二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、When someone asks me what my goals are for the coming year, I don’t usually know how to reply. Of course I, as most people do, want to see an improvement in my grades. This year, however, I’m hoping for something different.

Through the course of my school life, I’ve gradually developed a new understanding of the word “prioritization (优先次序)”. The first thing I wish to get in Senior One is the ability to spend my time better. I’ll surely become busier with the coming semester, and proper organization is important. From school clubs to academic (学术的) competitions, everything should be set up in a way that doesn’t influence my health, which leads me to my second goal.

My mother has always told me to put my health first, so in the future, I hope to both physically and mentally healthy. A person can’t study without having the energy to do so. In order to stay energetic, they must put their health first, no matter how busy they are, or how much work they have to complete.

And finally, I hope that I won’t be discouraged by my failure and never give up on my dreams. I hope that I’ll have the courage to try new activities and clubs. I believe my final goal can apply to every student around the world. We should all respect each other’s likes and dislikes, and focus on each other’s strengths, not our weaknesses. Everyone should try to take part in all kinds of opportunities.

Albert Einstein once said, “life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” In my case, it’s the other way around. In order to keep moving, I must keep my balance — the balance between studies and activities, efficiency and procrastination (拖延症), academics and health, passions and dislikes. The new journey is going to be a hard one, but if I establish these goals, I believe I will make it through to the end.

【1】During this school year, what does the author hope to do?

A.Focus on improving her overall grades.

B.Join as many school clubs as possible.

C.Spend more time on outdoor activities.

D.Learn how to manage her time well.

【2】According to Para.4, which of the following may the author agree with?

    A.Not be afraid of challenges.

    B.Always put their studies first.

C.Only do what they’re good at.

    D.Make different kinds of friends.

【3】What does the underlined word “passions” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.A strong feeling of dislike

    B.A strong feeling of anger

    C.A strong feeling of like

    D.A strong feeling of joy

【4】What does the author intend to tell us in the article?

A.Show what she likes about high school life.

B.Stress the importance of health to students.

C.Share her goals for the coming high school year.

D.Show how to balance studies and activities.

  • 22、   “Are personal sad stories a must to win talent shows?” “Shouldn’t talent be judged on the basis of itself without needing a sad story of struggle to win?” These are questions Sanya Malhotra posed on a recent Facebook post.

This morning I came across this interesting post by Sanya Malhotra. She revealed that she loved dancing and dreamt of becoming an actress, but got defeated in “Dance India Dance” because her background story wasn’t sad and inspiring enough. That’s when she started doubting her artistic gift.

This really set me thinking. Why are people attracted to sob stories? Why do we always appreciate only those people who have achieved something after going through a lot of hardships?  Why does the headline of a newspaper “Taxi-driver’s Son Stands First In UPSC Exam” find more readers? I think it is because most people, who are in a similar situation, find it comforting that someone has succeeded with so many hardships. I know it is really very difficult for people with financial, health, or family problems to overcome obstacles and succeed. I really feel proud of them and I am often touched and inspired by their stories.

Now come back to what Sanya has said. I think this is a talent show rather than a story-telling competition. When it comes to a competition of singing or dancing or any fine arts, all the competitors should be judged without any bias (偏见). No one should lose because they don’t have a sad story of struggle to tell. It’s very unfair. They can be given opportunities otherwise, but should not be judged because of their stories.

Maybe, the TV channels do it to attract more viewers, because the most important element of any reality show is these touching stories. But as Sanya has said, it’s unfair to those who haven't such a story and are equally talented.

1What do we know about Sanya Malhotra?

A.She entered a talent show. B.She won “Dance India Dance”.

C.She had a sad story to tell. D.She was rejected in a film.

2From the second paragraph, we can infer that Sanya Malhotra________.

A.experienced many hardships B.is a famous actress in Indian

C.has a great gift for gymnastics D.used to be confident in her artistic talent

3Which of the following headlines appeals to the readers most according to the passage?

A.A Millionaire Donated Money To Harvard University.

B.A Gifted Indian Teenager Won “Dance India Dance”.

C.An Armless Girl Was Admitted To Harvard University.

D.A Freshman Paid Off Loans By Getting A Part-time Job.

4Which of the following is the best title of the passage?

A.Winners Should Be Determined By Public Judges

B.Sanya Malhotra Displayed A Great Artistic Gift

C.Competitors Should Not Be Judged By Sob Stories

D.Talent Shows Competitors Can Tell Their Stories

  • 23、Last week when I was reading at home, my younger sister rushed in and told me an old man was lying on the round in front of our building. I immediately took my first-aid kit and ran downstairs. He was suffering a slight heart attack. And I performed CPR on him. Luckily, an ambulance came soon and he was taken to hospital. Later that day I was told by the hospital what I did helped rescue the old man’s life. 【1】. However, at the same time I fell a bit sad. There were many people who wanted to help around the old man then. Yet no one performed first aid on him as they hadn’t attended a first-aid course. I think everyone should learn at least some basic first-aid techniques, which can be very important. 【2】.

