  • 21、They just can’t help it! My theory is that the female brain is mainly built for empathy— the ability to understand other people — and that the male brain is mainly built for building systems. 【1】 For example, women are more likely to read magazines on fashion and parenting, while men will choose magazines that are mainly about computers and sports.

You may think that these preferences are influenced by the way people are taught to behave when they are growing up. However, this is not the case. A new study carried out at the University of Cambridge shows that newborn girls look longer at a face, and newborn boys look longer at a mobile. 【2】 It has also been observed that girls are better at noticing signs of changes in other people’s feelings. Boys, however, seem to enjoy building toy towers and playing with toys which have clear functions. 【3】 People whose jobs are in the construction (建设) industries are almost males. Maths and engineering, which require high levels of systems thinking, are also male-chosen disciplines (准则). Why do men and women have differences? Actually women have four times as many brain neurons (神经元) that connect the right and left part of their brains. Because of it, women have the better ability to multitask than men. 【4】 Men tend to focus on a limited number of problems at a time. They will separate themselves from problems and view tasks as independent from one another.

Some people may worry that I am suggesting one gender (性别) is better than the other, but this is not the case. My theory says that males and females differ in the kinds of things that they find easy, but that both genders have their strengths and weaknesses. 【5】 It is not true. The study simply looks at males and females as two groups, and asks what differences exist, and why they are there.

A.Generally speaking, there are clear differences.

B.You can see the same kind of pattern in the adult workplace.

C.Their preferences for building systems may change over time.

D.They will consider many sources of information at the same time.

E.That suggests certain differences between male and female brains are biological.

F.It is important to stress that the female brain may be built more for empathy.

G.Others may think the theory creates a belief of what a particular type of person is like.

  • 22、Perfectionists believe that not only is perfection achievable, but that it should be achieved whenever possible. They always try to make their work better, and often get pleasure from investing time and effort in their projects. They enjoy paying attention to detail and are often hard to please. After all, perfectionists almost always have nearlyimpossible standards for themselves, much higher than what outside parties would generally hope for.

Most perfectionists are also highlyorganized. They've perfected their work process along with everything else in their life. They have processes and patterns for handling almost anything that comes their way, from email to new projects and clients to bookkeeping. It can definitely add up to a more effective workday with less wasted time and effort.

Perfectionists can be thought of as overbearing(霸道的) by those who don't share their attitude. It can also be upsetting to clients who aren't interested in “perfect” and simply want their project done yesterday. When you strive for perfection, everything takes just a bit longer to get right. Even if you have a more efficient design and development process than many other designers, it is likely that you spend more time on each step than a lot of others do.

While most people who call themselves “perfectionists” do so in a lighthearted or positive manner, there are those out there to whom perfection becomes an obsession(痴迷). They consider anything less than perfect completely unacceptable. This can lead to obsessive behavior and can have damaging effects on their overall quality of life. Just feeling good about a job done to the best of your ability is entirely normal for a perfectionists and isn't something to worry about. But it becomes particularly dangerous when perfectionists feel they are never quite able to attain perfection, and so drive themselves crazy trying to always reach this unattainable goal.

These perfectionists often place their entire selfworth on their accomplishments and ability to reach perfection, and since they're never able to reach it, it creates a very negative selfimage and low selfesteem or depression. The good news is that there are trained psychologists who can help those who are nervously obsessed with perfection to overcome their obsession.

【1】Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of perfectionists?

    A. They enjoy investing time and efforts.

    B. They are not easy to satisfy.

    C. They have special ways of handling emails.

    D. They set high requirements for others.

【2】Clients who are not satisfied with perfectionists think they need ________.

    A. better coworkers B. bigger achievements

    C. higher efficiency D. less organization skills

【3】To perfectionists, their obsession with perfection is an act of ________.

    A. showing psychological sickness

    B. realizing their own value

    C. wasting time and energy

    D. improving their selfimage

【4】Which of the following will the author probably agree?

    A. It's very normal to always do one's best in life.

    B. Perfectionists should seek help as soon as possible.

    C. Perfectionists should not be too proud of themselves.

    D. People should not pursue perfection too much.

  • 23、One winter, my cousin and I were playing toy blocks in the yard. My mom was out for shopping to get groceries and my dad was asleep upstairs in his room. Suddenly, it started to snow. First it was just a little. But then it started to pour heavily.

