二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The moon and its possible influence over human behaviors have been objects of tales for centuries. Although the full moon can't turn people into werewolves (狼人), some people do blame it for causing a bad night's sleep or discomfort.

To find out if lunar phases (月相) affected humans, an international group of researchers studied children to see if their sleeping patterns changed or if there were any differences in their daily activities. The research studied a total of 5, 812 children from five continents. Data collection took place over 28 months, which is the same as the number of lunar cycles. These were then divided into three lunar phases: full moon, half-moon and new moon.

The findings of the study indicated that in general, sleep duration around full moon reported an average decrease of five minutes compared to new moon. “Our study provides evidence that the moon doesn't seem to influence people's behaviors,” said Dr. Jean-Philippe Chaput from the Eastern Ontario Research Institute. The only significant finding was one percent sleep decrease in full moon. However, sleeping for five minutes less time during a full moon is not a danger to health. “Our behaviors are largely influenced by many other factors like genes, education and income,” he added.

“Folk tales and even certain examples suggest that behaviors of humans and animals are affected by lunar phases,” Dr. Chaput explained. “Whether there is science behind it or not, the moon secret will continue to attract human civilizations in the years to come.”

1Where does the moon's bad influence on human behaviors usually come from?

    A.Tales. B.Textbooks. C.News reports. D.Scientific papers.

2Why did the research last 28 months ?

A.To attract more attention. B.To cover the lunar cycles.

C.To look into more children. D.To collect as much data as possible.

3What can be concluded from the findings ?

A.We should go to bed five minutes earlier during a full moon.

B.The moon is a major cause to affect our sleep and behaviors.

C.We shouldn't worry about the moon's influence over health.

D.The moon plays a significant role in children's sleeping patterns.

4How does Dr. Chaput feel about the topic of the moon influence?

    A.It's boring. B.It's worrying C.It's frightening . D.It's interesting.

  • 22、Shi Wenlan said the only thing that interests her is dealing with smelly centuries-old books. “I don’t want to drink, I don’t want to eat or move. I like sitting alone under the warm lights, mending holes and cutting pages. I’m a boring person, but I’m doing an interesting thing, ” she said. In the past 26 years, the 51-year-old restorer of ancient books at the Hunan Library in Changsha, capital of Hunan province, has brought about 100,000 pages of ancient books back to life. Her work helps to ensure that ancient knowledge can be read and appreciated by people today. Shi has great faith in her little- known job. “Ancient books are precious documents and important achievements of Chinese civilization. To restore them is to rescue cultural relics that are dying out, ” she said.

Books age and decay(腐烂)over time. Though technology, such as accurately controlled temperatures and humidity levels, can be used to slow the process, a number of old books are on the edge of withering away forever, experts said. At the Hunan Library alone, a third of its 680,000 ancient books are in urgent need of restoration, which means each of its eight restorers needs to complete 3,000 pages a year, said Liu Xueping, director of the library’s special collection department. More young restorers must be trained to promote the production of ancient books, so human civilization can be preserved despite the damage of time, experts said.

In recent years, the government has attached great importance to the restoration of ancient books and has put forward many policies to encourage more people to take up the work. The number of restorers has now reached about 1,000. They have better educational backgrounds and receive more systematic training, as well as better salaries and higher social status, Shi said.

【1】Which of the following best describes a book restorer’s job?

    A.Boring.

    B.Well-paid.

    C.Demanding.

    A.Falling.

    B.Reducing.

    C.Weakening.

    D.Disappearing.

A.It is important to restore books.

    B.Restorers will receive better education.

    C.Restorers are receiving more attention.

D.It will be easier to be a restorer in the future.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    A.Human Civilization Can Be Preserved

B.Ancient Books Have Been Brought Back to Life

C.Ancient Books Are in Urgent Need of Restoration

D.Restorers Preserve Ancient Books for Descendants

  • 23、On January 1st “gaming disorder”— in which games are played compulsively, despite causing harm — gains recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO), as the newest edition of its diagnostic manual (手册) comes into force. A few months ago China, the world’s biggest gaming market, announced new rules limiting children to just a single hour of play a day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and none the rest of the week.

