It has always been a big dream of me and my coach Sato to win the gold at the 2022 Winter Olympics,” Su said. “We have been thinking about it every day for the past four years. The only difference between a professional and an amateur is that I must invest more time and efforts in doing what I love. Love is what has been supporting me all the time.”

A pedestrian is killed in a traffic accident in the USA every 110 minutes;one is injured every nine minutes, according to official date. Crosswalk can be especially dangerous for the elderly. Among people 70 and older, 36% of pedestrian deaths in 2006 occurred in crosswalks, compared with 21% of those younger than 70, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The Federal Highway Administration(FHWA)advises that next year states increase by nearly 15% the amount of time traffic lights provide for pedestrians to cross the street after the flashing orange hand appears .

FHWA spokesman Doug Hecox says reasons for the change include an aging population that needs more time to cross, health-conscious Americans walking more, children encouraged to walk to prevent getting overweight and high gas prices pushing people to walk instead of drive.

Pedestrian deaths went down by 12% from 5,449 in 1996 to 4,784 in 2006. But among those in 2006, 471 were killed in crosswalks, down slightly from 488 ten years earlier, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says.

Probably you have seen photographs of the Grand Canyon, the great valley in the desert country of Arizona. But you must go there yourself to feel its true size and beauty. The Grand Canyon is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world.

The Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon over millions of years.Slowly, the river cut down through hard rocks. At the same time, the land was rising.Today, the canyon is one and a half kilometers deep and 446 kilometers long. The oldest rocks at the bottom of the canyon are more than one billion years old.The width varies from about 200 meters to 29 kilometers across. The rim or top of the canyon is about 2,300 meters above sea level on the South Rim,and about 3,000 meters on the other side, the North Rim.As a result, there are different kinds of plants and animals on opposite sides of the canyon. The South Rim is a dry desert country. The North Rim has tall forests.

  • 24、We have a family tradition where each year, on New Year’s Eve, we sit down and go through old albums. This year, when we were doing this annual routine, I noticed my grandmother looked shorter now than in pictures from when she was younger.

Our height decreases with age. The height that most of us boosts during our teens and twenties suddenly decides to leave us behind as we get increasingly older. So we see our parents and grandparents “shrinking”.

This loss in height is observed in both males and females and across continents. Aging is universal; so too is our gradual reduction in height. People typically begin losing their height around the age of 30 years. Every ten years after this age, humans lose almost one centimeter, which roughly translates to about one half of an inch. This decrease in height also accelerates with age. Men and women lose height differently. Women lose more inches compared to males of the same age. Also, interestingly enough, the rate of height loss depends on their initial height, with the taller ones losing more height.

The length of leg bones and the spine determine the height of a person. These normally attain their maximum length by the end of adolescence, after which one’s height does not increase. During our “adult phase”, the length of the leg bones remains pretty much the same, but the spinal bones tend to play a key role in the reduction of height. Besides, the ligaments of the foot start degenerating with age. This arches our foot down. Thus, our height may reduce slightly. In addition, the body loses its lean mass muscle with age due to, in part, loss of muscle tissues. This condition is age-related loss of muscle. The muscle fibers shrink and are replaced at a slower rate. This muscle loss makes us look shorter.

Nothing can really push the stop button, but it can lose some speed through appropriate diet, regular exercise, and general avoidance of alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine.

【1】Why does the author mention his family tradition?

A.To indicate the value of family.

    B.To analyze a complicated issue.

C.To introduce the topic of the text.

    D.To share his interesting experiences.

【2】Who probably loses height the most?

    A.A tall 70-year-old man.

    B.A short 50-year-old woman.

    C.A tall eighty-year-old woman.

    D.A mid-height eighty-year-old man.

【3】What changes will mainly determine the height decrease?

    A.Spinal bones.

    B.Muscle tissues.

    C.Leg bones.

    D.Foot ligaments.

【4】What can be known about the height reduction?

    A.It can be stopped.

    B.It can affect health.

    C.It can change lifestyle.

    D.It can be slowed down.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was the final day of our holiday: I’d gone snowboarding with my little brother and what we lacked in skill we made up for in enthusiasm, catching the first ski lift in the morning and the last lift in the afternoon. That day, fresh snow had been falling and we were in high spirits. We stopped near the top of an off-piste section (非滑雪场区域) that went through forests. I’d done this route a few times before and, as I was faster and more experienced, I let my brother disappear into the trees ahead, figuring I would soon catch up.

I began to pick up speed when I was suddenly thrown off balance. I didn’t fall but I lost control of the board. I was unable to turn, instead going in a straight line, gathering speed. Just as I was regaining control, I smashed (猛撞) into the trunk of a large tree.

It was like hitting a concrete pillar (柱子). I didn’t lose consciousness but the pain was felt instantly and overwhelming. I knew pretty much immediately that my back was broken and quickly realised the situation could get very serious. I was off-piste, so nobody would be coming past. There was no phone signal. My brother knew I was on the mountain, but we often lost each other and would just meet at the bottom, so he might not worry for some time. Even if he did, he had no way of knowing where I was. It was snowing and cold. I figured if I waited, I would probably be rescued, eventually. But the chance of freezing to death before that happened was too high for me to risk staying put.

I tried to stand but collapsed and almost blacked out with pain before I got halfway up.

Walking was not an option. Crawling was too slow and painful. I had another idea: I managed to get the board unclipped (松开) from my feet and manoeuvred (移动) it under my stomach so I was lying on it. I faced down the mountain and, using the board as a luge (小雪橇), I started to drag and slide my body down the steep, tree-lined slope (斜坡). It was sharp but the snow was quite deep so I could use my arms to stop myself sliding out of control. I descended (下降) at a slow jogging pace, trying to slow myself as much as possible.

    注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

    2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

    Paragraph 1:

At one point I lost control and came off the board.
