二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Astronomers breathed a sigh of relief as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) sprung to life. JWST would not fit into any modern rocket without being folded. However, ultimately the telescope has started returning some of its first images to thrilled audiences back on Earth.

Yet the experience left many astronomers wondering if there was a simpler way to launch telescopes of this size. “We were worried about the unfolding,” says John Blevins of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. But with a larger rocket, “you don’t have to unfold in space. You can do it on the ground.”

As chance would have it, two such rockets are currently sitting on launchpads. The first, NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS), is ready and waiting at Kennedy Space Center in Florida for its voyage this summer. But a reliance on tried-and-true technology could be its Achilles’ heel: some estimates currently keep the SLS’s cost at $4.1 billion per launch. If approved, though, its massive size could ultimately be a boon for scientists seeking to send larger, more ambitious spacecraft and telescopes throughout the solar system and even beyond.

Over in Texas, Starship, a similarly capable but wildly different rocket being developed by SpaceX, also in preparation to launch on its first orbital test fight. Usually, each rocket will be deserted after a single use, its components degraded to junk on the seafloor or adrift in space. But Starship is instead built for endurance, landing back on the ground for rapid reuse, which has already dramatically lowered the expense of reaching space.

As big and bold as the SLS may be, experts say that it pales in comparison with what Starship could achieve. “Starship holds the promise of transforming the solar system in a way we can’t really appreciate,” says Alan Stem, “It completely changes the game.”

【1】Which of the following added to the uncertainty of JWST’s operation?

A.JWST had to be unfolded on the ground.

    B.The launching technology was limited.

C.JWST had to be unfolded in space.

    D.The launching cost was high.

【2】What is an advantage of SLS?

    A.It’s efficiency.

    B.It’s capacity.

    C.It’s range.

    D.It’s speed.

【3】What do we know about Starship in Paragraph 4?

A.It will be recycled in space.

B.It is not available for launching.

C.It has reduced the cost of reaching space.

D.It will be abandoned after a single use.

【4】What’s the experts’ attitude towards the future of Starship?

    A.Hopeful.

    B.Worried.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Satisfied.

  • 22、Levtzow volunteers as chairwoman for the Hunger Ministry of Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Westlake, Ohio.

Being chairwoman includes organizing food drives, finding and organizing volunteers, known as“Hunger Warriors”, gathering donations(捐赠), and raising money. While the group does not track the amount of food donated, Levtzow guesses that the “Hunger Warriors” together raise an additional $48, 000 to $60, 000 per year for hunger organizations. Over the years, the Hunger Ministry of Saint Paul’s has raised more than $1.5 million.

I recently spoke with Levtzow about her experience as lead volunteer. She has held her present volunteer position for the past 26 years.

“We don’t have as many people,” she said. “Right now, I need drivers.” Drivers pick up local bread donations every morning from stores and local restaurants. They also deliver food and money to the centers that serve people in need.

Levtzow said that her group can always use a little more help than they have. They contribute food, money, and other donations to 24 groups. Their greatest one is with Redeemer Crisis Center in Cleveland.

Helping others was a part of everyday life for Levtzow when she was growing up. Her mother was director of nursing at a nursing home near the family’s home. Levtzow and her brother, John, volunteered there as teens. “Volunteering,” Levtzow said, “was just a normal part of life.” Levtzow’s family continues to volunteer. Her brother helps her with the Hunger Ministry. Even the family dog, Chico, attends events and is known as “the Hunger Dog”.

Levtzow plans to continue giving back for as long as she can. She encourages people of all ages to volunteer in whatever way they can. “The best advice I have is that for every friend you make, you should try and see what you can do to help them,” Levtzow said.

Levtzow hopes that younger generations will continue her work. “The biggest challenge is keeping it going,” she said.

【1】What do the figures in paragraph 2 show?

A.The cost of organizing food drives.

B.The worth of the donated food.

C.The awards the “Hunger Warriors” got.

D.The amount of the collected money.

【2】What problem does Levtzow face now?

    A.She is short of hands.

    B.She needs food donations.

C.She is too old to be chairwoman.

D.She has difficulty balancing work and life.

【3】Why does the author mention Levtzow’s family in paragraph 6?

A.To introduce a few more hunger organizations.

B.To talk about the history of a nursing home.

C.To add some information about Levtzow.

D.To introduce a new topic for discussion.

【4】What is Levtzow probably worried about?

A.So many people are still in trouble.

B.Her work might stop in the future.

C.Her present work is too heavy.

    D.Younger generations are selfish.

  • 23、Every winter, huge crowds come to the parking lots of big box stores. Not crazy shoppers... but crows (乌鸦)

“Sometimes there’re 4,010,00 even 20,000 birds,” says Andrea Townsend, a behavioral ecologist at Hamilton College.” They’re really conspicuous. What they like are urban areas, so you’ll see them in trees, on rooftops, certainly, in well-lit parking lots. They’re their favorite places.”

Crows are known as “partial migrants (候鸟)”. Every year, some members of the population migrate between breeding (繁殖) grounds and overwintering grounds. But others just stay put. So Townsend and her colleagues wanted to know if that urge to migrate was something individual crows can turn on and off. With no previous studies to refer to, they caught 18 crows from overwintering spots to find out. They fitted the birds with little backpack satellite devices after collecting blood and feather samples, keeping recording where they went during winter for years.