Then, we put the finishing touches to our blocks and headed back inside. Right when I opened the sliding glass door, my cousin fell down on the slippery wooden stairs. I let go of the door, my worst mistake, you see. The door locks automatically but I had put a rock, right next to the door so it wouldn’t close. But while I was running to my cousin’s aid I’d accidentally kicked the rock.

Now, my cousin and I were locked outside. And unfortunately it started to get really windy. It was really freezing with the snow. First we started to call my dad, but he was sleeping soundly. I mean, slept through a tornado soundly. It was of no use.

Then I tried to climb over the fence but it didn’t work because the fence was iced by snow and wind, and the fence is six feet high. So, I climbed up to my tree house and brainstormed some ideas on ways to get in. At one point, I was seriously considering jumping out of the tree house and using the trampoline (蹦床) to jump over the fence.

So, we got to work. First, I took out the trampoline. Then I started to jump. First try — I almost cracked my head. Second try — this time I convinced my cousin to do it but at the last second, he chickened_out. Third try — I jumped and missed but at the last second, my hand caught the fence, and with a lot of pushing I finally climbed over the fence and luckily, I fell on a big snowdrift.

Then I got inside and unlocked the door for my cousin to get in. Finally, my mom came back. Then we shared this story with my mom and dad.

1When the author wanted to jump in, the main problem was that________.

    A. the fence was icy

    B. the fence was slippery and high

    C. the trampoline couldn’t bear the weight

    D. the trampoline was too small

2The attitude of the author’s cousin towards jumping on the trampoline seems________.

    A. passive   B. positive

    C. indifferent   D. objective

3The words “chickened out” (Paragraph 5) most probably mean “________”.

    A. fell down   B. cried out

    C. jumped up   D. backed out

4Which would be the best title of the text?

    A. Climbing over the Fence in the Snow

    B. An Adventure in the Yard

    C. Friendship Produces Pleasure

    D. We Are Independent

It does not come as a surprise that Dubai has a growing problem with “tragic”. The local rulers have explored all the conventional ways to get traffic moving again, including higher prices for parking, fuel and insurance. But at a recent conference in Hamburg, Hussain Lootah said that the city may adopt a more strict approach: setting an income level for vehicle ownership.

Mr Lootah’s approach is unlikely to be copied widely, but mayors of other big cities around the world are starting to think about taking severe actions of their own, including complete car bans in inner cities. But the efforts may not be enough to reduce traffic and pollution. The problems will only get worse: the number of vehicles sold globally each year will grow from around 80 million today to more than 100 million by the end of the decade, according to IHS Automotive.

There are already a handful of car-free communities around the world. But these are typically small and often tourist destinations that seek to create a throwback(后退;返祖遗传) in time, such as Sark Island, in the English Channel. The largest car-free urban area is probably Venice, where it is impossible to build roads and bridges to link the more than 100 small islands the city sits on.

Yet pedestrian malls(步行街) and other car-free zones keep popping up in cities around the world. Some cities are considering ways to limit central city access to “green” machines, such as battery-electric vehicles. Hamburg is perhaps the furthest along.

Such extreme plans may fly in a city such as Hamburg. But in many other cities the political resistance even to less far-reaching measures is hard to overcome. Michael Bloomberg, New York’s former mayor, tried twice to introduce a jam charge for much of Manhattan, but his plans were rejected by state lawmakers.

【1】 From Paragraph 1, we know that ________.

    A. Dubai government tries to improve its local incomes

    B. Dubai government tries to solve traffic problems

    C. Dubai government tries to reduce prices for parking

    D. Dubai government tries to offer insurance to locals

【2】 It is still hard to reduce traffic problems, because ________.

    A. Mr Lootah’s approach will be copied widely.

    B. mayors take gentle measures toward them.

    C. more vehicles will be sold globally each year.

    D. complete car bans in inner cities are not made.

【3】What causes Venice to be the largest car-free urban area?

    A. Its natural geographical characteristics.

    B. Its too many tourist destinations.

    C. Its reduced number of cars.

    D. Its government law on car free.

【4】What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

    A. People can only walk in central city.

    B. All vehicles can be used in central city.

    C. Hamburg may not adopt “green” machines.

    D. “Green” machines can be accessible in central city.
