English book Animal Farm (1945) tells a story about farm animals. They are fed up with (受够了) Mr Jones, the farmer. He treats them badly, so they decide to kick him off the farm and run the farm themselves.
One day an old pig called Old Major gathers the animals around him. He tells them that all animals should stand together. He says they should take over the farm. They say that all animals are equal.
After they get rid of (摆脱) Mr Jones, two pigs become the leaders of Animal Farm. One pig called Snowball is a great speaker. He has big ideas for Animal Farm. The other leader is a pig called Napoleon. Napoleon is a crafty (狡猾的) animal. He brings together supporters by offering them advantages.
Napoleon makes a war against Snowball and kicks him away from the farm. He turns Snowball into a big enemy. He says that Snowball is working with Farmer Jones and other farmers to do harm to Animal Farm.
But as it turns out it is Napoleon who is working with the enemies of the animals. He joins up with the old human enemies of the animals. But he tells the animals that he is working for them. At the same time the animals work hard. It seems that it is as bad to live under Napoleon as it was under Farmer Jones!
Why is the story so important?
Animal Farm is an excellent choice for learners of English because it’s very short. The language is also simple.
Like many famous stories Animal Farm is not just a book. It was played on the BBC radio in 1947. The big modern way of telling stories is in movies of course. Orwell’s book has become a film twice. Perhaps it won’t surprise you that the first one (1954) was a cartoon. In 1984 another film was made. This was a live-action (真人版的) film. The famous book has also been put on in the theater. In 1984 a play was made and it toured a number of British cities.

27、Among various programs, TV talk shows have covered all space on daytime television. But no two shows are more opposite, while at the same time standing out above the rest, are the Jerry Springer and Oprah Winfrey shows.
Jerry Springer could easily be considered the king of "rubbish talk". The topics on his show are as surprising as can be. For example, the show takes the ever-common talk show titles of love, sex, cheating, and hate, to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer show is about the dark side of society, yet people are willing to eat up the troubles of other people's lives.
Like Jerry Springer, Oprah Winfrey takes the TV talk show to its top. But Oprah goes in the opposite direction. The show is mainly about the improvement of society and different quality of life. Topics are from teaching your children lessons, managing your work week, to getting to know your neighbors.
Compared to Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being poured into society. Jerry ends every show with a "final word". He makes a small speech about the general idea of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn something very valuable.
Clean as it is, the Oprah show is not for everyone. The show's main audience are middle-class Americans. Most of the people have the time, money and ability to deal with life's tough problems.
Jerry Springer, on the other hand, has more of a connection with the young adults of society. These are people around 20 years old whose main troubles in life include love, relationship, sex , money and drugs. They are the ones who see some value and lessons to be learned throung the talk shows.
【1】Compared with other TV talk shows, both the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey shows are ________.
A. more interesting B. unusually popular
C. more detailed D. more formal
【2】Though the social problems Jerry Springer talks about appear unpleasant, people who watch the shows ________.
A. show disbelief in them B. are ready to face the problems
C. remain cold to them D. are willing to get away from them
【3】Which of the following is likely to be a topic of the Oprah Winfrey show?
A. A new type of robot. B. National hatred (憎恨).
C. Family income planning. D. Street accident.
【4】We can learn from the passage that the two talk shows _________________.
A. have become the only one of its kind B. shows the weakness in human nature
C. appear at different times of the day D. attract different people
28、I often hear some students say English is difficult, and it gives them a headache. But English is very easy for me. I’m good at it. I’m very glad 【1】 (tell) you something about how I study English. First, I think an interest in English is very important. When I learned English first, it was fresh for me. I was interested in it, so I worked hard at it and soon 【2】 (get) a very good mark. How happy I was! After that, I learned English harder and harder. And I also have a good habit: whenever I have a question, I must make it clear by 【3】 (ask) our teacher.
Second, I think English is a foreign language. I should learn it well. I often 【4】(listen) to the teacher carefully, speak bravely, read aloud and have a good vocabulary. Then practice again and again, never be tired. I think English 【5】 (learn) well, because it is useful. Besides this, I often read English stories, jokes and easy novels. They help me 【6】 (understand ) a lot of things. So to do more reading is an important way to learn English well.
I 【7】 (study)for almost three years. English has become a close friend of mine. I hope each of you will learn English well.
