25、October 16 is World Food Day. The UN started the day in 1979. It is used to remind people not to waste food and fight hunger (饥饿).
Food shortage (匮乏) is a big problem around the world. Right now, there are more than 1 billion (10亿) hungry people in the world. Many children go to sleep with hunger, and 15 million of them die because of hunger each year.
There are several reasons why there are food shortages. First, there have been more droughts (干旱) and floods (洪涝) recently. This is bad for farmers and hurts their ability to grow food. Also, a growing population makes it more difficult to feed everyone. Another big reason is food waste. Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away every day. Sometimes we cook too much, or we don’t use it before it goes bad. The average (平均的) person throws away 50 kg of food every year, More than one third of all food produced goes to waste around the world each year according to the UN. That is1.3 billion tons of food being wasted.
If the wasted food was saved, it could feed lots of people. The amount of food wasted in Europe could feed 200 million people, and the food wasted in Latin America (拉丁美洲) could feed 300 million people.
As teenagers, we should think twice next time we want to throw away extra (额外的) food on our own plate. By cutting down on food waste, we could also help put food on the empty plates of some hungry children.

26、Tony and Jane give their opinions about keeping pet dogs.
Keeping pet dogs is a good idea, says Tony I think people should be allowed to keep pet dogs. There are lots of reasons for this. First, dogs are really cute. It’s nice to pick them up and hold them in our arms, and it’s wonderful to see them growing up quickly. Second, your dog might not be dangerous but by simply barking he can keep away a burglar who might think of entering your house. Finally, we can also learn about life and death from dogs. Young people can learn how to care for others and how to respect all living things by keeping a pet dog. I think keeping pet dogs is something everyone can enjoy. | Keeping pet dogs is not a good idea, say Jane In my opinion, it is never a good idea to keep a pet dog. Firstly, pet dogs create a lot of mess. They leave fur and hair on the floor, on beds and on sofas, and they need to be washed daily. Secondly, we should remember that not all dogs are friendly. Some dogs bark at people they do not know. A few dogs bark all night. This stops their neighbors from getting any sleep. A small number of pet dogs even bite people. Lastly, you have to make sure pet dogs are in good health and provided with good pet products. Paying for dog food and seeing the vet when dogs are ill can be expensive. I believe that people should not keep pet dogs. |

27、 Recently, I was invited to watch my students’ cross—country meet (越野赛). At first, I didn’t know if I should go because I was not a sports fan of any kind and my job had nothing to do with sports. Although many people might say they wouldn’t exactly consider the cross—country a sport, I would disagree. The cross—country beginners have to work out and exercise just like you do for any other sports.
I never knew how much fun I would have watching a group of my students run for fun. Whether they ran fast or slow, they still tried their best to complete the game. They kept going no matter how tired they were.
It was wonderful to see how encouraging the audience ( 观 众 ) was to runners everywhere. It wasn’ t just their runners that they would cheer for. It was all runners, fast or slow. When the kids heard the audience cheering them on, or even just clapping (鼓掌) to encourage them, they would run faster and faster in search of the finish line; it was just so cool to watch.
I am proud of each one of my students who ran yesterday. They did a wonderful job. I surely want to supports cross—country meet later. I’m not talking about coaching it or anything like that, but just to support them by going to their meets.
