二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Technology offers conveniences such as opening the garage door from your car or changing the television station without touching the TV.

Now one American company is offering its employees a new convenience: a microchip implanted (植入) in their hands. Employees who have these chips can do all kinds of things just by waving their hands. Three Square Market is offering to implant microchips in all of their employees for free. Each chip costs $300 and Three Square Market will pay for the chip. Employees can volunteer to have the chips implanted in their hands. About 50 out of 80 employees have chosen to do so. The president of the company, his wife and their children are also getting chips implanted in their hands.

The chip is about the size of a grain of rice. Implanting the chip only takes about a second and is said to hurt only very briefly. The chips go under the skin between the thumb and forefinger. With a chip in the hand, a person can enter the office building, buy food, sign into computers and more, simply by waving that hand near a scanner. The chips will be also used to identify employees. Employees who want convenience, but do not want to have a microchip implanted under their skin, can wear a wristband (腕带) or a ring with a chip instead. They can perform the same tasks with a wave of their hands as if they had an implanted chip.

Three Square Market is the first company in the United States to offer to implant chips in its employees. Epicenter, a company in Sweden, has been implanting chips in its employees for a while.

Three Square Market says the chip cannot track the employees. The company says scanners can read the chips only when they are within a few inches of them. “The chips protect against identity theft, similar, to credit cards.” The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the chips back in 2004, so they should be safe for humans, according to the company.

In the future, people with the chips may be able to do more with them, even outside the office. Todd Westby is Chief Executive Officer of Three Square Market. He says, “Eventually, this technology will become standardized allowing you to use this as your passport, public transit, all purchasing opportunities, etc.”

【1】What is the third paragraph mainly about?

    A.The substitutes of the chips.

    B.The advantages of the chips.

C.The places to implant the chips.

A.the chips are very popular among the employees

    B.the chips have magic powers

C.the price of the chips is reasonable

  • 22、Bicycle Safety

Operation  Always ride your bike in a safe, controlled manner on campus (校园). Obey rules and regulations. Watch out for walkers and other bicyclists, and always use your lights in dark conditions.

Theft Prevention  Always securely lock your bicycle to a bicycle rack -- even if you are only away for a minute. Register your bike with the University Department of Public Safety. It's fast, easy, and free. Registration permanently records your serial number, which is useful in the possible recovery of the bike stolen.

    Equipment

    * Brakes  Make sure that they are in good working order and adjusted properly.

    * Helmet  A necessity, make sure your helmet meets current safety standards and fits

    properly.

    * Lights  Always have a front headlight -- visible at least 500 feet in front of the bike.

A taillight is a good idea.

  • 23、After decades of development and many trials and frustrations along the way, the James Webb Telescope has finally started to deliver what it came for. On July 12, NASA released the first science observations made by the suite of instruments carried on board the mission, marking what we eagerly anticipate will be the beginning of a new era in astronomy.

After the nail-biting launch on Christmas Day, a series of critical deployments followed to open up the telescope and its sunshade. If any of these operations had failed, James Webb would have been an unusable disaster. But the programme was perfectly executed, as the amazing observatory it has been planned to be.

It was very exciting to see the new images selected by an international committee of representatives from NASA. Scientists were not prepared for the level of crispness and fine detail that can be seen. It’s a joy to finally have such high-quality data.

Unveiled by US president Joe Biden, the stunning images of SMACS 0723, a cluster of thousands of galaxies, were released on July 11. The massive foreground galaxy groups magnify and twist the light of objects behind them, helping us to have a closer look at very faint objects in time.

The image shows the galaxy cluster as it appeared 4.6 billion years ago. Images such as this will help us understand how the first stars and galaxies formed. Some of these may be among the most distant objects known, from the beginning of the universe.

The size of a telescope-its aperture (孔径) -is the key thing that decides the ultimate quality of the images and the detail that can be observed. Bigger is better. With its six-metre aperture, Jame Webb is the largest telescope ever launched into space and from its vantage point a million mile from Earth, free from the Earth’s atmosphere, it is expected to deliver the best, most detailed views of the universe we have ever seen. There is no doubt that it will revolutionize our understanding of the universe, just as its predecessor, the Hubble Space Telescope, once did.

【1】What marked the beginning of a new era in astronomy?

A.The successful launch of the James Webb Telescope.

B.The perfect operation of the James Webb Telescope.

C.The first scientific exploration mission carried out by the James Webb Telescope.

D.The new images about the galaxy cluster unveiled by US president Joe Biden.

    【2】What made scientists surprised?