Are games really addictive? Psychologists are split. The case for the defence is that this is just another moral panic. Killjoys of yore issued similarly dire warnings about television, rock roll, jazz, comic books, novels and even crossword puzzles. As the newest form of mass media, gaming is merely enduring its own time in the stocks before it eventually ceases to be controversial. Furthermore, defenders argue, the criteria used to diagnose gaming addiction are too loose. Obsessive gaming, they suggest, is as likely to be a symptom (of depression, say) as a disorder in its own right.

The prosecution (质疑方) retorts that, unlike rock bands or novelists, games developers have both the motive and the means to engineer their products to make them irresistible. The motive arises from a business-model shift. In the old days games were bought for a one-off, upfront cost. These days, many use a “originally-free” model, in which the game is free and money is made from purchases of in-game goods. That ties playtime directly to revenue.

Smart phones and modern consoles (主机) use their permanent internet connections to funnel gameplay data back to developers. That allows products to be constantly fine-tuned and tweaked to boost spending. The industry is even beginning to use the argot of the gambling business. The biggest spenders are known as “whales”— a term that originated in casinos.

While psychologists argue the finer points of what exactly counts as addiction, and whether gaming’s design tricks cross the line, the industry should recognize that, in the real world, it has a problem, and that problem is growing. Now that gaming addiction comes with an official WHO code, diagnoses will become more common. Clinics are already reporting booming business, as lockdown have given gamers more time to spend with their hobby.

    【1】What is paragragh1 mainly about?

A.The origin of gaming disorder and China’s proposal.

B.The symptom of gaming disorder and corresponding harms.

C.The definition of gaming disorder and China’s measure.

D.The effect of WTO’s diagnose and China’s pushing force.

【2】Which of the following will the prosecution probably agree with?

A.Whether the criteria to diagnose gaming addiction are loose remains debatable.

B.Games developers are motivated to consider spenders’ experiences as priorities.

C.The biggest investors in playing games are to blame for developers’ business tricks.

D.Contemporary techniques serve as platforms for developers to stimulate spending.

【3】What is the author’s attitude conveyed in the last paragraph?

    A.Ambiguous and skeptical.

    B.Considerate and objective.

    C.Far-sighted and authoritative.

    D.Strong-minded and optimistic.

  • 24、For four lonely years, Evelyn Jones of Rockford, Illinois, lived friendless and forgotten in one room of a cheap hotel. “I wasn’t sick, but I was acting sick,” the 78-year-old widow says, “Every day was the same. I would just lie on my bed and maybe cook up some soup.” Then, six months ago, she was invited to The Brighter Side -- Rockford’s day care center for the elderly. Every weekday morning since then, she has left her home to meet nine other old people in a church for a rich program of charity work, trips, games, and -- most important of all -- friendly companionship.

Just a few years ago, there were few choices for the elderly between a normal life in their own homes and being totally confined in nursing homes. Many of them were sent to rest homes long before they needed full-time care. Others like Mrs. Jones were left to take care of themselves. But in 1971, the White House Conference on Aging called for the development of alternatives to care in nursing homes for old people, and since then, government-supported day-care programs like The Brighter Side have been developed in most big American cities.

“This represents a real alternative to the feared institution and makes old people believe they have not left the world of living”, says Alice Brophy, 64, director of New York City’s Office for the Aging, “They do well at the centers, and I hate it when people describe us as elderly playpens.” New York’s 138 centers encourage continuing contact for the aged with the community’s life. The centers serve more than 15,000 members, and volunteer workers are always looking for new ones. If someone doesn’t show up at the center for several days in a row, a worker at the center calls to make sure all is well. And although participation in the center is free, those who want to can pay for their lunches.

No normal studies have been made of these centers for the elderly, but government officials are enthusiastic. In the future, the Public Health Service will do a study to decide if the programs can receive federal Medicare money. And the old people themselves are very happy with the programs. “There is no way”, says Evelyn Jones, smiling at her new companions at the Brighter Side, “that I will ever go back to spending my day with all those loses at the hotel.”
