21、My name is Michelle Rogers. For most of my life I had been fighting with my body weight. I was either gaining weight or trying to lose it. I wasn’t happy with myself, and I certainly wasn’t able to fully enjoy life. Not only did I feel bad physically, but I felt terrible emotionally. I also knew I wasn’t able to be the best I could be, and with failure after failure in losing weight, I just felt so hopeless to make it.
One day in 2008, I was looking through ads online and saw a treadmill (跑步机) for $100. This time I decided to start small and keep it doable. The first week I started walking 15 minutes on the treadmill at a fixed time every day. The next week I did 16 minutes. Each week I added a minute. Gradually, I increased speed as well as time. Once I got to 30 minutes, the weight started dropping off.
I didn’t lose weight at first, but I didn’t give up like I did in the past. I realized I started feeling better. My legs were getting stronger. I didn’t feel painful like I used to when I got up from my desk. All the efforts I’d been putting into fitness made me want to start eating healthier, too. I began with small changes as well. After these years I started listening to my body. It was refusing food and habits that were bad for me.
Today, the extra weight is gone. I still exercise every morning. I look and feel the best I have never done. Every area of my life has improved and benefited from this change in me. Not only do I have my youthful energy, looks and health back, but also I have more confidence than I have ever had.

22、Few languages are so connected with their written from Chinese. Just the mention of the language calls to mind a complex, beautiful and—to outsiders—mysterious writing system. The Chinese themselves are extraordinarily proud of it.
Without doubt, thought, it is hard. Its characters are usually constructed (构建) by smaller pieces, and learning to write them is always a huge challenge, even thou the pieces might help us guess the meaning and pronunciation of a character.
To make character-learning easier, a committee created new roman-letter transcription (标注) of Chinese called Pinyin in 1955. Regular use of Pinyin was once uncommon for most Chinese people, but these days it is popular: it is important for day-to-day interaction with computers. People use it to write on keyboards and smartphones, entering the spelling and choosing the right character from a menu of homophones (同音词). Other systems use the keys to combine the pieces of a Chinese character, but it is much more difficult to learn.
International use of Chinese has not grown at the pace of China’s economy. The difficulty of learning the written language is undoubtedly one reason why. The difficulties of using it on a computer are another. It is hard to imagine two foreigners writing to each other in Chinese as many do in English.
That might one day change as technology is becoming more helpful. Today, AI (artificial intelligence) has made inputting characters easier. From surrounding words, new systems can guess which Chinese character a user wants. People have seen computer’s much-improved recognition of their handwriting. And speech-to-text software has advanced for every language, meaning that fewer users even need to touch a keyboard to “write” Chinese.
With modern technology, you no longer need the great memory of a scholar to learn Chinese—a blessing for foreign learners as well as natives. Though unlikely to take the place of English. Chinese may begin to have a more powerful global role.

23、They say procrastination (拖延) is the thief of time, but actually deadlines are. New research has found that if you want someone to help you out with something, it is best not to set a deadline at all. But if you do set a deadline, make it short.
Professor Stephen Knowles tested the effect of deadline length on task completion for their research. Participants were invited to complete an online survey concerning a charity donation. They were given either one week, one month, or no deadline to respond. Professor Knowles says although the topic of the survey was about charity, the results are true of any situation where someone asks another person for help.
The study found responses to the survey were lowest for the one-month deadline and highest when no deadline was specified. No deadline and the one-week deadline led to many early responses, while a long deadline appeared to give people permission to procrastinate, and then forget. Professor Knowles wasn’t surprised to find that specifying a shorter deadline increased the chances of receiving a response compared to a longer deadline. However, he did find it interesting that they received the most responses when no deadline was specified.
“We interpret this as evidence that specifying a longer deadline, as opposed to a short deadline or no deadline at all, removes the urgency to act,” he says. “People therefore put off undertaking the task, and since they are inattentive or forget, postponing it results in lower response rates.”
He says of the research that it is possible that not specifying a deadline might still have led participants to assume that there is an unspoken deadline. Professor Knowles hopes his research can help reduce the amount of procrastinating people do. “Many people procrastinate. They have the best intentions of helping someone out, but just do not get around to doing it.”
【1】Why did Professor Knowles do the research?
A.To find out whether people are interested in charity.
B.To study the role a deadline plays in procrastination.
C.To test the effect of procrastination on task completion.
D.To attract public attention to the effects of procrastination.
【2】Why do people procrastinate when given a long deadline?
A.They oppose the deadline.
B.They are unwilling to act.
C.They lack a sense of urgency.
D.They are too busy to remember.

A.Procrastination—the Thief of Time

24、I’m rather good at using maps. But I forgot the maps and here we were, late afternoon, last day of vacation, my daughter, my cousin and I, driving along a two-lane highway in Oregon. No other car in sight, and the sun had just gone down. Where was that sweet little village?
It was supposed to be right along this river. We drove on, farther into the unknown, river always at left as our guide. We kept passing farms and fields and now a few lights were coming out. In my head, I was doing a lot of self-criticisms: Why didn't we start earlier, bring the map and on and on? My cousin and I were both impatient and stressed. My daughter, at least, was happy in the back seat, text messaging a friend. I pulled up on the shoulder of the road to think.
Just then-WOW! Amazing! A new scene had appeared. Where did it come from?
Right there, out of nowhere: a magical misty landscape. Fields stretched in silent purples, with rows of tall trees, darkening in the dusk (黄昏). I turned the car engine off. All was silent in the hot summer air. Beside us, a plum-colored river hardly moved between a border of trees, its dark lazy water reflecting the last light of day.
How breathtaking! Where had it been? If I had seen even a bit of this beauty while driving along, I could have stopped and taken a look. I had missed it all.
We miss a lot, almost everything, in fact, in our world. Our task-focused filters (过滤器) take care of that, selecting only what we need. We need to get to work. Have some lunch. We see what we need to see, often for purposes of survival. Gregory Bateson, speaking of beauty, said the judgment is selection of a fact. In our daily lives, who or what is doing the selecting? Can we make a change? Can we see further?

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
At Piedmont School, everyone wanted to be on the soccer team. Laura had dreamed of earning glory for the Falcons ever since she had witnessed her older brother scoring the winning goal. On the day she joined the team, she felt like she could fly.
Unfortunately, her joy did not last long. She spent most of the matches on the bench. Walking to the car after the last game, Laura’s mother asked if she was feeling fine. Laura kept quiet and tried to smile at her mother. Having spent yet another game as a reserve, Laura had not even broken a sweat. Laura also joked that she would have baked in the hot sun if she had played. Her mother assured her that she would have another chance to play. She also cheered Laura on. Laura could only shake her head as she climbed into the seat, back hunched and face down.
A few days later, Laura’s mother found she sprawled on the couch, watching music videos on her phone, so she tried asking Laura to watch soccer videos instead. Laura looked at her mother blankly, rolling her eyes. “They won’t help me and I can’t get better by myself,” Laura said.
Sighing, her mother sank down on the couch. “Laura, for every lock, there is a key. We just have to find it. What if I film you practicing to help you find ways to improve?”
“But the season’s over, Mum. No more practice, remember?” Laura said. Her mother looked at her resolutely and insisted that the best players keep practicing even when the season is over. Laura protested, “But to practice plays, I would need at least one other person to join me! It is difficult to do that alone.”
Laura’s mother patted her and said, “We’ll find that key too, but we have to start somewhere.” While Laura’s mother was searching her wallet for her gold key, she smiled gently at Laura. She gave Laura an assuring no d before passing her the key. “This key is a reminder for you to be strong and not give up. Let’s build something tomorrow.” Laura’s mother said.