A.How the first stars and galaxies formed 4.6 billion years ago.

B.The clear and detailed images observed by the James Webb Telescope.

C.The programme of the James Webb Telescope was perfectly performed.

D.The James Webb Telescope went through decades of development and tests.

【3】What does the underlined word “faint” mean in paragraph 4?

    A.Unclear.

    B.Tiny.

    C.Weak.

    D.Blank.

【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.The James Webb Telescope is larger than the Hubble Space Telescope.

B.The Hubble Space Telescope covers a distance of six metres.

C.Our understanding of the universe has been completely changed by the James Webb Telescope.

D.A million miles from Earth is the best location for astronomy observation.

  • 24、Pinocchio may be just a children’s story, but Spanish scientists at the University of Granada recently investigated the so-called “Pinocchio effect” and found that our noses don’t grow longer when we tell a lie, but actually get a little bit smaller.

Dr. Gómez Milán and his team developed a lie detector test that used thermal (热成像的) cameras to tell if people were lying, and found that whenever participants in their research were being untruthful, the temperature of their nose dropped up to 1.2℃, while the temperature of their forehead increased up to 1.5℃. They also found that drop in temperature at nose level actually caused it to become slightly smaller, although the difference could not be seen by the human eye. “One has to think in order to lie, which raises the temperature of the forehead,” Dr. Gómez Milán explained the findings. “At the same time we feel anxious, which lowers the temperature of the nose.”

For this study, researchers asked a number of 60 students to perform various tasks while being scanned by thermal cameras. One of these tasks involved making a 3-to-4-minute call to their parents, partners or friends and telling an important lie. Participants had to make up the lie themselves during the call, and the thermal cameras picked up this “opposite Pinocchio effect” caused by the changes in temperature in the nose and forehead.

Interestingly, the thermal lie detector picked up the temperature difference in 80 percent of test participants, which is a better rate of success than that of any modern lie detector used by the police. “With this method we have increased accuracy and reduce the chances of ‘false positives’, something that is frequent with other methods,” said Dr. Gómez Milán, who added that police could one day combine other lie detection technology with their technology to achieve better results.

【1】Why did the temperature of the participants’ foreheads go up during the test?

    A.They felt ashamed.

    B.They had to think hard.

    C.They were scared.

    D.They got embarrassed.

【2】What phenomenon does the “opposite Pinocchio effect” refer to?

    A.The nose becomes smaller.

    B.The nose gets longer.

    C.The temperature gets higher.

    D.The temperature remains the same.

【3】What can we learn about the research?

A.The thermal lie detector may assist the police.

B.The thermal lie detector has proven a popular one.

C.Researchers conducted the study by interviewing.

D.Researchers designed different lies for participants.

【4】Which might be the best title for the text?

A.Will Lie Detectors Tell the Truth?

    B.Will Thermal Technology Be Reliable?

C.Will Lying Make Your Nose Longer?

D.Will Lying Make Your Temperature Rise?

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Mommy, don’t go,” my threeyearold son screamed as I walked to the door. My fifteenyearold leaned against the kitchen counter with his arms folded across his chest, not screaming, but glaring at me as I pulled his little brother off my legs.

“Are you mad at me too?”

“You spend all your time taking care of other people’s kids, but what about us?” Dylan left angrily.

I was shocked and a little hurt. How could my own child not understand that the work I was doing was saving lives? Then the answer hit me.   He didn’t know, because he had never seen what Healing the Children actually did. Dylan had heard the stories of sick children, but had never once looked into the eyes of a child and understood the hard truth—that without our help, the children would likely die.

“Get dressed. You are going with me,” I said.

I spent the drive explaining the case of Hector to my son, who pretended to ignore me the entire time. “He’s seven, only weighs thirty pounds and is very sick. He has a heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot, which could kill him. It is a miracle (奇迹) that he is still alive.”

I went on to explain that it took a team of volunteer medical staff to get Hector to the hospital from his remote village and care for him while he was there. Still, Dylan seemed unimpressed.

We stopped at a convenience store for water and snacks. Dylan had one large and one small Slurpee (思乐冰饮料). He said the small one was for Hector. I doubted whether the little guy would be able to drink it, but remained silent. This was the first interest Dylan had shown in being there. I wasn’t about to ruin it.

I stopped at the nurses’ station to check on Hector’s progress while Dylan went to his room. Our patient was recovering physically, but the nurse was concerned that Hector was struggling emotionally. She said, “Kids usually bounce back fast, but he hardly speaks and never smiles.”

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式作答。

Imagine my surprise when I heard laughter from Hector’s room
