  • 21、Tips for Time Management

Often, the biggest challenge students face is juggling competing demands for time. It is especially important to be realistic about all these demands. 1

    Treat School Like a Job.

If students are registered full-time, school is their primary job. 2 This still leaves 16 hours on each of those days for sleep, sports, clubs, cultural, social, and other activities.

Spend Time on Each Course Every Week.

Students should prepare for and attend all their classes. 3 They should work on their courses regularly, at a time when their concentration is best and in a place where they won't be distracted.

    4

Successful students often develop a plan to increase the likelihood that their goals are realized. A goal in itself is not sufficient. Some tools available at the Student Development Center to help students plan include: * Term calendars; Weekly planners.

    Seek Out Support Services.

Students need to take responsibility for their learning but this does not mean doing everything on their own.5 They should also learn about the different student services and make good use of them.

    A.Plan Each Week and Term.

    B.Time Management Self-Assessment.

C.If you are struggling with time managing, read on.

D.Independent students should know how to find and ask for help.

E.They also need to spend some time each week learning new material.

F.Just like a full-time career, to be successful may require 8 hours each day.

G.Keep in mind that a 40-hour workweek could take the form of five, eight-hour clays.

  • 22、In our life of journey, we each have important roles to play. Some are conductors and some are singers. And the rest are heroes in the supporting cast(配角演员) and are necessary to complete the different tasks in life. The “stars” would be greatly darkened if the individual heroes don’t support their performances. The magical accents of the performance section might sound terrible and out of place, unless you could also hear the music they accompany. Even one member of an orchestra doing less than their best could stop the harmony of the musical piece.

So even though you may not receive the attention of the other performers, your contribution is valuable and a unique part of the success of the whole in the life you lead.

When you do your job well, you put your own unique energy into the task. Each of us has a different personality and a different talent, just suited for the different roles we support. We can look around us at any moment and identify with the people we work with. Doing your job well displays your ability and gratitude, while learning the lessons from others can move us towards our goals.

When you are fully present in the job you do, you bring the fullness of your mind, body, and spirit to the moment. Your contribution is strengthened by your talents and abilities, and they can attract the right people and circumstances to your experience. You are playing your role to your very best. You are giving your best to be the world and making it a better place for all of us to live in. Remember, each of us is expected to be the best.

【1】What does the first paragraph mainly discuss?

    A. The “stars’ also need many other people’s support.

    B. One person might perform different roles.

    C. You are a failure unless you become the “stars’.

    D. The “stars” are successful because of their own efforts.

【2】According to the author, doing the job well can help you _________.

    A. get a rise in your company

    B. show your ability and talents

    C. receive the attention of others

    D. get a sense of success

【3】What can we learn from the text?

    A. No pains, no gains.

    B. Practice makes perfect.

    C. All roads lead to Rome.

    D. Everyone is expected to do his best.

  • 23、   When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that my life has its problems too.

One big disadvantage is money. It costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma (哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of traveling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.

Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever you tastes in culture or entertainment. Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising --- and , what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.

Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is , when you are in your teens or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.

【1】What was the writer always thinking about when he was a child?

    A.Staying on the farm.

    B.Moving to the countryside.

    C.Leaving home for the city.

    D.Running away from the school.

【2】What can we learn from the text?

    A.He is very old now.

    B.He is in good health.

    C.He prefers driving a car.

D.He lives in the city now.

【3】In the passage, the writer tries to ________.

A.express his opinions about way of life

B.describe his life in the countryside

C.an interest in the outside world

D.persuade the reader to live in the city

【4】How is the passage mainly developed?

    A.By questioning.

    B.By comparing.

    C.By listing examples.

    D.By giving explanations.

  • 24、Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

Managing Time with the Pomodoro Technique

In work, as well as in life, doing what needs to be done in order to reach our goals can be difficult. 1 Luckily, one of the most efficient and most popular time management techniques is also one of the world’s simplest — the Pomodoro Technique.

The Pomodoro Technique was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. 2 Each block is known as a pomodoro, the Italian word for “tomato.” Cirillo named the system after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer that he used to track his work time when he was studying as a university student. He developed a habit of doing short blocks of work followed by resting periods. He realized this method could help him work with time instead of struggling against it.

In 2006, Cirillo published his Pomodoro Technique manual for people to download free of charge. The Pomodoro technique can be applied in almost all parts of our life. It was built around a handful of important steps. First, choose a task that you’d like to get done. 3 What matters is that you are ready to give it your full attention.

