  • 21、For more and more young Chinese professionals, the first day back at work after the Lunar New Year holiday is the day they quit.

The period after the Lunar New Year holiday, also known as Spring Festival, often sees Chinese workers on the move. This year, the number looking for new opportunities is supposed to be especially high.

Mr. Zhu, a 27-year-old Beijing native, is one of the young workers looking for a better deal. “Salary is a big concern for me and I need a job that pays more, and my department can’t provide good career development for me,” he said.

An online survey by Zhaopin.com, a leading job-hunting website, provides further details on why China’s young white-collar workers are so keen to move on.

Low salaries are the biggest concern for 62% of the job-hunters, and overtime and a wide mismatch between low salaries and high housing costs are also the complaints. Two-thirds of them said they had to work at home after office hours, and a full 95% said they felt they were under heavy pressure because of the housing payment or rent.

The survey also found that what was seen as a “good job” has changed. For the generation born in the 1970s, high salary and status is the key. For the generation born after 1980, work-life balance and respect in the office are also important.

Zhao Bin, a 28-year-old woman who earns over 7,000 yuan a month working at a public relations company in Shanghai, said she would wait until the Lunar New Year to change her job. “My salary is OK for me, but I am working like crazy. So I want to find something comfortable, like being an English teacher in training schools.”

1Mr. Zhu is looking for a new job because ________.

    A. he was fired before the Lunar New Year holiday

    B. he was promised a better job

    C. he wants a job better in salary and in development

    D. he was advised to do so

2Which of the following can best take the place of the underlined words “a wide mismatch”?

    A. a big gap   B. a lost game

    C. a hot debate   D. a failed marriage

3The writer uses the example of Zhao Bin to prove that ________.

    A. salary is the first concern for people who change jobs

    B. young people are under pressure of high housing prices

    C. young people tend to value work-life balance

    D. teacher has become a good job for Chinese youth

4The article is intended to ________.

    A. encourage Chinese white-collar workers to change jobs

    B. present a social phenomenon and explain its causes

    C. carry out an online survey to readers

    D. compare different reasons why people quit jobs

  • 22、In anticipation (预料) of an extraordinary visit, the streets and buildings of Havana, Cuba, were cleaned and painted by dozens of workers. What was the occasion?

For the first time in nearly 90 years, a sitting United States president was coming to Cuba, an island nation 90 miles south of Florida. On Sunday, President Barack Obama, joined by his family, stepped off Air Force One and onto a rainy runway, where Cuban dignitaries (高官) eagerly awaited him. “It’s wonderful to be here, the president said. The last time a U.S. president came to Cuba was in 1928. It was President Calvin Coolidge, and he arrived on a battleship. Obama will be in Cuba through Tuesday. He is set to meet with Cuba’s president, Raul Castro, attend a state dinner and even take in a baseball game.

The U.S. cut all ties with Cuba after Fidel Castro’s communist government took control of the island in 1959. In the years that followed, both countries’ opposing political views furthered the separation. Plans for social and economic change began after President Fidel Castro transferred power to his brother, Raul in 2008. Raul Castro then set a plan in motion to revive the country’s economy.

Since then, Cuba has been taking small, yet lasting steps toward change by removing a number of restrictions that had been set on its citizens, such as access to the Internet, the use of cellphones, and by allowing people to work at jobs not controlled by the government. Cuba, however, still has tough limits on media, public assembly and political opposition.

Obama hopes to share his vision for Cuba’s future during a speech he will deliver. Before the trip, Senior Advisor Ben Rhodes said the president hoped to use this visit as a way to “continue to create openings for great engagement between the American and Cuban people.”

【1】What is stressed in the second paragraph?

    A. Fidel Castro rose to power.

    B. Raul Castro came to power.

    C. Calvin Coolidge arrived in Cuba.

    D. The U.S. officials arrived in Cuba.

【3】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. Cuba is central to conflict.

    B. Cuba takes on media freedoms.

    C. Cuba is working towards progress.

    C. To break silence and no communications.

    D. To give Mr Castro a list of political views.

  • 23、   Brriiinnng... ... The alarm clock announces the start of another busy weekday in the morning. You jump out of bed, rush into the showerinto your clothes and out the door with hardly a moment to think. A stressful journey to work gets your blood pressure climbing. Once at the  office, you glance through the newspaper with depressing stories or reports of disasters. In that sort of moodwho can get down to work, particularly some creative, original problem-solving work?

