二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Do you often feel that you aren’t taking in as much of the joy around you as you could? I recently caught myself feeling this way, and based on a suggestion by John Horton, coauthor (合著者) of The Inner Game of Stress, I put myself on a 30-day life-appreciation course.

The only assignment each day was to go outside and appreciate life.

So I started by taking in the beauty around me. During the first few days, I was able to appreciate my surroundings, although it was an intellectual appreciation, not an emotional one.

After the first week, it was more uncomfortable to lie in bed and think about things than it was to get up and see them for myself.

If you often wake up feeling anxious or depressed, or if you don’t look forward to each day, then you need to try this course for yourself.

It’s an inner workout that you can do anywhere. It may not change your life, but it will adjust your attitude, and that’s pretty helpful in this crazy world.

I have always believed in ending the day on a positive note by writing a word or two in a gratitude journal and saying something sweet to my wife about the day we shared.

Now, I have a new morning habit. It hasn’t changed my routine one bit, but it has changed the way I look at the world.

Creating a new habit isn’t about perfection – it’s about getting what you want by creating a change in your behavior and thinking.

So now, while I’m making my coffee in the morning, I’m also appreciating what I have.

It’s quick, fulfilling, and a much better way to start my day than looking at my phone or computer.

And because of this, my attitude is better, as I’ve already begun my morning on a positive note rather than a problematic one.

The idea here is that if you can appreciate your life, it actually changes the way you feel about it.

Appreciation will give you more energy to live the way you would like to live.

As a means of improving our mood, it’s highly underrated (被低估的). The easy task of appreciating what we have simply makes life better.

1How did the author feel about seeing things for himself after he started the life-appreciation course?

    A. Comfortable. B. Doubtful . C. Anxious. D. Depressed.

2What does the author think of his new morning habit?

    A. It has changed his daily routine.

    B. It has increased his desire for perfection.

    C. It has improved his physical health.

    D. It has changed his way of viewing the world.

3Which of the following might the author disagree to?

    A. Enjoying the beautiful surroundings of your neighborhood.

    B. Appreciating a cup of coffee in the morning.

    C. Amusing yourself with your phone to start your day.

    D. Seeing things from a different angle.

4What’s the author’s main purpose in writing this article?

    A. To recommend a life-appreciation course to readers.

    B. To explain why appreciation is often underrated.

    C. To encourage readers to be grateful for life.

    D. To advise all the readers to change their lifestyle.

  • 22、Some unique bookstores continue booming (繁荣) across the globe. For travelers, they pack in plenty of beauty, strange character, and local history within their walls.

Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, and their literary contemporaries famously hung out at this bookstore overlooking the Seine. Shakespeare & Co. attracts countless tourists and foreigners. Children’s literature fill the shelves.

    Libreria Acqua Alta, Venice, Italy

This bookstore features classic volumes of American and Italian books packed in traditional Venetian boats. But the show-stopping attraction is the back of the bookstore, which opens up to a beautiful canal. The bookstore is also famous for its wide-ranging art and postcard collections.

    Barter Books, Alnwick, England

Housed in an old railway station, Barter Books has a pleasant living room atmosphere, thanks to carpets, crackling fireplaces in the winter, toys for kids, a model railway acting as a link between the book columns of the central room, and comfortable seats among a vast selection of second-hand books on a variety of subjects.

  • 23、   In the space of just two years, the app Tik Tok, created by Beijing-based company Bytedance, has gathered more than half a billion users—around 40% of them are outside China—who share short videos of themselves lip-syncing (对嘴), cooking, dancing or just being silly. What sets Bytedance apart is its success in the social media category, which is controlled by Facebook, Twitter and Snap— all Western companies.

Bytedance calls itself an artificial intelligence company. It uses machine learning and algorithms(算法) to figure out what people like and give them more of what they want to see. On Tik Tok, people can edit and beautify 15-second videos before posting them online. The app has even spawned(引发) a phase to describe a kind of behaviour of people glued to their customized feeds: “shua Tik Tok” or “scrolling through Tik Tok”. Last year, the company released Tik Tok, the overseas version of Tik Tok. Bytedanee’s growing video empire has made it the world’s fifth biggest app maker. Bytedance says Tik-Tok has more than 500 million monthly active users.

Investors like Bytedance because its hundreds of millions of users attract a lot of advertising money. The video apps are lucrative because they attract a lot of users in their teens and 20s, who are more generous with the money. Bytedance also makes money through income sharing deals. People on Tik Tok, for example, can buy digital coins to give to other people on the app—like throwing money into a performer’s tip jar, Bytedance takes a cut of those earnings.

Bytedance’s founder and CEO is Zhang Yiming, a former Microsoft employee. People who have worked with Zhang describe him as someone who thinks deeply about technology and spends much of his free time writing code.

Like Facebook and Twitter, Bytedance is also battling fake news and inappropriate content. Bytedance promises to add more employees to review content.

1How many overseas users does Tik Tok have?

    A.Under 20 million. B.Over half a billion.

