二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Whether you know it, other people are always reading your body language for secret clues about you.

    Crossed arms

Others may read crossed arms to mean you’re distant, or stubborn, according to Barbara and Allen Peases. 【1】. Driver, author of the bestseller You Can’t Lie to Me, points out this pose can make someone better at sticking to a difficult task, and more likely to solve hard math questions.

    【2】

If you want your body language to show you’re listening, make eye contact. But limit it. When you give more than 80 percent, the person you re communicating with will feel uncomfortable.

    Crossed legs

If you sit with your legs crossed, ankle over knee, you’re confident, says Driver. Crossing your legs at the ankles while seated can mean you’re holding back, uncertain, or fearful. 【3】. According to Peases, men voted this their favorite position for seated women.

Standing with hands on hips (髋)

You might think the “Superman pose” shows off your confident side, but Driver says this posture can often come off as aggressive. 【4】. Even putting just one hand on your hip can give off a sense of threatening, say Peases.

    Reaching for a handshake

【5】. At first, people would hold onto each other’s forearms, and now we reach for just the palm (手掌) of someone’s hand. Handshakes are a sign of trust and welcome, so reaching first means that you believe you’re welcomed and they are happy to meet you.

    A.Eye contact

    B.Body language

C.But crossed arms have their pluses, too

D.It might just mean they’re trying to come up with an answer

E.And ladies, if you want to appeal to a man, cross your legs at the knees

F.The custom of shaking someone’s hand goes as far back as the Ancient Romans

G.That’s because you’re taking up more space, preventing others from getting by you

  • 22、   “When you fall, get up again” is a lesson every parent hopes their child will learn. But no one could have showed this better than Bailey Matthews from Nottinghamshire, England. Despite having cerebral palsy, a condition that limits body movement and muscle development, the 8-year-old crossed the finish line at a triathlon (铁人三项赛) without his walker last Saturday.

Diagnosed (诊断) with cerebral palsy at 18 months, Bailey became interested in taking on a triathlon when his dad, Jonathan Matthews, started pushing him around a 5-km course at a weekly park run event. Jonathan then adapted a walking frame, so Bailey, who needs regular physical treatment to help with his mobility, could get round the course himself. Soon after, Bailey expressed his wish to take on a triathlon and began training on a special bike and swimming in a lake.

Although he tripped and fell a few times, he immediately picked himself back up and made it to the end, with his father rolling the walker behind him. The most inspiring moment came after he had already completed a 100-meter swim, a 4,000-meter bike ride, and a 1,300-meter run. He discarded his specially-adapted walking frame to finish the last 20 meters of the race unaided, bringing the crowd to tears. Hundreds of audience cheered Bailey on to the finish line, but his biggest fans were most definitely his parents.

“He has always struggled with things that parents of other children take for granted, but he never lets it bother him. He doesn’t see himself as different to anyone else. If he wants to do something, he will find a way to do it, even if it is not the conventional way. We have always tried to make sure that if there is something he wants to do, there is no such word as CAN’T”, says his mother, Julie Hardcastle.

1What do we know about Bailey Matthews?

A.He was the best student in Nottinghamshire.

B.He fully recovered after he took part in a triathlon.

C.He was encouraged by his doctor to become a triathlon.

D.He finished a triathlon regardless of physical restrictions.

2Which of the following best explains “discarded” underlined in Paragraph 3?

    A.Relied on. B.Threw away.

    C.Tore down. D.Fixed up.

3How does Julie Hardcastle feel about her son?

A.She is proud. B.She is grateful.

C.She is sympathetic. D.She is disappointed.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Parents’ Love

    B.Strong Family Ties

    C.An Inspiring Triathlon Finish

    D.A Lonely Struggle Against Misfortune

  • 23、   Back in Brisbane, Australia, for the Christmas break, I found myself in a public transport dead zone. Bikeless, 7 kilometers from where I was meeting friends and unwilling to get a taxi, I decided to borrow an electric scooter. The trip took far longer than it would have by bike, mainly because of a major spill halfway there. A rock, hit at speed, is a terrible thing: weeks later, I still had the red knees of a primary schooler.

E-scooters have appeared in Brisbane like a rash. In the UK, they are legal only on private land, but the Department for Transport is discussing how to regulate them on public roads and pathways, with the potential for legalisation later this year.