You can gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to act in an emergency. You never know when you might need them — you could be at home, at work, at school or on holiday. 【3】, you can act whenever you’re needed.

You can be a resource for your community. For your family, your neighbors or the broader community, having more people with first-aid skills helps build a stronger and more harmonious community.

You can stay safe at work. Illness and injury can happen anywhere, anytime. 【4】, and you can also help meet your workplace’s safety requirements.

【5】. The first-hand experience you gain through learning first aid and using your skills could help you decide if you want to pursue a career in the health profession. It also shows your commitment to a career in the health profession when it comes to applying for jobs.

  • 24、In cold winter months, lakes and rivers freeze over, forming ice. Yet, fish and other aquatic(水生的)animals manage to survive. How do they do it?

That's because only the top layer(层)of the lake or river freezes, while under the frozen layer, the water remains in its liquid form and does not freeze. Also, oxygen is trapped under the layer of ice. As a result, fish and other aquatic animals find it possible to live comfortably in the frozen lakes and ponds.

But why doesn't the entire body of water freeze, like a large, lake - sized ice block? Generally, all liquids expand on heating, but water is an exception to this rule. If water is heated, its volume(体积)gradually reduces. At temperatures over 4℃ water starts expanding. It then keeps expanding with the further rise in temperature, till finally at100℃ it turns into steam or evaporates(蒸发). In other words, at 4℃, water takes up the least amount of space and it is at its heaviest. This irregular expansion of water is called abnormal expansion, which plays an important role in only freezing the upper layer of lakes and rivers.

When the temperature of the surface layer falls to 4℃, the water body becomes the heaviest and sinks down while the lower water rises up until the temperature of the water body finally goes below 4℃. The surface water finally fees at 0℃, floating on top while the lower part still remains at 4℃.

Ice does not allow heat to pass through it easily, so the freeing of the waters below is a very slow process. At depths low 30 meters, temperatures are cold and sable, but food is scarce. As a result, animals have adapted to this situation by growing more slowly but outlive many other creatures on Earth.

【1】Why can fish live in frozen lakes or rivers?

A.There is air under the layer of ice

B.There are always many holes in the ice.

C.They will stay asleep in winter.

D.They can make oxygen with water.

【2】What makes water special compared to other liquids?

    A.It is colorless.

B.It has three forms of state.

    C.It can freeze at 4℃.

    D.Its expansion is irregular.

【3】What happens to the surface water when it drops to 4℃?

    A.It remains still.

    B.It goes down.

    C.It begins to expand.

    D.It starts to freeze.

【4】What does the underlined word “scarce” in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A.Inadequate.

    B.Fresh.

    C.Natural.

    D.Delicious.

  • 25、Corporate America is struggling to adapt to Gen Z

In recent months, the payments company Visa has quietly started to offer customers a new feature: a digital tool that lets them cap spending in a personalized way, for example by _________ the bill at coffee bars to a preset limit each week. Nothing odd about that, you might think.

With inflation (通货膨胀) weakening household _________, and credit card debt at record highs in countries such as the US, consumers have reasons to do so.

But look a little closer, and there is a twist: Visa’s move is partly sparked by an urge to _________the behaviour of “Gen Z”, or the group of people born between 1997 and 2012.

“Gen Z wants control,” explains Charlotte Hogg, chief executive of Visa Europe, who says the company is _________ trying to figure out how these teens and young adults think and behave.

Since most business leaders today are “baby boomers,” or members of “Gen X”, (born, that is, between 1946 and 1964, or 1965 and 1980, respectively), many feel confused by Gen Z, and assume they are _________ to “millennials” (or those born between 1981 and 1996). This assumption is not entirely wrong. A recent study by the consultancy Oliver Wyman, which _________ 150,000 Gen Z-ers over two years, shows that this generation cares far more deeply about social and environmental issues than their elders, and expects digital and “real-world” experiences to be _________, as they have grown up surrounded by more technology than previous generations. In this respect, they are similar to millennials. _________, Gen Z has a higher rate of self-reported mental health issues than millennials, and its members prefer to get their information from _________ rather than authority figures. These findings, which __________ similar studies by McKinsey, undoubtedly reflect the fact that Gen Z-ers are digital natives whose lives have been shaped by the __________of the global financial crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

But the most striking issue that defines Gen Z is something else: __________. Accustomed to digitization and smartphones, they consider it entirely normal and desirable to __________ everything — from their music, media, food and holidays to their politics, gender identities and working practices. I call this the era of “Gen P”, which has led to the rise of a “pick’n’mix” or “playlist” approach to life, in which personal choice __________. To Gen Z the idea of accepting preselected roles or consumption packages feels as __________ as only listening to music on the radio picked by somebody else. Instead they want to exercise choice.
