二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   As we grow old, we realize that we have so little time to read and there are so many great books that we’ve yet to get around to, Yet re-readers are everywhere around us. For certain fans, re-reading The Lord of the Rings is a conventional practice annually. One friend told me that Jane Austen’s Emma can still surprise him, despite his having read it over 50 times.

New sudden clear understandings can be gained from the process of re-reading. Journalist Rebecca Mead, a long-time Englishwoman in New York, first came across George Eliot’s Middlemarch at 17. Since then, she has read it again every five years. With each re-reading, it has opened up further; in each chapter of her life, it has resonated(引起共鸣) differently. Mead evidenced the large number of ways in which really good books not only stand the test of repeat reads, but also offer fresh gifts each time we crack their spines. These kinds of books grow with us.

Scientists have also recognized the mental health benefits of re-reading. Research conducted with readers in the US found that on our first reading, we are concerned with the “what” and the “why”. Second time round, we’re able to better appreciate the emotions that the plot continues to express. As researcher Cristel Russell of the American University explained, returning to a book “brings new or renewed appreciation of both the great book and its readers.”

It’s true that we often find former selves on the pages of old books (if we’re fond of making notes on the pages). These texts can carry us back to a time and place, and remind us of the kind of person that we were then. We’re changed not only by lived experience but also by read experience-by the books that we’ve discovered since last reading the one in our hand.

More so than the movie director or the musician, the writer calls upon our imaginations, using words to lead us to picture this declaration of love or that unfaithfulness in life. A book is a joint project between writers and readers, and we must pour so much of ourselves into reading that our own life story can become connected with the story in the book.

Perhaps what’s really strange is that we don’t re-read more often. After all, we watch our favourite films again and we wouldn’t think of listening to an album only once. We treasure messy old paintings as objects, yet of all art forms, literature alone is a largely one-time delight. A book, of course, takes up more time, but as Mead confirms, the rewards make it adequately worthwhile.

1The two books are mentioned in Paragraph 1 mainly to ________.

    A.attract the attention of readers

B.introduce the topic of the passage

    C.provide some background information

    D.show the similarity between re-readers

2The underlined expression “crack their spines” in Paragraph 2 refers to ________.

    A.recite them B.re-read them

    C.recall them D.retell them

3It can be learned from paragraphs 3 and 4 that _________.

A.reading benefits people both mentally and physically

B.readers mainly focus on feelings on their first reading

C.we know ourselves better through re-reading experience

D.we will change writers by reading the books

4The writer indicates in paragraph 5 that _________.

A.reading is an interaction between writers and readers

B.writers inspire less imaginations than film directors do

C.writers describe the story by using pictures

D.reading calls for readers’ little attention

5The writing purpose of the passage is to ________.

A.call on different understandings of re-reading old books

B.argue against the mental health benefits of re-reading

C.bring awareness to the significance of re-reading

D.introduce the effective ways of re-reading old books

  • 22、When I was a boy there were no smart phones, and our television only got one channel clearly. Still, I was never bored. The fields, hills, and woodlands around my home were the perfect playground. I can remember once hiking to a nearby lake. At the backside of it I was amazed to find an old dirt road that I had never seen before. It was full of muddy tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure.

I walked on and on for hours. I was sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ear “Turn around and head back home”, but I was stubborn, so I walked on. There was still neither a car nor a house in sight. I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scared. I didn’t want to end up trapped on this road,   and I was worried that it would be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again.

I continued to walk on with something growing inside of me. My heart was pounding and my legs were aching. I was almost in tears when I turned one last curve and saw something in the distance.   It was a house that I recognized. I jumped up and down and laughed out loud.   It was still over a mile away,   but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house in no time. I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner.

I remembered this recently when I saw a sign that said “All roads lead home”. It is true. In life,   all roads,   no matter how they twist and turn,   can lead us home again. What is important,   though,   is how we travel them.   Are we going to go forth in fear or are we going to go forth in faith? Are we going to make this life a terrible trip or are we going to make this life a joyful journey? The choice is ours.

  • 23、An anti-obesity program for Australian girls didn’t lead to any improvements in their diet, physical activities or body weight a year later, according to a new report.

Findings from the school-based intervention (介入), which involved exercise sessions and nutrition workshops for lower-income girls, are the latest disappointment in a lot of research attempting to head off adult obesity and the disease risks that come with it.

Especially during the middle- and high-school years, girls’ physical activity reduces obviously, according to lead researcher David Lubans, from the University of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. He said, “In the future we need to make the programs more interesting and exciting and present information in a way that is meaningful to adolescent girl.”

