二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Istman Simon’s factory in western Hungary produces more than one million plastic parts every day. But on a busy morning in one of its large production areas, there is only the sound of machines.Workers have all but disappeared.

“We can see human workers being replaced with AI machines. It has already led to job losses,” said Zoltan Laszlo, a Hungarian workers’ leader.

Hungary’s economy grew nearly 5 percent last year. Yet the industry lost nearly 23,000 jobs, ending six straight years of employment growth. In the Czech Republic, employment numbers showed a year-on-year loss of almost a thousand jobs between July and September of last year. This suggests employment could have decreased for the first time since 2013 over the full year in Eastern Europe.

“Workers are becoming more expensive. This is the necessary way to get returns,” said Peter Simon, a manager of Simon Plastics, which is hoping to expand production. But pressured (挤压) by increasing human costs and falling product prices, the plastic industry spent over $3 billion on AI machines last year, he added.

“Employment numbers are one sign that Eastern Europe’s industry may be at a turning point,” said David Marek, an economist with Deloitte. “The average (平均的) yearly increase in human costs in the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary is around 10 percent. That is far higher than in many western countries. Factory owners find themselves with little choice but to buy machinery if they want to remain competitive.”

Josef Stredula is the head of the Czech-Moravian Trade Unions. He notes that up to 10 percent of jobs could disappear in the next five years.

“Big changes are awaiting us,” Stredula said. He added that although AI machines might free people from heavy or boring physical work, it was important to ease the change, for example, by retraining affected workers. “We have to do everything to make the future easier for everyone,” he said.

1What are the first three paragraphs mainly about?

    A.The problems with Hungary’s economy.

B.A factory with advanced AI technology.

C.The worries of a Hungarian workers’ leader.

D.The increasing job losses in Eastern Europe.

2What does Peter Simon really want to say?

A.He is worried about the falling product prices.

B.Simon Plastics’ products are very competitive.

C.The workers are too expensive in western Hungary.

D.The plastic industry has to use more AI machines.

3What is Josef Stredula’s main attitude to the AI machines?

    A.Doubtful. B.Uncaring. C.Concerned. D.Unsupportive.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.AI Machines Are Pushing Workers Out of Their Jobs in Eastern Europe

B.Rising Workers’ Payments Lead to Big Job Losses in Eastern Europe

C.Eastern European Factories Have Found Ways to Cut Production Costs

D.Eastern European Workers Are Freed From Heavy and Boring Works

  • 22、   In the 1990s, a psychologist named Martin Seligman led the positive psychology movement, which placed the study of human happiness squarely at the center of psychology research and theory.

Since then, thousands of studies and hundreds of books have been published with the goal of increasing well-being and helping people lead more satisfying lives. But for over 40 years, self-reported measures of happiness have stayed stagnant(停滞的). Such efforts to improve happiness have been an ineffective attempt to swim against the tide, as we may actually be programmed to be dissatisfied most of the time. Why aren't we happier?

Part of the problem is that happiness isn't just one thing. Jennifer Hecht, a philosopher who studies the history of happiness, proposes that we all experience different types of happiness, which are not necessarily complementary Some types of happiness may even conflict with one another. In other words, having too much of one type of happiness may weaken our ability to have enough of the others. For example, a satisfying life is built on a successful career and a good marriage. It takes a lot of work and often requires cutting back on many of life's pleasures. That means we can't spend one pleasant lazy day after another in the company of good friends.

This difficult situation becomes more confused by the way our brains process the experience of happiness. A lot of evidence shows that most of the people possess something called the optimistic bias. They tend to think that their future will be better than the present.

Cognitive psychologists have also identified something called the Pollyanna Principle. It means that people process, rehearse and remember pleasant information more than unpleasant information. Why the good old days seem so good is because we focus on the pleasant stuff and tend to forget the unpleasantness. And if our past is great and our future can be even better, then we can work our way out of the unpleasant present.

Dissatisfaction with the present and dreams of the future are what keep us motivated. In fact, endless happiness would completely destroy our will. Among our earliest ancestors, those who were perfectly content may have been left in the dust.

Recognizing that happiness exists may help us appreciate it more when it arrives.  Furthermore, understanding that it's impossible to have happiness in all aspects of life can help us enjoy the happiness that has touched us. Recognizing that no one "has it all" can cut down on the one thing that psychologists know prevents happiness: envy.

