22、Ice on the Moon
There may be a lot more water and ice on the moon than we thought, according to a recent study.
Researchers from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) say ice is locked deep within the lunar surface, and may even be large enough to support future human settlements.
The theory may explain a long-observed differences between the moon and planets with similar surface conditions, like Mercury. While Mercury contains a large quantity of ice on its polar regions, the moon, which bears similar surface conditions, appears to have none-or at least none shallow enough to be observed.
“The simple answer is that the moon has lots of ice-it’s just buried below the surface,” said David Paige, a UCLA professor.
Radar examinations of Mercury show the planet contains thick store of ice, some of which were 50 meters wide, while similar observations of the lunar surface show only shallow store.
Scientists say the key to explaining that difference could be in studying the depth of the moon’s impact craters (陨石坑).
On the moon’s south pole, where ice has been previously detected, the impact craters were measured to be 10 percent shallower than those observed elsewhere. That difference in depth isn’t just coincidence (巧合). It’s due to a collection of hardened ice that rests beneath the surface.
Researchers say the lunar ice, unlike that found on Mercury, is likely layered with the moon’s regolith (风化层)-a lunar “soil” made of hardened rock and other material--and is much more dense as a result.
If true, research findings could be important for several reasons, such as the possibility of establishing colonies and industrial operations on the moon’s surface.

23、Nobody ever imagined that after being lost for more than half a century, the intangible cultural heritage known as Gaolou Mixian would be restored and passed on by a young man. “As a descendant of people from Gaolou village, I have a responsibility to restore our ancestors’ art forms,” Chen Guorui, the world’s only inheritor (继承人) of this ancient art, told the Global Times.
Gaolou Mixian uses rice paste to glue together selected grains of transparent rice to create realistic figures or structures. It is a unique folk art that developed during the Qing Dynasty and reached its peak during the first half of the 20th century. Each household in Gaolou village would make rice structures that they put on display in their ancestral halls during the Chinese New Year, which attracted people from all sides.
However, due to the wet weather in southern China, these rice-made artworks would only last three to four months before losing their shape. It is for this reason that these works are not seen in museums in China. Due to various historical reasons, most people in Gaolou village did not pass down the art form, which caused it to disappear nearly 70 years ago.
Chen found out about this after hearing one former resident express disappointment about its loss. Curious, he started to do research and tried out the methods he heard about from older people in the village. After several months of exploration, Chen finally completed his first successful work.
Over the past five years, Chen has gradually improved his skills and even begun using new techniques, such as creating some colorful artworks with colored grains of rice. Since 2017, people at home and abroad have taken an interest in this long-lost art form. To avoid being the last inheritor, Chen has been giving classes to some students at a primary school in Fuzhou with the support of local education authorities.

24、Since 2011, people around the world have been celebrating World Introvert Day on January 2. The word “introverted“ describes a personality type. 【1】 They are likely to feel exhausted by environments that are highly simulating and may often need to go to a quiet place to recharge.
World Introvert Day began with a blog post from German psychologist Felicitas Heyne. She suggested that introverts are often misunderstood and their mental health suffers because popular culture is dominated by extroverts. Her idea was to celebrate World Introvert Day to raise awareness of the social challenges that introverts face.【2】
There are many famous introverts in art and science, such as Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin, and J. K. Rowling. It is believed that many introverts have a great ability to focus and strong power of imagination.
【3】 Extroverts love connecting with other people, work well in groups, and are usually very confident. When introverts don’t fit into groups of extroverts, they may be seen as cold, uninterested, or shy. Popular culture tells us that it is important to network, socialize, and communicate, but all of this can make introverts feel uncomfortable.
Scientists are studying what causes someone to be an introvert or an extrovert. Recent studies show that genes are a factor, and most people seem to be born with one personality or the other. 【4】 The brain of an introvert can respond dramatically to a very mild stim- ulus, but the brain of an extrovert tends to need a stronger stimulus to have the same reaction. Our environment and experiences also influence whether we are introverted or extroverted. The term ambivert describes someone who is right in the middle. 【5】.
