  • 24、Birthday Traditions in Different Countries

England  Certain symbolic objects are mixed into the birthday cake as it’s being prepared. If your piece of cake has a coin in it, then you will be rich. Also, when it’s your birthday, your friends give you the “bumps”. They lift you in the air by your hands and feet and raise you up and down to the floor; one for each year you lived, then another one or two for luck.

Denmark  A flag is flown outside a window to show that someone who lives in that house is having a birthday. Presents are placed around the child’s bed while he/she is sleeping, so he/she will see them at once upon awakening.

Holland Special year birthdays such as 5, 10, 15, 20, 21 are called “crown” years. The birthday child receives an especially large gift on a crown year birthday. The family also decorates the birthday child’s chair at the dining room table with flowers, paper streamers and balloons.

Canada  The birthday child’s nose is greased (涂抹) with butter for good luck. The greased nose makes the child too slippery for bad luck to catch him/her. In some parts of Canada, the birthday person even receives a punch (一拳) for each year he/she is alive and then one for good luck.

Brazil The birthday child receives a pull on the ear for each year he/she has been alive. The birthday person also gives the first piece of cake to his/her most special friend or relative, usually mom or dad.

Korea   There is a big family party on the first birthday. The table is set with food, and four items: a pencil, a ruler, thread, and money. The item that the baby chooses is said to forecast his/her future: excellent student, good with hands, long life or riches.

South Africa On the twenty-first birthday, a key made of anything from paper to silver to gold is presented by the parents as a sign that the child is ready to unlock the door to their future.

  • 25、   More college students find it a rich experience to help people in developing countries during holidays.

Zhao Yuti, a 21-year-old student, went to Siem Reap, Cambodia on Aug. 19 to teach English voluntarily for one week in a school. Such voluntary work has become a popular choice for college students. The experience was great for Zhao as he immersed (沉浸) himself in a new country. What touched Zhao most was the children’s need for knowledge.

“I felt I was needed and would like to let them know more,” he said.

The summer holidays provide chances for Chinese college students to travel or do internships. Voluntary work has become more popular among students, especially in low-income (低收入) countries.

Zhao enjoyed his time there and experienced a different culture. One young girl stayed in his memory because she had an angelic smile. He called her “the temple girl”, and every day when she came to class, Zhao said that he was won over by her beautiful smile.

Zhao came back to school in early September and continued to finish his study. “My heart has become stronger since I came back from Cambodia,” he said.

“I hope to look for more chances for voluntary work in more countries when I am still young.”

A.To tell us that kind people are everywhere.

B.To help us have more great experiences.

C.To introduce some voluntary work to college students.

D.To tell us voluntary work is popular with college students.

  • 26、This is a tale of two friends ---one is blind, the other has no arms. On their own, the two are “disabled”. But together, they are a powerful team that has changed part of their village in North China’s Hebei Province into a rich, green forest. Meet 53-year-old Jia Haixia and Jia Wenqi!

Their story began in 2000, when Haixia, who was already blind in his right eye, lost his left one after an illness. Wenqi lost his arms in an accident when he was just three. Neither could find a job, so the two decided to team up. They rented some poor land and began to plant trees. In return, the local officials paid them a small fee. Haixia and Wenqi never imagined that they would end up creating an environmental paradise. Their forest now has over 10,000 trees, hundreds of birds and many other wild animals. In addition, it saves the village from river flooding during the rainy season. When the friends work together, they focus on their strengths not their disabilities. Their day begins at 7 a.m. when the sightless Haixia carries Wenqi across the river to get to their worksite. Since they cannot afford to buy young trees to plant, the two use branches from existing trees. Haixia climbs to the tree-top and with Wenqi’s direction, selects the perfect branch. He then digs a hole and carefully plants it. Finally Wenqi waters the area. )

Though hard-working, the men don’t make much money. But as Wenqi puts it, “We stand on our own feet, so the fruits of our work taste sweeter.”

Neither Haixia nor Wenqi cares about money. Together, they already have everything they need --- a perfect pair of eyes, two strong hands, and the best friendship in the world!

    A. Haixia needed someone to help him.

    B. They both needed a way to make money.

    C. They wanted to improve the environment.

    D. They were required to do so by local offcials.

    A. They are easy to get.

    B. They do not cost money.

    C. They can grow very quickly.

    D. They are preferred by animals.

【4】In paragraph 5, when Wenqi says “We stand on our own feet, so the fruits of our work taste sweeter”, he means that “________”.

    A. they hope to make the forest even better

    B. the fruits from their trees are very sweet

    C. they are proud not to depend on others

  • 27、   In Germany there are different kinds of high schools. Some prepare students for workers, others prepare them for college. All schools are great places for making friends and learning German.

Most high schools in Germany begin at about 8:00 a.m. and end at about 3:30 p.m. This means your morning will be busy with classes. You will have time to do homework and take part in private clubs after school.

Most students take public transport to school or ride a bicycle. Some areas have school buses. It is not common for parents to drive students to school.

In Germany, teachers and students’ relationship is more formal than you might be used to. Teachers are respected and students must use the formal “Sie (德语 )” when talking to teachers.

In many countries, schools offer official sports and after-school activities. This is less common in Germany. After-school activities are usually organized through private clubs. There are clubs for things like soccer, dance, theatre and almost everything else. Once you are in Germany, walk around at school and talk to other students to find out what private clubs are in your area and meet your interest.

Each of Germany’s 16 states has its own slightly different school systems. The school system in Brandenburg will be a little different from the system in Bavaria for example. Where you live, your knowledge level and your age will decide what school you can attend.

1What do the students do after school in Germany?

A.Talk with friend. B.Do the housework.

    C.Take a part-time job. D.Take part in private clubs.

2Why must students use the formal “Sie” when talking to teachers?

A.To get a good mark. B.To show their respect.

C.To make teachers happy. D.To attract teachers’ attention.

3How can you find out what private clubs are in your area?

A.By looking at the posters. B.By asking the teachers.

C.By talking to others. D.By visiting the offices.

4Which can affect you to decide what school to attend?

    A.Your knowledge. B.Your birthplace. C.Your parents. D.Your experience.

5What’s the best title for the passage?

A.Life in Germany B.Different School Systems

    C.Private Clubs D.Schools in Germany