【1】We can learn from Paragraph 2 that people________.

    A.are born to be dissatisfied

B.will never be happier than before

C.fail to achieve their desire for happiness

D.find it impossible to measure their happiness

    【2】Jennifer Hecht states that________.

A.happiness needs to be experienced without limits

B.people can't have all types of happiness at the same time

C.different people have different types of happiness

D.different types of happiness always conflict with one another

【3】Which of the following cases belongs to Pollyanna Principle?

A.People focus on the nice things in the past.

B.People tend to recall their past failures alone.

C.People are usually disappointed with what they have.

D.People consider their future to be better than the present.

【4】According to the passage, lack of happiness at present________.

A.restricts our ability of achieving goals

B.leads to our envying others' happiness

C.enables people to feel perfectly content

D.motivates people to seek more happiness

  • 23、Leonardo da Vinci, one of the greatest thinkers in the world, began his career as an artist. Very little is known about Leonardo’s early life. He was born in 1452 in the town of Vinci. As a boy, Leonardo showed a great interest in drawing, sculpting and observing nature.

However, because Leonardo was born to parents who were not married to each other, he was barred from some studies and professions. He trained as an artist after moving to Florence with his father in the 1460s. It was an exciting time to be in Florence, one of the cultural capitals of Europe. Leonardo trained with one of the city’s very successful artists, Andrea del Verrocchio. He was a painter, sculptor and gold worker. Verrocchio told his students that they needed to understand the body’s bones and muscles when drawing people.

Leonardo took the teacher’s advice very seriously. He spent several periods of his life studying the human body by taking apart and examining dead bodies. While training as an artist, Leonardo also learned about and improved on relatively new painting methods at the time. One was the use of perspective(透视) to show depth. A method called “sfumato” helped to create a cloudy effect to suggest distance. “Chiaroscuro” is a method using light and shade as a painterly effect.

Leonardo’s first known portrait now hangs in the National Gallery in Washington, D. C. He made this painting of a young woman named Ginevra de’ Benci around 1474. The woman has a pale face with dark hair. In the distance, Leonardo painted the Italian countryside.

He soon received attention for his extraordinary artistic skills. Around 1475 he was asked to draw an angel in Verrocchio’s painting “Baptism of Christ.” One story says that when Verrocchio saw Leonardo’s addition to the painting, he was so amazed by his student’s skill that he said he would never paint again.

1Which of the following words can be used to describe Leonardo according to the third paragraph?

    A. Stubborn.   B. Creative.

    C. Pessimistic.   D. Determined.

2What can we learn from the last paragraph?

    A. Verrocchio felt shame at his own work.

    B. Verrocchio thought Leonardo’s work terrible.

    C. Verrocchio thought highly of Leonardo’s work.

    D. Verrocchio didn’t believe Leonardo could paint well.

3Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. Leonardo was prevented from some studies because of his parents.

    B. Leonardo thought his teacher’s advice was unreasonable.

    C. “Sfumato” is a method to show depth by using light and shade.

    D. “Baptism of Christ” made Leonardo known across the world.

Once there was a little boy called Adam who came from a rich family. He was a young student at primary school, and was very clever. He always gained good marks in his assessment exams.

Adam got everything he wanted, such as toy cars, airplane models, water guns and so on. His parents bought him whatever he wanted, and Adam loved to add new items to his collection of toys. One day he went out to a store with his mother and in the toy section he found a very cool toy car which could play different kinds of sounds that a car could make. He was surprised to see that kind of toy car, so he ran to his mother and told her everything about it. Adam took his mother to the toy section to show how it worked. However, his mother refused to buy it for him because he already had a lot of toy cars. Adam was sad and wondered why his mother did not buy it for him, especially since that toy car was rather cheap.

Two weeks later, Adam and his mother went to the same store again. Adam thought that his mother would buy it for him this time, so he asked his mother about the toy car again. His mother ignored him because she was looking for something else. But Adam really wanted the toy car.

So, while his mother was busy looking for some other items, he took the toy car and put it inside his backpack. The salesman saw Adam stealing the toy car and tried to stop him. Adam tried to run hut the salesman caught him. Adam started to cry. His mother heard his voice and ran to him. She was shocked to see the salesman holding her son.