Other cities that have e-scooter rental programs have had teething problems. In Paris, mayor Anne Hidalgo described the situation last year as messy. She has announced that the city is reducing its number of e-scooters to 15,000 and plans to create laws banning them from pavements (人行道). France has put into force laws limiting e-scooter speeds to 25 kilometres per hour.

Similar to dockless (无桩的) hire bicycles, e-scooters are parked on pavements and people leave them up trees or throw them into rivers. Rough handling shortens their lifetime, which is bad for both profitability and the environment. Analysis suggests that the average e-scooter’s lifetime is just three months.

I think e-scooters are an essential part of the effort to make city transport greener. They are seen as a solution to the “last mile” problem — a potential way to reduce transport jam by rapidly getting someone to their final destination. Cars can take up 28 times the space of a person riding a bicycle.

As far as the environmental effect goes, recent research suggests that e-scooters are not as green as walking or cycling, but they are still better than cars. And despite numerous reports of serious accidents, scooting is about as safe as cycling.

Stephen Gossling at Lund University in Sweden has suggested we build car-free “micromobility” streets, where cyclists, pedestrians (行人) and e-scooters could share the road. He thinks this will reduce accident risks and invite more vulnerable (易受伤害的) traffic participants, such as children, to become active transport users.

If more e-scooters mean fewer cars on roads, an improvement in local air quality is also a likely outcome. When 20 kilometers of roads in central London closed for World Car-Free Day last September, a temporary air quality monitor in Regent Street reportedly registered a 60% drop in nitrogen dioxide.

1What does the underlined part “a major spill” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A.A serious fall. B.A sudden illness.

C.A legal defense. D.A terrible breakdown.

2What do we know about e-scooters in Paris?

A.They are illegal on pavements. B.They are already out of fashion.

C.They are facing more restrictions. D.They are more common on private land.

    3What is the author’s opinion of e-scooters?

A.They are not as safe as cycling.

B.They stand up to rough handling.

C.They are as green as cycling or walking.

D.They play a big role in the “last mile” problem.

    4What is Stephen Gossling’s suggestion?

A.To set up more care-free days.

B.To invite more cyclists to use e-scooters.

C.To get vulnerable pedestrians off the road.

D.To separate cars from e-scooters on the road.

  • 24、I first came to Berwickshire for a job-to be the Ranger for the Berwickshire Marine Reserve.I was then Senior Ranger for St Abb’s Head National Nature Reserve and I set up my own business, In Our Nature, offering wildlife journeys, walks, talks and courses in 2020. There’s so much I love about Berwickshire. Its stunning scenery. Its variety of landscapes and habitats and range of amazing wildlife, both above and below the water. Its friendly people. In places you can feel like you are a million miles from anywhere, when in reality you’re just an hour’s drive from Edinburgh.

The thing that supports everything on the Berwickshire Coast is its varied and fascinating geology(地质).The jewel in the crown is Siccar Point. With its world-famous non-conformity(均变),it’s considered the birthplace of modern geology. The geology not only shapes the landscape, but it also impacts on the wildlife, forming varied habitats from steep sheltered valleys and towering cliffs to sheltered sandy bays.

There’s nothing I like more than being out in nature and sharing my passion with others, so starting up In Our Nature was a no brainer. In the warmer months I offer tours on land and sea to help folk enjoy the amazing wildlife and scenery of the Berwickshire Coast. In the darker months my online courses help people learn about wildlife in the hope that it will increase their enjoyment of the marine and coastal environments they spend time in.

My favourite spot on the Berwickshire Coast has got to be a place called Petticowick. The views up the coast and inland to the Mire Loch are second to none. It’s a place where you can marvel at geology which covers unimaginable periods of time. You can listen to and watch thousands of seabirds that return to the cliffs to breed each spring. Or witness all the amazing activity of the breeding seal colony on the beach below during the early winter.

【1】Why did the author go to Berwickshire?

    A.To do sightseeing.

    B.To make friends.

    C.To work in a reserve.

    D.To study wildlife.

【2】What do the underlined words “The jewel in the crown" mean?

    A.The highest part.

    B.The most attractive part.

    C.The valueless part.

    D.The advanced part.

【3】How does the author help people get to know wildlife in darker months?

    A.By providing online courses.

    B.By sharing her experiences.

    C.By offering tours on land.

D.By organizing trips to the sea.

【4】What can we learn from the text?

    A.Modern geology needs further study.

    B.Petticowick should be well preserved.

C.People should not take advantage of nature.

D.The author is enthusiastic about Berwickshire.
