21、Famous for its tolerance as well as its narrow houses and broad canals, Amsterdam is undergoing a change of attitude when it comes to the millions of tourists that come to see it each year. Tolerance has reached its limits in the capital of Dutch, which is now actively urging visitors to head elsewhere.
Ellen van Loon, a partner at Dutch architectural firm OMA says, “We don’t want to turn into a Venice. While tourism earns the Dutch economy around 82 billion Euros a year, the problem we are currently facing is that Amsterdam is so loved by tourists, we just have so many coming to the city.”
Netherlands tourist officials recently took the decision to stop advertising the country as a tourist destination. Their “Perspective 2030” report, published earlier this year, stated that the focus will now be on “destination management” rather than “destination promoting”. The document also describes the country’s future strategy, acknowledging that Amsterdam’s livability will be severely influenced by “visitor overload” if action isn’t taken.
Solutions listed include working to discourage groups of visitors by either limiting or completely shutting down accommodation and entertainment products aimed at them, as well as spreading visitors to other parts of the Netherlands. Some of these measures have already come into play. Last year, the famous “I Amsterdam” sign was removed from outside the Rijksmuseum, the city’s main art gallery. The two-meter high letters have been moved to various “lesser-known neighborhoods” in a bid to entice travelers to leave the center of the city.
But will the measures being put in place be enough to save it from being damaged by its own success? Like many other locals, Van Loon fears Amsterdam has lost its uniqueness forever. “The reason tourists come here is that there’s something in the character of Amsterdam they love,” she explains. “But at a certain point, when the number of tourists is increasing and increasing, they actually kill what they loved in the first place.”

22、Jennifer Williams is a teacher from Virginia who loves reading. 【1】 So she decided to give away 1 million books to people in her small town. By doing so, she’s earned a nickname “book lady”.
Since Williams started this activity in 2017, she’s given away more than 63,000 books, mostly to students. Williams had this idea after she noticed that the students she taught would ask her to keep the books they were reading together. And they would ask her to read more books to them. So, one summer, she made a goal to give away 300 books to the school where she has worked. 【2】
But even after she met her goal, she didn’t stop here. Williams started collecting donations and buying books out of her own pocket. Every year, she gives a book to each student at her local primary school. 【3】 Standing across the street are 16 tiny libraries that Williams has kept. She also leaves books on picnic tables, but she doesn’t usually leave a note.
【4】 Williams said her community has united to help her achieve her goal. She often returns home with boxes of donated books. Williams said that of the 63,000 books she’s given away, 99% first sat on her living room floor.
As for Williams, she said she didn’t plan to slow down anytime soon. 【5】 “There are still lots of people who don’t have books to read. I’m just trying to do something to help them,” she said.
A.Her community is very supportive, too.
B.Her goal is to keep doing what she is doing now.
C.She also gives books to other people in other ways.
D.Williams also teaches creative writing at a book club.
E.She asked people she knew if they’d like to donate to children.

23、Global economic development, in combination with climate change, is expected to result in over a billion new consumers installing air-conditioning systems in the coming decades. Consequently, it will make cooling by far the largest use of electricity in the global building sector.
Since the mid-20th century, the main way of supplying cooling to people in indoor environments has been through central air-conditioning systems. To prevent a large amount of heat loss, buildings have been designed with sealed envelopes, which do not allow fresh air as we would get if we were able to open windows in an office building. Air-conditioning technology changed the way we design buildings at the cost of disease transmission.
Is there an alternative to AC that can still provide thermal comfort without needing to consume much energy in the process of cooling the air? A group of researchers developed a simple and cheap solution to keeping people comfortable without regulating the temperature of large volumes of indoor air.
Their technology relies on the concept of radiant heat transfer, which involves the cooling or heating of the surfaces surrounding people, instead of cooling or heating the air. Radiant heating is the feeling of the hot sun on our face during a cool spring day. Radiant cooing is the same physics, but in the opposite direction.
In an initial demonstration of the radiant system that was installed in Singapore, it was calked “Cold Tube.” Researchers made people feel with 100 percent fresh air using 50 percent less energy, and therefore, it saved half the associated carbon emissions required by a typical air conditioner.
People may all be accustomed to traditional air conditioners. Radiant systems indeed are much better than traditional ones, but before they are widely adopted, people first need to get accustomed to the idea of getting comfortable by changing the temperature of surfaces, not the air. There’s still a long way too. After all, major technological change is not always easy to be accepted by he public.
【1】What can we know about the traditional air-conditioning system?
A.It is hard to install in tall buildings.
B.It poses a great risk to people’s health.
C.It causes too much heat loss in buildings.
D.It increases the difficulty of building design.
【2】The researchers’ alternative to AC may be an example of ______.
A.reaping what you sow
B.casting pearls before swine
C.killing two birds with one stone
D.putting all the eggs in one basket
【3】What does the case of “Cold Tube” in Singapore reflect?
A.The radiant system has been widely accepted in Singapore.
B.Singapore needs to solve the energy problems urgently.
C.Singapore is more advanced in modern technology.
D.The radiant system is effective and energy-efficient.
【4】What’s the author’s attitude towards the prospect of the radiant system?
A.Positive.
B.Ambiguous.
C.Objective.
D.Critical.
24、Shakespeare and Company is a bookstore unlike any other. It was home to the Lost Generation in the 1920s, the Beat Generation in the 1950s, and should be a place any literary (文学) lover dreams of visiting in Paris today.
An American serviceman, George Whitman, opened a bookstore in 1951 on Paris’ Left Bank. He chose an old 16th-century monastery(修道院) for his new business; it’s just minutes from the famous Notre Dame Cathedral and on the steps of the Seine River. It became one of the most famous bookstores in the world and quickly gathered a reputation where literary types from the Beat Generation would always find a home through the 1950s and 60s.
This bookstore takes its name from an older store which was started in Paris in 1919 by a lady called Sylvia Beach. It was a literary heaven and home to the Lost Generation. Many like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway found like-minded people in the store. Sylvia Beach left the official name to George Whitman in the late 1950s and upon her death. He renamed his bookstore Shakespeare and Company in her and the store’s honor. Under George Whitman, the shop welcomed a new generation of writers, including Allen Ginsberg, Henry Miller, Anais Nin and Ray Bradbury.
Under George Whitman, writers devoted to writing were encouraged to stay in the bookstore and sleep in simple beds that were put around the place. He called these people the “tumbleweeds” —people who rolled around the place, hoping to write their best work. Tumbleweeds have always been offered a free basic bed for the night in exchange for a couple of hours’ work each day, the promise to read a book each day, and to write a one-page autobiography. Ethan Hawke was among the 30,000 tumbleweeds—he stayed there for six nights when he arrived in Paris at age 16. Since George Whitman’s death, it is his daughter Sylvia Whitman who runs the store.

During the Chinese New Year 2015, more than 3 billion red envelopes were sent and received online via WeChat, the most widely used mobile messaging application in China.
However, shaking out e-envelopes may make you slightly richer, but not necessarily healthier. Billions of Spring Festival e-envelopes exchanged on WeChat led to sleep loss, broken electronics and even injuries as people rushed to shake them open.
A man surnamed Xue in Xi'an city, Shaanxi province experienced a bittersweet Spring Festival this year, thanks to Shake the Envelope. On the Spring Festival Eve, Xue kept shaking the envelopes on WeChat while he was watching the Spring Festival Gala on TV.
Unfortunately, he didn’t get to know if he got any envelopes. Worse still, he dropped his phone accidentally on the floor and the phone bounced against the TV screen. In a second, the screens of both of his phone and his TV cracked.