The way most of us spend our mornings is exactly opposite to the conditions that promote flexible,open-minded thinking. Imaginative ideas are most likely to come to us when we’re unfocused. If you are one of those energetic morning people, your most inventive time comes in the early evening when you are relaxed. Sleepy people’s lack of focus leads to an increase in creative problem solving. By not giving yourself time to tune into your wandering mind, you’re missing out on the surprising solutions it may offer. The trip you take to work doesn’t help, either. The stress slows down the speed with which signals travel between neurons(神经细胞)making inspirations less likely to occur. And while we all should read a lot about what’s going on in the world, it would not make you feel good for sure, so put that news website or newspaper aside until after the day’s work is done.

So what would our mornings look like if we wanted to start them with a full capacity for creative problem solving? We’d set the alarm a few minutes early and lie awake in bedfollowing our thoughts where they lead. We'd stand a little longer under the warm water of the showerstopping thinking about tasks in favor of a few more minutes of relaxation. We’d take some deep breaths on our way to work, instead of complaining about heavy traffic. And once in the office —we’d click on links not to the news of the day but to the funniest videos the web has to offer.

1According to the author, we are more creative when we are______.

    A.focused B.awake C.relaxed D.busy

2What does the author imply about newspapers? _______

A.They are solution providers. B.They are normally full of bad news.

C.They are a source of inspiration. D.They are more educational than websites.

3By “tune into your wandering mind” (in Para. 2)the author means “ ”.

A.wander into the wild B.listen to a beautiful tune

C.switch to the traffic channel D.stop concentrating on anything

4What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph? ________

A.To offer practical suggestions. B.To summarize past experiences.

C.To advocate diverse ways of life. D.To set up a routine for the future.

  • 24、The extraordinary Eastgate Building in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital city, is said to be the only one in the world to use the same cooling and heating principles as the termite mound(白蚁堆).

Architect Mick Pearce used precisely the same strategy when designing the Eastgate Building, which has no air-conditioning and almost no heating. The building—the country’s largest commercial and shopping complex—uses less than 10% of the energy of a conventional building of its size. The Eastgate’s owners saved $3.5 million on a $36 million building because an air-conditioning equipment didn’t have to be imported.

The complex is actually two buildings linked by bridges across a shady, glass-roofed atrium(天井) open to the air. Fans suck fresh air in from the atrium, blow it upstairs through hollow spaces under the floors and from there into each office through baseboard vents(通风口). Asitrises and warms, it is drawn out via ceiling vents and finally exists through forty-eight brick chimneys.

During summer’s cool nights, big fans blow air through the building seven times an hour to cool the empty floors. By day, smaller fans blow two changes of air an hour through the building, to circulate the air which has been in contact with the cool floors. For winter days, there are small heaters in the vents.

This is all possible only because Harare is 1600 feet above sea level, has cloudless skies, little dampness and rapid temperature changes—days as warm as 31℃ commonly drop to 14℃ at night. “You couldn’t do this in New York, with its hot summers and cold winters,” Pearce said.

The engineering firm of Ove Arup & Partners monitors daily temperatures. It is found that the temperature of the building has generally stayed between 23℃ and 25℃, with the exception of the annual hot period just before the summer rains in October and three days in November, when a doorkeeper accidentally switched off the fans at night. And the air is fresh—far more so than in air-conditioned buildings, where up to 30% of the air is recycled.

1Why was Eastgate cheaper to be built than a conventional building?

    A. It was designed in a smaller size.

    B. No air conditioners were fixed in.

    C. Its heating system was less advanced.

    D. It used rather different building materials.

2What does “it” refer to in Paragraph 3?

    A. Hollow space.

    B. Baseboard vent.

    C. Fresh air from outside.

    D. Heat in the building.

3Why would a building like Eastgate Not work efficiently in New York?

    A. New York has less clear skies as Harare.

    B. Its dampness affects the circulation of air.

    C. New York covers a larger area than Harare.

    D. Its temperature changes seasonally rather than daily.

4The data in the last paragraph suggests Eastgate’s temperature control system_____.

    A. works better in hot seasons

    B. can recycle up to 30% of the air

    C. functions well for most of the year

    D. allows a wide range of temperatures
