21、Complex systems are characterized by randomness and disorder and are difficult to understand. This year’s Nobel Prize recognizes new methods for describing them and predicting their long-term be haviour.
The Nobel Prize in Physics 2021 was awarded “for groundbreaking contributions to our under-standing of complex systems” with one half jointly to Syukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann “for the physical modelling of Earth’s climate, quantifying(量化) variability and reliably predicting global warming” and the other half to Giorgio Parisi “for the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations(波动) in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales”.
One complex system of vital importance to humankind is Earth’s climate. Syukuro Manabe dem-onstrated how increased levels of CO2 in the atmosphere lead to increased temperatures at the surface of the Earth. His work laid the foundation for the development of current climate models.
About ten years later, Klaus Hasselmann created a model that links together weather and cli-mate, thus answering the question of why climate models can be reliable despite weather being changeable and chaotic. He also developed methods for identifying specific signals, fingerprints, that both natural phenomena and human activities imprint in the climate. His methods have been used to prove that the increased temperature in the atmosphere is due to human emissions of CO2.
Around 1980, Giorgio Parisi discovered hidden patterns in disordered complex materials, whose discoveries are among the most important contributions to the theory of complex systems. They make it possible to understand and describe many different and apparently entirely random materials and phe-nomena, not only in physics but also in other very different areas, such as mathematics, biology, neuroscience and machine learning.
“The discoveries recognized this year demonstrate that our knowledge about the climate rests on a solid scientific foundation, based on a thorough analysis of observations. This year’s laureates have all contributed to us gaining deeper insight into the properties and evolution of complex physical sys-tems,” says Thors Hans Hansson, chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics.

23、A growing number of young people are having treatment for pain caused by taking pictures of themselves for social media. Jokingly named “ selfie (自拍) wrist ”, the condition is actually called CTS — carpal tunnel syndrome (腕管综合征).
【1】 If this is done repeatedly, the median nerve and blood vessels (血管) which travel through the carpal tunnel into the hand will become compressed (压缩), causing pain and numbness in the wrist and hand.
【2】 The most important thing is avoiding or reducing the activities that cause it. Meanwhile, wearing splints (夹板) and doing stretching exercises for the hand can work for mild symptoms, though it may take some time to improve the condition. 【3】 For example, a woman who regularly took selfies was found unable to hold things tightly due to severe numbness. As a result, the doctor had to operate on her to relieve pressure within the carpal tunnel.
In an interview, Dr. Raj Ragoowansi, a consultant plastic surgeon, said he had seen a 30% to 40% increase in people between the ages of 18 and 35 showing symptoms of CTS. He stressed that he could not prove that CTS symptoms were definitely caused by taking too many selfies.
【4】 Dr. Ragoowansi also asked younger patients about their full history of mobile phone use, and he found those who kept on using the thumb to type when using their phones easily got thumb-based pain, which led to “ phone thumb ” , or tendonitis (肌腱炎). 【5】
A.However, he believed it was the most reliable explanation.
B.Many were no longer taking selfies because of the condition.
C.He added that the carpal tunnel “ was an unforgiving space ” .
D.CTS can be treated with both non-surgical and surgical methods.
E.In severe cases, the injection of drugs and even surgery will be required.
F.“ Selfie wrist ” is caused by inward flexing (屈伸)of the wrist to take perfect pictures.
G.He concluded that not just taking selfies but texting too could be responsible for CTS.
24、There was once a famous doctor in a university hospital in Japan who was known for being very strict with his students. When this doctor scolded his students for “slow movement of hands” or “weak concentration,“ the students easily felt down. But one student was different. All the time, this student only repeated “yes,” and seemed not to care about what was being said. Instead, the student concentrated on strengthening his talent. Later, this student became the only one to inherit the know-how of surgery from the doctor. Watanabe Junishi, a Japanese doctor and writer, praised such “wise dullness” in his new book, The Power of Insensitivity.
The message of this book is that while being sensitive is preferred in general, in everyday life being insensitive is more useful. I argues that insensitivity, or the dullness of emotions or senses, is not a shortcoming but a talent. Those who do not find any inconvenience in a strange place to sleep, those who immediately forget anything bad that has happened, and those who are not affected when scolded or criticized by others are the types of people with the talent to be insensitive.
This is not the same as being lazy. The author advises readers to concentrate their abilities inward and to maximize them rather than using up abilities outward on other people or surroundings. insulting words have expanded blood vessels (血管) and thus better circulation. People with insensitivity become less sick after eating bad food. There are also theories that argue that those with sensitive sight or hearing age earlier than others. Cancer is more likely to be cured when the patient takes things easy.
In human relationships, such as marriage or companionship, seeking perfection only increases pressure and tends to break down relationships easily. The author’s advice to avoid responding to each and every piece of criticism and to stay firm at one’s own center has already provided me with strength.

A.A foreigner who finds it hard to adapt himself to a new environment.
B.An employee who often ignores criticism and is unwilling to work.
C.A traveler who is particular about everything about other countries.

A.To make a fortune and earn a reputation.
B.To show focusing on the inner world can be beneficial.