    C.Around 400 million. D.About 200 million.

2Why is Tik Tok so popular ?

A.It is a new generation of hi-tech product.

B.It meets the demand of most people.

C.It is easy and cheap to operate online.

D.It has both a home and an overseas version.

3Which of the following best explains “lucrative” underlined in Paragraph 3 ?

    A.Professional. B.Expensive.

    C.Profitable. D.Challenging.

4What is the social media apps’ common trouble?

A.When to introduce their new version.

B.What to do with fierce competition .

C.Where to find much new investment.

D.How to keep their content positive.

  • 24、A battery made of paper stands out among the 200 best inventions of the year in TIME Magazine. “It sounds impossible: Just add water to a piece of paper and get energy,” said TIME Magazine, who chose the Swiss-made battery as one of the winners in this year’s “Experimental” inventions.

The battery was created by researchers at the Swiss Federal Laboratory for Materials Testing and Research. “Over the last decades, we have witnessed an increasing use of electronic devices, leading in turn to electronic waste (e-waste) becoming the world’s fastest growing waste stream.” wrote the researchers in their published paper. They developed the paper battery aiming to reduce the environmental impact of single-use electronics by turning to more environmentally friendly materials.

The battery was described to be made from paper with salt inside and based on printed inks: two kinds of inks containing different minerals acted as the positive end and the negative end. Analysis of the performance of a one-cell paper battery showed that after two drops of water were added, the battery started working within 20 seconds and reached a stable voltage (电压) of 1.2V. After one hour, the one-cell battery’s performance dropped significantly as the paper dried out. But after the researchers added two extra drops of water, its performance increased with a stable voltage of 0.5V for another hour.

Within two to five years, the technology could be used in low-power electronics such as medical devices and smart packaging. “I see a new role for paper... that could also be an answer to the growing concern over e-waste,” said EMPA’s Gustav Nyström, the inventor. He told TIME Magazine they wanted to improve the efficiency of the battery in the future and get it working for longer.

Each year TIME Magazine lists a selection of best inventions that “change how we live”, based on their originality, creativity, efficiency, impact and other criteria.

【1】What did the researchers aim to do by developing a paper battery?

    A.Create more environmentally friendly materials.

B.Win the best experimental invention of this year.

C.Reduce the impact of electronics on the environment.

D.Make the development of electronic devices grow faster.

【2】How did the researchers increase the performance of the battery?

    A.By rewetting the paper.

    B.By dropping more ink.

    C.By shortening its working hours.

    D.By adding another paper battery.

【3】What aspect of the battery do the researchers plan to promote according to Gustav Nyström?

    A.Its creativity.

    B.Its packaging.

    C.Its technology.

    D.Its efficiency.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.Scientists invent a paper battery-just add water.

B.Paper battery is named among world’s best inventions.

C.TIME Magazine lists a selection of inventions each year.

D.A new role for paper may help reduce the electronic waste.

  • 25、   A star athlete stopped by my office and she was eaten up by self-criticism after committing a few errors during a weekend match. “I’m at peak _________ and I practise hard. How is this happening?” This student, like many I teach, believes she should be able to _________ the outcomes of her life by virtue of her hard work.

I study and write about resilience (复原力), and I’m noticing a(n)_________ increase in students like this athlete. When they win, they feel powerful and smart. When they fall short of what they imagine they should _________, however, they are crushed by self-blame.

We talk often about young adults struggling with failure because their parents have protected them from _________. But there is something else at play among the most advantaged in particular: a _________ promise that they can achieve anything if they are willing to work for it.

Psychologists have sourced this phenomenon to a misapplication of “mind-set” research, which has found that praising children for _________ will increase academic performance. Developed by Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, mind-set education has spread across classrooms worldwide. But a 2018 analysis found that while praising hard work over ability may benefit economically disadvantaged students, it does not _________ help everyone.

One possible explanation comes from Nina Kumar, who argued in a research paper last year that for teens in wealthy, pressure-cooker communities, “It is not a _________ of motivation and perseverance that is the big problem. __________, it is unhealthy perfectionism and difficulty with backing off when they should, when the fierce drive for achievements is over the top.” This can __________ physical and emotional stress. In a 2007 study, psychologists Gregory Miller determined that adolescent girls who refused to give up the __________ goals showed elevated levels of CRP, a protein that serves as a marker of systemic inflammation (炎症) linked to diabetes, heart disease and other medical conditions.

The cruel reality is that you can do everything in your power and still fail. This knowledge comes early to underrepresented minorities whose experience of discrimination (歧视) and inequality teaches them to __________ what is, for now, largely beyond their control to change. Yet for others, the belief that success is always within their grasp is a setup. Instead of allowing our kids to beat themselves up when things don’t go their waywe should all question a culture that has taught them that how they perform for others is more important than what __________ inspires them and that where they go to college matters more than the kind of person they are. We should be wise to remind our kids that life has a way of disappointing us when we least __________ it. It’s often the people who learn to say “stuff happens” who get up the fastest.