Lubans and his workmates conducted their study in 12 schools in low-income areas of New South Wales. At the start of the study, girls in both groups weighed an average of close to 130 pounds, with about four in ten considered overweight. Over the next year, adolescents in the intervention group were given pedometers (计步器) to encourage walking and running and invited to nutrition workshops and regular exercise sessions during the school day and at lunchtime. Participation in some of those activities were less than ideal. For example, the girls went to only one-quarter of lunchtime exercise sessions, and less than one in ten completed at-home physical activity or nutrition challenges, the researchers reported. At the end of the year, girls in both groups had gained a similar amount of weight and there was no difference in their average body fat.

Preventive medicine researcher Robert Klesges said that although some anti-obesity programs have helped adults lose weight, the teen population has always been a source of failure for researchers. “The common belief is: nothing works,” he said. “And we have got to get beyond that.”

“We need to think outside the box,” said Klesges, who wasn’t involved in the new study. “That could include learning from what has worked in adult studies, such as giving meal replacement drinks or prepared foods to teens who have trouble making changes to their diet. Or, it could mean using a “step-care” method — rather than researchers or their doctor telling them to keep doing the same thing.” Klesges said.

【1】The underlined words “head off” in Paragraph 2 can best be replaced by “________”.

    A.damage

    B.defend

    C.prevent

    D.affect

【2】The methods used in the program to stop obesity don’t include ________.

    A.walking and running

    B.inviting them to nutrition workshops

    C.joining exercise sessions regularly

    D.giving meal replacement drinks

【3】The main reason for the failure of the anti-obesity program is probably that ________.

A.the participants didn’t take an active part in it

B.the program was not interesting and exciting to participants

C.the participants didn’t get extra nutrition or exercise help

D.the program didn’t pay attention to healthy exercise

【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.As researchers, it is important to have creative research methods.

B.Researchers need to give meals or prepare foods to participants.

C.Teen girls have no difficulty in making changes to their diet.

D.Some ant-obesity programs have not helped adults lose weight.

  • 24、What do you usually do to comfort your friends when they are sad? You probably pat them on the shoulder, or give them a warm hug.

We used to think that knowing when and how to comfort others was an ability that only humans have. But scientists have discovered that apes (猩猩) have this ability too.

Two researchers from Emory University in Atlanta, US, went to an Ape Protection Centre in Congo to study bonobos (倭黑猩猩), which are closely related to humans.

The researchers analyzed the bonobos’ reactions (反应) after more than 370 cases of stressful situations, such as fights and losing temper, and found that some bonobos rushed to hug those that were screaming after being attacked, just like humans would have done.

However, researchers found that not all bonobos were able to comfort others. In the protection center, many bonobos are orphans whose mothers were killed by hunters. They were found to be more worried in times of tension and have greater difficulty controlling their own emotions, making them worse at reaching out to help friends in need.

“Orphans, who have not had the benefit of a mother helping them handling their emotions, are much worse at comforting others,” Professor Frans de Waal told The Telegraph. “Bonobos with moms were able to curb their negative emotional reactions more quickly. Therefore, they pay more attention to others.”

This pattern mirrors the way that human children have been found to react. Those who are good at handling their own emotions—for example, those who can calm themselves down more quickly after upsetting experiences—are usually better at expressing their concerns for others.

1The 5th paragraph is mainly developed by________.

    A. making comparisons   B. following time order

    C. giving examples   D. presenting causes and effects

2The underlined word “curb” in the 6th paragraph probably means“________”.

    A. express   B. watch

    C. hide   D. control

3Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. Orphan bonobos never give a hand to friends.

    B. There were 370 bonobos in the research.

    C. Moms play an important role in dealing with kids’ emotions.

    D. Only human beings have the ability to comfort others.

4What’s the main purpose of this passage?

    A. To provide better protection for Apes.

    B. To inform readers of a new study.

    C. To uncover the mystery of Apes.

    D. To compare human behaviors with Apes’.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Lungs nearly bursting, I struggled to lift my head out of the water. Inch by inch, my tired body reached for the end of the pool.

Earlier that week, I had turned in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified, I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide, those sorts of things. I was competent for more.

So a swim test was required, establishing the mere fact that I was not completely helpless in a pool. Midway through, the manager administering the test remarked. “This looks really easy for you. Why aren’t you applying to become a guard? ”

“The thought hadn’t crossed my mind.”

“Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is complete a certification class. ”Inside I was unsure of myself, but his words inspired me — You never know what you are competent to do until you force yourself to do it. Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid, CPR (心肺复苏), and procedures for different land and water-based emergencies.

Work started soon. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and attained seemed unnecessary.

Today appeared to be another uneventful (平静无事) day. However, shortly after the other guards signaled to the children to exit the pool, I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others had climbed up.