Overall, three quarters of the birds migrated, an average of 300 miles. And more importantly, if they migrated once, they did it every year—suggesting traveling is not a habit they switch on and off. The researchers also found migrating crows returned faithfully to the same breeding grounds every year—but were more flexible on where to overwinter, which could be a good thing.

“Birds with flexible strategies can change their behavior when the environment changes, while other birds are more locked into their overwintering sites. They may not be able to adjust so quickly or easily to changing environmental conditions.” Townsend also wanted to know how migration is connected with their mental ability and whether it’s a mental trade-off for the birds—since migrants have to remember all location data.

“Maybe they’re not as good at solving problems as a resident bird that doesn’t have to invest so much in that long-term memory.” Then again, with all that time on the wing, migrants simply may not have as much free time to think hard about problems.

【1】What does the underlined word “conspicuous” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Dangerous.

    B.Smart.

    C.Annoying.

    D.Noticeable.

【2】How did the researchers get their finding?

    A.By analyzing previous research.

    B.By tracking some crows’ movements.

C.By studying crows in urban areas.

    D.By comparing different migrating crows.

【3】What does paragraph 4 focus on?

    A.Crows’ migratory habits.

    B.Reasons for crows migrating.

    C.Crows’ behavioral changes.

    D.Ways of crows overwintering.

    【4】What might Townsend study next?

A.Problem-solving skill and memory of crows.

B.Impact of the changing environment on crows.

C.Relation between crows’ migration and mind.

D.Differences between migrants and resident birds.

  • 24、I was running late. My wife, Eleanor, and I had agreed to meet at the restaurant at seven o’clock, and it was already half past. I had a good excuse: A client meeting had run over, and I’d wasted no time getting to the dinner as quickly as possible. 【1】

She answered, “You never mean to be late.” Uh-oh, she was mad.

“Sorry,” I replied. “It was unavoidable.” I told her about the client meeting. Not only did my explanation not soothe her, it seemed to make things worse. And that started to make me angry.

Several weeks later, when I described the situation to a friend who is a professor of family therapy, Ken Hardy, he smiled. “You made a classic mistake,” he told me. “You’re stuck in your perspective,” he said. “You didn’t mean to be late. But that’s not the point. The point—and what’s important in your communication—is how your lateness affected Eleanor.”

【2】 She and I were having two different conversations. In the end, we both felt unacknowledged, misunderstood, and angry. The more I thought about what Ken had said, the more I recognized that this battle—intention vs. consequences—was the root cause of so much interpersonal conflict. As it turns out, it’s not the thought that counts or even the action that counts. That’s because the other person doesn’t experience your thought or your action. He or she experiences the consequences of your action.

When you’ve done something that upsets someone—no matter who’s right—always start the conversation by acknowledging how your actions affected the other person. 【3】 What if you don’t think the other person is justified in feeling the way he or she does? It doesn’t matter. You’re striving for understanding, not for agreement.

What I should have said to Eleanor is “I see that you’re angry. I’m sorry you’ve been waiting for me for 30 minutes. And it’s not the first time. It must seem that I think being with a client gives me permission to be late. That’s got to be frustrating.” 【4】 That’s because the reason I’m explaining my intentions is to repair the relationship. But I’ve already accomplished that by empathizing with her experience.

A.At that point, we are both ready to move on.

B.When I arrived at the restaurant, I apologized and told my wife I didn’t mean to be late.

C.In other words, I was focused on my intention, while Eleanor was focused on the consequences.

D.After really understanding the consequences of my lateness on her, I’ve managed to be on time a lot more frequently.

E.Save the discussion about your intentions for later. Much later. Maybe never. Because in the end, your intentions don’t matter much.

F.What I have found is that once I’ve expressed my understanding of the consequences, there is no need for me to explain my intentions.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I had stopped at the Swindon services (服务区) while on my way back to London. As I drove up the slip road, I spotted a man with a backpack and his thumb (拇指) out. I pulled over and lowered the window.

“Which way are you heading?” I asked. “I’m going back to London.”

“Ah, that would be grand,”     came his immediate reply. He opened the door and lifted his backpack on to the back seat. “I’m Brendan,” he said with an easy smile and a rich Irish (爱尔兰) tongue. “I was getting a bit desperate. I’ve had my thumb out for a day and half. Nobody seems to stop these days.”

“I haven’t eaten in days,” said Brendan. “I’m trying to get home.”

I’ve always enjoyed picking up hitchhikers. I used to be a motoring journalist and crossed the country in various test cars. Picking up a hiker always made me feel a little less guilty about all the miles I was doing.

As we headed east along the motorway, Brendan told me how he came to be waiting for a lift on that particular evening, and also about the two recent family tragedies (悲剧) that had ruined him and pushed him out of his old life and on to the road.

Brendan told me that he was 52. He laughed a lot and enjoyed his off-grid (不入网的) lifestyle. Until last week, that is, when he’d been mugged (抢劫).

“Three young men in Birmingham took my other pack and it had all my money in it. I’ve been sleeping out since then. I haven’t eaten in days. I’m hoping to get some casual work in London, so I can then get myself home to Ireland.”

It must have been the concept of home that got me, and helping a man who’d clearly had a tough time seemed like the right thing to do.
