21、 Most male birds try to attract mates with beautiful gestures. However, the white bellbird, local to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil makes the loudiest call ever recorded for that purpose. That is 40 Db higher than the safe hearing range for humans, which is 85 Db. Before this, the honor belonged to another Amazon-liver—the well-known screaming piha, which set a record of 116 Db.
Mario Cohn-Haft, one of the study's authors, first became familiar with the loud birds through his trips to the mountains of the Brazilian Amazon.” We could hear them all over the place; they're kind of the soundtrack of these forests,” says the researcher at Brazil's National Institute of Amazonian Research.“They give out these loud ringing sounds that sound like someone hitting metal, like a blacksmith.”
To find out how loud the white bellbird's sound actually was, Mario Cohn-Haft and Jeff Podos from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, walked to the mountains of the Amazon rainforests in northern Brazil in December 2018 and then again in February 2019. What they discovered was interesting
The pigeon-sized white bellbirds began their courtship(求偶) with a slightly gentler scream that averages about 116 Db. Upon attracting their possible mate's attention, they increase their effort with the deafening “song”. What was strange was that the male began by singing its first note with its back to the female and then turned suddenly. “You see this bird spinning around, and he's got his beak(鸟喙) wide open,” Podos said. “And he makes the second note right in the place the female would have been if she had not been smart enough to back off.”
The scientists are not sure why the female birds continue to stay so close even when the males are singing at full pitch(音高). "Maybe they are trying to judge the male birds up close, though at the risk of suffering damage to their hearing systems, "Podos thinks. Since the unpleasant sound, which increases the male birds' risk of being discovered, was not one of the survival skills, the researchers concluded that the female birds might have a preference for louder male birds.
The white bellbirds' ability to scream loudly may be the result of their diet, which only consists of fruits. Though the sizes of some fruits are like golf balls, the birds swallow them wholly. Cohn-Haft and Podos believe the bird’s ability to open their beaks wide helps increase their sound.
However, the scientists are puzzled about how the birds, both male and female, can endure the loud songs without going deaf.

22、 A 23-year-old British woman has invented a product she hopes will one day replace single-use plastic.
The new product is made by combining fishing waste and algae (水藻).It could be used to replace plastic bags or containers that people use once and throw away. Lucy Hughes created the material, called MarinaTex, for her final year project at the University.
MarinaTex is edible, to put it in another way, it can be tasted without danger. Hughes says it is also strong and stable. But unlike plastic, MarinaTex biodegrades (生物降解)in four to six weeks under normal conditions and does not pollute the soil. The inventor said she is concerned about the growing amounts of plastics in ocean waters. She noted one report that there would be more plastic than fish in the world's oceans by the year 2050. Examining fish parts left over from processing helped to give her the idea for a material that was useful and did no harm to the environment. “Why do we need to have hundreds of man-made polymers (聚合体)when nature has so many already available?" she asked. After months of testing, Hughes produced a strong, flexible sheet that forms at temperatures below 100 degrees Celsius. Inventor James Dyson said that MarinaTex is “stronger, safer and much more sustainable (可持续的)”than plastic. It is also easier to break down. Hughes will receive about $ 41,000 prize money as the first place winner of the James Dyson Award. She plans to use the money to further develop the product and ways to mass produce it. "Further research and development will ensure that MarinaTex evolves further, and becomes part of a global answer to the abundance of single use plastic waste," Dyson said.

23、Stan Lee was born in 1922. When he was just 17, he got a job at a company that made comic books. Although the salary was beyond his imagination, Mr. Lee got tired of it. 24、The U．S．Postal Service (USPS) is losing billions of dollars a year．The government company that delivers "small mail" is losing out to email and other types of electronic communication．First-class mail amount fell from a high point of 104 million pieces in 2000 to just 64 million pieces by 2014.
Congress permits the 600,000-empIoyee USPS to hold a monopoly (垄断) over first-class and standard mail．The company pays no federal, state or local taxes; pays no vehicle fees; and is free from many regulations on other businesses．Despite these advantages, the USPS has lost $52 billion since 2007, and will continue losing money without major reforms.
The problem is that Congress is preventing the USPS from reducing costs as its sales decline, and is blocking efforts to end Saturday service and close unneeded post office locations．USPS also has a costly union-dominated workforce that slows the introduction of new ideas or methods down．USPS workers earn significantly higher payment than comparable private-sector workers．The answer is to privatize the USPS and open postal markets to competition．With the rise of the Internet, the argument that mail is a natural monopoly that needs government protection is weaker than ever.
Other countries facing declining letter amounts have made reforms．Germany and the Netherlands privatized their national postal companies over a decade ago, and other European countries have followed suit．Britain floated shares of the Royal Mail on its stock exchange in 2013．Some countries, such us Sweden and New Zealand, have not privatized their national postal companies, but they have opened them up to competition.
These reforms have driven efficiency improvements in all of these countries．Additional number of workers have been reduced, productivity has risen and consumers have benefited．Also, note that cost-cutting measures—such as closing tone post offices—are good for both the economy and the environment.
Privatization and competition also encourage new changes．When the USPS monopoly over "extremely urgent" mail was stopped in 1979, we saw an explosion in efficient overnight private delivery by firms such as FedEx.
The government needs to wake up to changing technology, study postal reforms abroad and let businessmen reinvent our out-of-date postal system.