Next, set a timer for 25 minutes. Try to spend the full 25 minutes with your complete attention on the task. Then, when the timer goes off, take a five-minute break. Sit back, have a drink, go for a short walk, or do something else that is not work-related. Once you have completed four of these 30-minute cycles, treat yourself to a longer break that lasts 15 to 30 minutes. 4

After trying the Pomodoro Technique, you may want to experiment a little. Some people have found that 90-minute blocks work best, while others might perform better with more flexible periods. It varies from person to person. Just remember, like many things in life, simpler is often better!

A.In theory, the longer break will allow your brain to relax, reset, and get ready for the next round of Pomodoros.

B.Without a good system in place, it is easy to lose focus, waste time, and lose track of our most important tasks.

C.While you are working, block out all unnecessary distractions.

D.It uses a timer to break down your work into 25-minute blocks separated by short breaks.

E.If you’re managing a team, have everyone start the Pomodoro at the same time, and do breaks at the same time.

F.It can be something big, something small, or something that you’ve been putting off for months.

三、完形填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 25、Many early approaches to language technology — and particularly translation — get _________ in a conceptual dead end: the rules-based approach. In translation, this meant trying to write rules to analyze the text of a sentence in the language of _________, breaking it down into a sort of abstract “interlanguage” and rebuilding it according to the rules of the target language. These approaches showed early _________. But language is full of ambiguities and exceptions, so such systems were hugely complicated and easily _________ when tested on sentences beyond the simple set they had been designed for.

Nearly all language technologies began to get a lot better with the application of _________ methods, often called a “brute force” approach. This relies on software scanning vast amounts of data, looking for patterns and learning from precedent. _________, in parsing language (breaking it down into its grammatical components), the software learns from large bodies of text that have already been parsed by humans. It uses what it has learned to make its best _________ about a previously unseen text. In machine translation, the software scans millions of words that have already been translated by humans, again looking for patterns. In speech reorganization, the software learns from a body of recordings and the transcriptions made by humans.

Thanks to the growing power of processors, falling prices for data storage and, most crucially, the explosion in available data, this approach eventually _________. Mathematical techniques that had been known for decades came into their own, and big companies with _________ to enormous amounts of data were ready to benefit.

The final advance, which began only about five years ago, came with the arrival of deep learning through digital neural networks (DNNS). These are often claimed to have qualities similar to those of the __________: “neurons” are connected in software, and connections can become stronger or weaker in the process of learning. __________, Nils Lenke, head of research for a language technology company, explains matter-of-factly that “DNNs are just another kind of mathematical model,” the __________ of which had already been understood for decades. What changed was the hardware being used.

Almost by chance, DNN researchers discovered that the graphical processing units (GPUs) __________ to produce graphics in applications like video games were also brilliant at handling neural networks. The technique has already produced big leaps in quality for all kinds of deep learning, including decoding handwriting, recognizing faces and classifying images. Now they are helping to improve all manner of language technologies, often bringing enhancements of up to 30%. That has shifted language technologies from being __________ in a pinch to being really rather good. But so far no one has quite __________ what will move it forward from being merely good to reliably great.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was my winter break. I was engaged in a cycle race, my favorite hobby, with my friends. But that day I fell down and got scratches(划伤)on the face and leg. I wanted to hide it from my mother, because I was worried that my scratches would make her upset and she would scold(责备)me.

My mother had always taught me not to tell lies and not to hide anything from her even if I was wrong. But then I could not have enough courage to face her. So I wanted to go to sleep early, not because I was sleepy, but just to try to escape from my mother. I knew she was a sweet mom, but fear was pulling me back. I lay on my bed and tried to sleep.

My mother came to me and asked,“Dear, what happened? Why are you sleeping so early today? Eat something. I have made delicious pizza for you, which is your favourite. Come, get up.”

She was trying to pull me from my bed.I was worried and upset. I replied,“Mom, please don’t trouble me. I don’t like your pizzas. Your pizzas are really not very tasty. I want to sleep.“I saw a shadow of sadness on my mother’s face and turned my head from her.

I knew I was not being truthful to her. My teacher had taught me in school that we had to be truthful. My mother had always told me so many stories with good moral values. Thinking of all that, my eyes filled up with tears.

As I tried to sleep, my mother was again insisting that she would tell me a good story so that I could sleep peacefully. But still I did not want to turn my head to her.   I replied,“I don’t like your stories, Mom. Those are not interesting.”

She did not reply. She just touched my forehead. Slowly I fell asleep with a heavy heart, without giving a good night kiss to my mum.
