21、When Allen invited me to a camping trip to the mountains, I imagined us in a cosy cabin overlooking a lake, with a warm fireplace, hot cocoa and soft beds. But my happy imagination became a nightmare when Allen and his older brother, Leo, showed up with a truck filled with camping equipment — tents, sleeping bags and water bottles. We were going on survival training!
The ever-efficient Leo was keen to leave the city behind us and urged us to hurry. Several hours later, as we drove through the forest, the mountains seemed bigger than I remembered;the trees were larger, and the environment felt more threatening.
At the trailhead, Leo tied a sleeping bag onto my already heavy pack and lectured Allen and me on hiking rules. Then, with Leo in the lead, we set off along the narrow and steep dirt track that wound up the mountain.
After 6 hours of climbing, we finally reached the top. My legs aching, I dropped my pack and groaned but there was no time to rest. “We need to set up camp quickly,” said Leo. “There are dark clouds coming in. A storm is on its way.”
I thought he was kidding, but Leo was quite serious. He and Allen worked expertly, while I stood around and pretended to help, thunder rumbling in the distance. We just finished putting up the tent when it hit. The wind, thunder, and lightning were relentless.
Leo, sensing that I was scared, started telling us some stories about his camping adventures. But each time lightning lit up the tent and the thunder echoed, I jumped. “Don’t worry. Summer storms pass quickly,” said Leo, trying to comfort me. “And at least the rain will keep the bears away,” he said with a teasing smile, which was less comforting.
And just as quickly as the storm came rushing in, it passed, and we exited the tent. The view was incredible—I could see for miles. As darkness set in, I stared in wonder at the millions of glowing stars in the night sky.
I won’t lie—I was still wishing for a hot shower and a soft bed, but as I gazed upward at the Milky Way, I knew this was an adventure I would never forget.

22、Batteries can power anything from small sensors to large systems. While scientists are finding ways to make them smaller but even more powerful, problems can arise when these batteries are much larger and heavier than the devices themselves. University of Missouri(MU) researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient.
“To provide enough power, we need certain methods with high energy density (密度)”,said Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. “The radioisotope (放射性同位素) battery can provide power density that is much higher than chemical batteries.”
Kwon and his research team have been working on building a small nuclear battery, presently the size and thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro/nanoelectromechanical systems (MNEMS). Although nuclear batteries can cause concerns, Kwon said they are safe.
“People hear the word ‘nuclear’ and think of something very dangerous,” he said, “However, nuclear power sources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such as pace-makers, space satellites and underwater systems.”
His new idea is not only in the battery’s size, but also in its semiconductor(半导体). Kwon’s battery uses a liquid semiconductor rather than a solid semiconductor.
“The key part of using a radioactive battery is that when you harvest the energy, part of the radiation energy can damage the lattice structure(晶体结构) of the solid semiconductor,” Kwon said, “By using a liquid semiconductor, we believe we can minimize that problem.”
Together with J. David Robertson, chemistry professor and associate director of the MU Research Reactor, Kwon is working to build and test the battery, In the future, they hope to increase the battery’s power, shrink its size and try with various other materials. Kwon said that battery could be thinner than the thickness of human hair.

24、 Guangdong Province is set to make swimming lessons compulsory (必修的) in primary schools starting from 2020, and suggesting the courses be given from the fourth grade. Do we need to make swimming compulsory in schools? Forum readers share their opinions.
White Bear (Poland)
In Poland swimming lessons are not compulsory, but most of the schools have them. I think that when it is only possible -- there should be the swimming lessons for kids. It is a lifesaving skill.
Mister Panda (France)
I come from France where swimming lessons in school are compulsory. I even got my lifesaving certificate (证书) in school.
Jet. feng (China)
As a boy born in a rural area, I learnt swimming in a river near my home when I was 7 or 8 years old. I just learnt how to dog paddle (breaststroke) because no one taught me. Until I entered university, I got a chance to improve my swimming skills in PE lessons. Compared with my classmates, I felt lucky because most of them couldn't swim. I think it’s a good idea for schools to teach students to swim.
Boilermaker21 (Unknown)
There are swimming lessons in my city, but I felt upset about how they were taught. The kids spent 45 minutes of the one hour lesson practicing strokes ON DRY LAND. They only spent 15 minutes in the water. All of the children panicked (惊恐) and sank immediately to the bottom. Then all of the parents scolded the children, telling them that they weren't paying attention to the teacher and that they were failures.
Cecilia Zhang (China)
It is a pity that many Chinese athletes won world championships in swimming while most schools don't have the swimming facilities. Swimming is an essential lifesaving skill that everyone should access to. The earlier, the better. The government needs to put money into the popularity of the sport.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I still remember it,like it was yesterday when my parents told me the news. It was the week before Christmas on Thursday morning when my parents said, “Stacy, start packing your things so we can go to Florida for the holidays.”
“Okay, ”I responded. We do this every year for Christmas and New Year. It’s kind of a family tradition we have.We go every year because we like to visit some family members living in Florida. There has never been a year when we’ve missed a trip to Florida for the holidays. I was so excited to go on this trip because Christmas is my favorite holiday, but to top it off I was going to get to celebrate it with my family.
The next morning, my mother entered my room. “Stacy, wake up! We need to go to the airport so that we can get our plane tickets to Florida before they sell out.”
I jumped out of bed and got ready as fast as I could. When we were on our way to the airport,I couldn’t stop talking and smiling because I was too excited about getting our tickets.
“Aren’t you just excited to go to Florida?” I asked.
“Yes, I am.We can finally catch up with the family and drink hot cocoa,” responded my mother.
The airport was so crowded. Some people were leaving to other countries and others were just visiting for the holiday. There was such a huge line in the airport because so many different people were buying plane tickets.
When it was our turn, my mother said, “Three tickets to Florida on Christmas Eve please.”
The lady working there responded, “Well, you guys are lucky. You got the last three tickets to Florida.”
My mother and I both smiled in relief and paid for our tickets and went back home to finish packing.
