二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Chinese cuisine is widely known and enjoyed all around the world. Who doesn’t long for a favorite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East- the ancient custom of tonic food.

Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s health or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame (芝麻) oil hotpot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach(菠菜), are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radishes (小萝卜) are seen as “cold”. One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or”cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.

The custom of employing tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as the wolfberry (枸杞子), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up.

So, whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup, or increase your mental powers with a serving of pig brain soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you were looking for.

1What is the present situation of tonic food?

    A.It is catching less attention.

B.It is enjoyed by many young people.

    C.It is well known worldwide.

    D.It is becoming increasingly popular.

2What is believed to benefit new mothers?

    A.Fruit tea.

    B.Chinese cabbage.

    C.Sesame oil hotpot.

    D.Pig brain soup.

3Which of the following best explains “catering” underlined in Paragraph 3?

    A.Medicine.

    B.Restaurant.

    C.Education.

    D.Fashion.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.The Charm of Chinese Cuisine.

    B.The Popularity of Tonic Food.

C.An Introduction to Chinese Tonic Food.

D.Differences Between Hot Food and Cold Food.

  • 22、   You don't have to be a fan of math to get excited about Pi ("π") Day. While the event, which is also Albert Einstein's birthday. may start with some calculations, it is more likely to conclude with a slice or two of delicious pie. The holiday is held every March 14, because "π" is widely recognized as 3.14.

The tradition of honoring "π" began at San Francisco's Exploratorium Museum. On March 14,1988, physicist Larry Shaw convinced his colleagues to mark the day by marching around one of the museum's circular spaces and consuming fruit pies. The celebration was made official in 2009 when the US House of Representatives set aside March 14 as Pi Day.

Today, Pi Day is observed in many creative ways.

Students at the California Institute of Technology in Los Angeles host a pie-eating event, which begins at 1:59 am and features 26 pies, each of five different flavors of the popular dessert. Though that might seem random, the date (3.14), time (1:59), number of pies (26), and number of varieties (5) recreate the first nine digits of Pi 3.14159265!

Students applying for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston eagerly wait for the day every year to find out if they have been accepted. However, instead of sending out the offers at 3:14 pm, the institution waits till 6:28 pm, as 6. 28 is referred to as Tau, which is Pi multiplied by 2. The number is believed to be much more reliable than Pi by some experts and even has its own celebration on June 28. Since 2017, MIT has also used Pi Day as a fundraiser to support its students, departments and programs.

The town of Princeton, New Jersey, where Einstein lived from 1935 until his death in 1955, celebrates the occasion with multi-day festivities that end on March 14. Visitors can participate in concerts, shows, as well as pie-eating, pi-recitation, and Einstein-lookalike contests.

1Where was Pi Day originally celebrated?

A.In San Francisco. B.In Los Angeles. C.In Cambridge. D.In Princeton.

2When was Pi Day made an official holiday?

    A.In1955. B.In1988. C.In2009. D.In2017.

3What does MIT do on Pi Day according to the passage?

A.Inform applicants of admission results. B.Conduct a calculating test.

C.Organize a march around the campus. D.Make desserts of different flavors.

4What's the author's purpose in writing the text?

    A.To instruct. B.To introduce. C.To persuade. D.To explain.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

    External rewards: yes or no?

Some argue that students' interests should emerge organically and genuinely from their own investigations of the world. The educational philosopher John Dewey warned teachers against artificially "making things interesting", and a long line of research has shown that providing "extrinsic", or external, rewards for an activity can weaken students' "intrinsic", or internal, motivation to engage in that activity.

But research also shows that, done carefully, the intentional elicitation (引出) of interest has many positive effects, and does not produce the negative results that educators may fear. Especially for academically unmotivated students, it's of primary importance that the adults in their lives create environments that allow them to find and develop their interests. And parents and educators can promote the development of kids' interests by demonstrating their own passion for particular subjects.

Two more thoughts on intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation: although research has convincingly established the value of intrinsic interest, in the real world most of us are driven by a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. High-achieving students learn for learning's sake, but also to get A's; successful business people are driven to create useful products or productive organizations, but also to enjoy financial rewards. There is nothing wrong with this mixing of motives.

Second, when intrinsic motivation is entirely absent, there's nothing to weaken with an external incentive. Parents and teachers are sometimes reluctant to offer a reward to a young person for doing something he or she "should" like for its own sake---a monetary bonus for reading a book, for example. But if the kid shows no interest in reading the book in the first place, there's no intrinsic motivation to weaken. And if the student does read the book in order to get the money---and discovers that reading is actually pretty fun---that's a win for everybody.

In short, while motivation is more complex than we sometimes assume, there is clearly a role for parents and educators to push young people's interests gently along.
