to our emotional and mental health. It’s become an alternate means of creating a community of people with mutual regard for humanity and the written word. We are together even when apart.

【1】What attracted the author to host the Little Free Library?

    A.The emotional crush of life.

    B.The free literature-sharing concept.

C.The sense of self-esteem and social justice.

D.The importance of exchanging books with each other.

【2】What is the husband’s attitude toward building the Little Free Library?

    A.Objective.

    B.Supportive.

    C.Indifferent.

    D.Doubtful.

【3】What happened to the author’s Little Free Library during the pandemic?

A.It was not allowed to be used.

B.The number of books dropped sharply.

C.It was getting more popular than before.

D.Readers questioned the motivations for hosting it

【4】What can we learn from Paragraph 5?

A.How reading shaped the author’s growth.

B.How we facilitated the exchange of books.

C.How the Little Free Library further developed.

D.How literature played a role in community building.

【5】What is the benefit of the Little Free Library during the pandemic?

A.It has offered solutions to the pandemic.

B.It has relieved the pressure of public libraries.

C.It has exposed readers to foreign perspectives.

D.It has helped create a united and cohesive community.

  • 24、Starch (淀粉) is the main component of flour, rice and corn among others, while carbon dioxide makes up the vast majority of greenhouse gases. One day, humans may be able to “eat” carbon dioxide, and global warming could be “eaten away” by carbon lovers. Although it sounds wild, the day is coming.

Chinese scientists have created starch using carbon dioxide, hydrogen and electricity, according to a study published in Science in September, 2021.

“Plants create starch through photosynthesis (光合作用), which is a complex and inefficient (效率低得) process,” Ma Yanhe, the director of the Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told China Daily. He added that it would take a plant about 60 steps to turn carbon dioxide, water and sunlight into starch.

“Our breakthrough shows that making starch is achievable in a lab. This method makes it possible to produce food in factories and there are many industries that can benefit from this technology,” Ma told China Daily.

The team has been working on the process for 6 years. “The first step of the method is to convert carbon dioxide and hydrogen into methanol (甲醇), which is a molecule (分子) that contains a single carbon atom,” Cai Tao, one of the first authors of the study, told China Daily.

Scientists then piece these single-carbon molecules into bigger and more complex molecules. With the help of super computing, Chinese scientists have simplified the natural starch-making process from about 60 steps into 11.

“The new process has made it possible to turn starch production from traditional agricultural farming to industrial production. And it may be possible to satisfy our needs without farming in the future. This will not only help save water, fertilizer and land but also help recycle carbon dioxide to deal with climate change,” a research fellow with the Chinese Academy of Sciences told the Global Times.

The study can also benefit space exploration in the future. The starch may provide a secure food source for astronauts as they travel long distances in space by simply turning the carbon dioxide they breathe out into food.

【1】What does Ma Yanhe think of the new method of creating starch?

    A.It’s extremely complex and inefficient.

B.It’s more efficient than the natural method.

C.It’s a way of dealing with global warming.

    D.It’s achievable through photosynthesis.

【2】The underlined word “convert” in Paragraph 5 probably means ______.

    A.translate

    B.mix

    C.divide

    D.transform

【3】What can be learned about the breakthrough?

A.It can change the way of starch production.

B.It will be beneficial to people’s health.

C.It can provide astronauts with delicious food.

D.It helps farmers rid traditional agricultural farming.

【4】What can be the best title of this passage?

    A.Hungry for starch

    B.Smart with starch

    C.Secure about starch

    D.Beneficial to many industries
