21、Dear Customers,
I love slipping into a comfortable chair for a long read—as I relax into the chair, I also relax into the author’s words, stories and ideas. The paper book is so elegant that it disappears into the background, and what remains is the author’s world.
Today, we at Amazon are excited to announce Mindle, a wireless, portable(便携的) reading device(装置) with instant access to more than 90,000 books, magazines and newspapers.
We’ve been working on Mindle for more than three years. Our top design goal was for Mindle to disappear in your hands, so you can enjoy your reading. We also wanted to go beyond the physical book. Mindle is wireless, so whether you’re lying in bed or riding a train, you can think of a book, and have it in less than 60 seconds. No computer is needed—you do your reading directly from the device.
We chose the same wireless technology used in advanced mobile phones. But unlike mobile phones, there are no monthly bills, no service or data plans, and no yearly contracts. There is no software to install(安装). We want you to get lost in your reading and not in the technology.
Mindle uses a new kind of display called electronic paper. Sharp and natural with no strong light, reading on Mindle is nothing like reading from a computer screen. Mindle weighs only 10.3 ounces—less than paperback—but can carry two hundred books.
Enjoy learning about Mindle and many thanks!
Jeff Bezos, Founder & CEO

22、Every superhero, no matter how small, needs a cape. That was Robyn Rosenberger’s motivation when she started sewing superhero capes for kids with cancer, heart defects, and other serious diseases. It all began when she was making a cape as a birthday present for her nephew. Rosenberger heard of a girl named Brenna who was battling a potentially deadly skin condition called harlequin ichthyosis. Anyone suffering from what she was going through had to be tough. “I had an aha moment (顿悟),” Rosenberger says. “Brenna was a superhero! She needed a cape.” So Rosenberger sent her one, and Brenna’s mother was delighted.
Rosenberger found ten more kids online and sent out ten more capes. Before long, she quit her job at a software company to dedicate herself full time to tinysuperheroes.com, a website where people can buy hand-made capes for brave kids facing illness and disability.
Since 2013, Rosenberger and her small paid staff have sent more than 12,000 handmade capes to kids in all 50 states and 15 other countries. The capes come in pink, blue, purple, or red and can be decorated with the child’s initials or specialized patches, including a heart, a rocket, or a lightning bolt. One recipient was eight-month-old Gabe, who was born with a cleft palate (腭裂), which causes distinct facial features. Rosenberger sent him a red cape with a bright yellow G in the center. It was a hit.
Gabe is now a fixture on the company’s social media posts. “The Tiny Superhero community has been a wonderful connection to have,” says Gabe’s mom, Kate Glocke. In fact, two years later, “We still bring Gabe’s cape with us to every hospital appointment.”

23、Nonprofits usually try to give donors a simple message: Donate $50 now to help someone in poverty. But how does your donation get to the person in need? And how do these international nonprofits actually operate?
Nonprofits are usually headquartered in the USA or Europe. Many of them have “field offices” in the under-developed countries where they work. These offices often employ locals or nationals understanding the language and culture. Larger nonprofits sometimes create local affiliates (分支). So when you donate to World Vision, for example, your gift may get passed on to World Vision Kenya, a semi-independent organization.
Other international nonprofits partner with local organizations, which are smaller nonprofits started by people in poorer countries so they could help people in their own communities. Here’s how the partnership usually works: the international nonprofit asks for donations and then passes them on to the local partners. I work for an international nonprofit called West African Vocational Schools (WAVS) and we partner with a local organization called Ponte da Vida.
International nonprofits know that many donors like to support children in poverty, so child sponsorship programs are a popular way to raise funds. But how those donations are actually used varies. World Vision, for example, uses child sponsorship funds to help everyone in a community. Usually, these are communities where most people are living in poverty. World Vision has learned the hard way that giving special treatment to one child isn’t a sustainable way to help people in poverty. Besides, it often has unintended consequences: children who don’t get free stuff feel jealous (嫉妒的).
WAVS has a different model. We encourage our donors to join One Student, a community of monthly givers who help equip young people in West Africa with life-changing job skills. They usually give $40/month because that’s how much it takes to cover the cost of training one student for one month. The donations are sent to Ponte da Vida, which uses the funds to operate WAVS vocational schools in West Africa.
Still have questions? Feel free to email me.

A.It causes negative effects.
B.It is helpful and effective.

A.Operating vocational schools in West Africa.
B.Teaching children life-changing job skills.

A.To call for donations.

24、Rich Anderson says he isn’t scared of sharks and he is appealing to others to learn to love them.
“I try to convince people that looking at a shark eye to eye is totally different to sitting on a surfboard or a boat looking at every shadow that goes underneath thinking it’s a shark coming to get them,” he said. “Eye to eye they look at you, you look at them and you go your own way.”
“I find that once people see their first sharks, their whole attitude changes. They realize that they are not as scary as what they thought they were,” Mr. Anderson said. He compares sharks to dogs, in the way they show their behavior and attitude towards humans. “You are not going to go up to a dog that it arching(拱起) its back and making a low sound in the throat at you,” he said. “If a shark is arching and its fins(鳍) are down, it’s telling you to move on.” He admits he thought the shark was trying to attack him the first few times.
Mr. Anderson is against the controversial policy introduced in Western Australia to kill a shark if it presents a threat to humans. He said many of the same things that occur in Western Australia are also happening in New South Wales.
Anderson said that sharks come closer to shore because they are attracted to the smell of whale bodies which have broken down after being buried in the sand on many beaches.
Mr. Anderson often sees gray nurse sharks, fur seals, leopard seals, penguins and fishes of a range of colours in the Pacific Ocean along Bellingen Shire. “Depending on the time of the year, you can get a good mixture of sea creatures moving through there,” he said. Tiger sharks are his favourite kind of sharks. He describes them as pig-headed but also elegant creatures.
【1】What does Mr. Anderson probably do?
A.A diver.
B.A surfer.
C.A boatman.
D.A fisherman.

B.Sharks are naturally friendly to human beings.
C.Sharks can send messages through their behavior.

【3】What mistake did Mr. Anderson once make?
A.He never looked at sharks eye to eye.
B.He once saw sharks as a scary animal.
C.He didn’t allow sharks to get close to shores.

【4】What do we know about the Pacific Ocean along Bellingen Shire?
A.It’s a popular tourist destination.
B.It’s open in certain times of the year.
C.It’s Mr. Anderson’s favorite place.
