21、Still Miles to Go
My husband Tom came with a huge grin on his face. He held his arms wide and announced his retirement after working for the Postal Service for thirty-three years. But as time went by, I could tell that Tom had nothing to do at home. He began to pace like a lion, glancing out the windows.
“I think I’ll look for a part-time job,” Tom informed me one day. I felt instant relief. The lion would cease circling, and I could be in peace. We kept our eyes open for job opportunities. A few days later, when our car crept behind a school bus, I remarked “You could drive that bus.” He had driven us over the mountain s through rainstorms on winding roads. Behind the wheel, he seemed fearless. “Of course, I could drive that bus,” he answered back. “But could I drive it with forty-five children bouncing and yelling in the back?” We both laughed at the thought.
That bus became the bumblebee (大黄蜂) that buzzed around me. I pictured Tom happily going off to work again, climbing behind the wheel and setting off on his daily route. My enthusiasm must have attracted Tom because I overheard him on the phone with the transportation department. He was hired.
The very next morning, he was given a bus and a route sheet. Driving the bus turned out rewarding, and Tom is blooming in his new role. I think he likes being the “big guy” on the road.
He is now “Mr. Tom” to his riders and their parents. I hear he is quite amazing. When the pre-K children climb aboard, he fastens the safety belt for them. He greets the children with high-fives. Then he leads them in a quick and fun activity, where they get to shout after hours spent in their quiet classroom. “Goodbye, teachers!” yells Mr. Tom. The little ones repeat it. “Goodbye, school!” Again, they repeat, joyfully. Mr. Tom then yells out the last two lines, and the children laugh and repeat at the top of their lungs.
He has been driving the bus for seven years and has gotten lots of thank-notes from grateful parents. Sometimes, while a school bus passes me, it always warms my heart when the driver is the one I’m hoping to see and I catch the kiss he blows me.

22、Conflict is an unavoidable part of life. So how can we save meaningful relationships after a fight with our loved ones? 【1】 If you are currently struggling to seek forgiveness, consider these crucial steps to apologize effectively.
Say the words. After hours of quarreling, many people struggle to summon up the courage to say “I am sorry.” To some it is almost equal to admitting defeat, and no one likes to lose. 【2】 Instead, they may buy flowers or offer a back rub, convinced that surely this must be enough. But is it? Words are actually quite useful.
【3】 It is easy to think you are the victim in a fight. We tend to minimize our own errors while exaggerating the mistakes of others. This is the way we rationalize (合理化) our actions in conflicts. Simply put, we make excuses. But if earning forgiveness is your ultimate goal, then attempt to be less defensive the next time you find yourself in a fight. Stop making excuses for yourself and your behavior and own up to your actions.
Ask for the chance to make up or pay for your mistakes. This gesture is even more effective if it comes at some personal cost to you. So pay for that broken window with your allowance, buy your sister a new pair of headphones after a quarrel, or offer to help your partner with extra housework after arguments. 【4】
Apologies do work, but be mindful that how you apologize also matters. 【5】 When you need more than it, extra work is needed to develop the relationship, like seeking professional advice from experts.
A.Take responsibility for your own wrongdoing.
B.One critical way is by learning how to apologize.
C.Many people try to avoid uttering those little words.
D.Second, real actions should come after sweet words.
E.It’s necessary to remember to avoid financial losses in a fight.
F.In the end, you will be further along in the forgiveness process.
G.And sometimes an apology is not enough to repair a relationship.
23、Lonely? You’re hardly alone. Since COVID-19 struck, few teens have been able to spend as much time at school or with friends as they used to. But even before the COVID-19, loneliness was becoming a growing problem for teens. And the trend (趋势) appears throughout industrial nations across the world. That ’s the finding of a new study.
In America, the share of lonely teens jumped from 18 percent in 2012 to 37 percent in 2018. Overall, during those years, the share of girls reporting loneliness basically doubled in the countries studied. The increase in boys was somewhat smaller.
The new study connected rising loneliness to a greater use of smartphones and the Internet. Jean Twenge works at San Diego State University. He and his team found that since 2012, U. S. teens have been spending less time together face-to-face. So this increase in loneliness started long before the COVID-19 made such meet-ups unsafe.
“Smartphones can help us connect with friends,” says Twenge. “But they can also make us feel excluded.” Girls, especially, may feel this way. One reason may be that they post more photos than boys. Studies have shown that if those images don’t get many“likes”, it can affect a teen’s mental (精神的) health. And then there’s “phubbing”. It’s that moment in which a friend or a family member takes out a phone and plays with it, ignoring (忽略) everybody else.
The new study mainly refers to a survey called the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). Some one million teenage students from 37 countries took this survey in 2000, 2003, 2012, 2015 and 2018. Its questions mostly dealt with education. But they also included six statements about loneliness, such as, “I feel awkward and out of place in my school.” The good news: Even in 2018, most teens around the world still felt liked and included at school. But the fact that so many were reporting loneliness is a worrisome trend.
【1】What’s a finding of the new study?
A.People struggle with COVID-19.
B.More girls than boys suffer loneliness.
C.Teens are eager to connect with friends.
D.There are more girls than boys in the U. S.
【2】What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.What leads to friends’ ignorance.
B.What benefits girls’ mental health.

A.To explain the problems teens face.

24、Walking through an airport is never easy. Now imagine doing it if you were blind. That’s the challenge faced by Chieko Asakawa, a computer scientist. Asakawa often flies between the US and Japan. If traveling alone, she has to be helped at both ends of the flight, which sometimes includes endless waiting. In order to search for a better way, Asakawa has invented a high-tech suitcase that helps get her to the destination with no risk and without difficulty.
Packed with cameras and sensors, the suitcase uses artificial intelligence to map the environment around it. A mobile phone app is used to design a computer program of a destination into the suitcase, which plans a route and directs the user through vibrations(震动) in its handle. The suitcase also features facial recognition technology, which can inform the user if a friend is nearby. It can also flag shops and other places of interest nearby and direct the user to them if necessary.
As a keen runner, Asakawa had Olympic dreams as a child, but a swimming accident at age 11 caused her to gradually lose her sight. As an adult she is already thinking about developing accessibility technology. “I never relax when I travel alone,” she says. “I always think about what technology will help me travel more easily, quicker and more comfortably.” It was this restlessness that led to the AI suitcase.
The suitcase has other applications and could be used to help visually impaired people navigate(导航) cities, while its object-recognition technology can be used to identify colors—useful when buying clothes. Perhaps its best benefit is that it allows users to devote mental energy to other things. With AI providing space awareness, a blind person can do many other things: take a call or listen to the birds. Public spaces become places to be enjoyed, not just navigated. “It will open up many doors for blind people, because we’d be able to go anywhere by ourselves,” says Asakawa. The technology will naturally develop, she predicts, as components(组件) become smaller, lighter and more powerful.
Without new technology, we wouldn’t change our society. A smart suitcase is a great showcase for how AI and technology can change the lives of people with visual disabilities.
【1】Why did Asaka invent robot suitcase?
A.To offer help to the blind.
B.To make her journey safe and easy.

D.To search for the charm of technology.
【2】What is used to program a destination into the suitcase?

【3】What’s the greatest advantage of the robot suitcase?
A.It can guide ways for users.
B.It allows users to enjoy their life.
C.It can help users recognize colors.
D.It permits users to devote mental energy to other things.
