22、Since the outbreak (爆发) of COVID-19, countless volunteers have risked their lives to help people in need. One of them is Mrs. Gao. I was lucky to have a chance to interview her.
In mid-January, Gao and her family went to Wuhan, where her parents-in-law live, to spend the Spring Festival holiday. Soon after their arrival, COVID-19 broke out. On January 23, Wuhan was locked down. Gao talked to me about what life was like in one of the “epicenters (震中)” of this pandemic (流行病). What impressed (使留下深刻印象) me most was her experience of working as a volunteer.
Hearing that Gao had decided to volunteer, her parents-in-law felt worried at first. COVID-19 was a terrible disease. What if she got infected? Gao fully understood them. However, the city and its citizens needed help. Finally, Gao succeeded in persuading (说服) her parents-in-law.
Gao’s task as a volunteer was to sort and give out food that was sent into her neighborhood. It wasn’t an easy job. Each shift (轮班) lasted for two to three hours. The volunteers were selfless. Gao said she decided to volunteer simply because she loved the city and that she believed she could help. When people said “Thanks!” to her, she couldn’t help but feel proud.
No man is an island. All of us are bonded (使连接) together with love. Even during the hardest times, we should not forget to help people around us.
【1】Why did Mrs. Gao go to Wuhan before the pandemic?
A.To work as a volunteer.
B.To spend the holiday.

D.生活
【3】Why did Mrs. Gao decide to volunteer?
A.Because the community called on people to do so.
B.Because her parents-in-law asked her to do so.
C.Because the people she knew were sick.
D.Because the city and the people needed help.
【4】What does the writer want to tell us by telling the story of Mrs. Gao?
A.We should volunteer when we have time.
B.We should help others when they are in trouble.
C.No one can live alone on the earth.
D.No one can live without the help of others.
23、Can plants eat people? Probably not, but many plants can eat meat. Some of them are big and they can eat small animals. One famous meat-eating plant is the Venus flytrap.
The Venus flytrap is very strange. It grows in dry parts of the United States. Its leaves are like the pages of a book, they can open and close very quickly. Inside the leaves, there are three small hairs. If a fly(苍蝇) touches one of the hairs, the leaves will close quickly. The fly cannot get out. In about half an hour, the leaves press(按压) the fly until it is dead. Then the plant covers the fly. Slowly the plant eats the fly.
Why do plants do it?
Most plants get what they need from the sun, the air and the ground. In some places, the ground is very poor. It doesn’t have all these important things, but animal meat has a lot of these important things. So some plants eat meat to get what they need. Let’s hope that some of the bigger plants don’t get the same idea!

A few years later, I was a freshman in high school and did not feel like looking for a new job. One day, I saw people handing out flyers(传单) at school. I wasn’t i【4】 at first because I thought I was fine making money by babysitting. But once I s【5】 thought about the money I could make, I applied to work as a lifeguard advertised on the flyer.
After a few months’ training, I could finally start the job. But the more money I made, the l【6】 I wanted to spend. As the work and pay i【7】, so did my responsibilities with money. Instead of wasting my money on useless things, I started saving up. I finally realized that money meant so much more to me because I was the one working for it.
