四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、I made a decision on the way down to the vacation beach cottage to meet my family. For two weeks, I would try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs, ands or buts.

The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was reading a Biblical about husbands’ being thoughtful of their wives. Then he went on to say, “Love is an act of will. A person can choose to love.” To myself, I had to say that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change.

And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Mary at the door and said, “That new yellow sweater looks great on you.”

“Oh, Tom, you noticed,” she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little confused(困惑). After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Mary suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, but then I thought, “Mary’s been here with the kid all week and now she wants to be alone with me.” We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites.

So it went. Two weeks of not calling the company where I am a manager, and a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that is how the whole vacation passed. I made a new decision to keep on remembering to choose love.

There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Mary and I still laugh about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Mary looked at me with the saddest expression.

“What’s the matter?” I asked her.

“Tom,” she said in a voice filled with sadness, “Do you know something I don’t …”

    “What do you mean? ”

“Well…that checkup I had several weeks ago…our doctor…did he tell you something about me? Tom, you’ve been so good to me…am I dying?”

It took a moment for it all to sink in. Then I couldn’t help laughing.

“No, honey,” I said, holding her in my arms. “You’re not dying; I’m just starting to live.”

1In the first paragraph, “No ifs, ands or buts” probably mean ____________.

    A. probably   B. completely   C. impossibly   D. unimportantly

2From the story we may infer that Tom drove to the beach cottage ____________.

    A. alone   B. with his family   C. with Mary   D. with his children

3During the two weeks on the beach, Tom showed more love to his wife because _____.

    A. the doctor told him Mary was seriously ill

    B. she looked beautiful in her new clothes

    C. he made up his mind to be a good husband

    D. he made a lot of money as a manager

4What made Tom change his mind to be with his family more?

    A. His wife’s illness.   B. His vacation to the beach.

    C. A talk on his car radio.   D. His achievement from his job.

5By saying “I am just starting to live,” Tom means that ____________.

    A. he is beginning to feel sorry for what he did to his wife before

    B. he lived an unhappy life before and is now starting to change

    C. he is just beginning to understand the real meaning of life

    D. he is just beginning to enjoy life as a loving husband

  • 25、   The novel coronavirus (新冠病毒) made this year’s Spring Festival holiday very different for most of us.

Many places in China began a first-level emergency (突发事件) response to the virus (病毒) in mid-January, calling for people to stay at home. Following these rules, most people gave up family gatherings (聚会) during the Spring Festival and canceled any festive celebrations.

Many shops are closed, delivery services (送货服务) are slow, and wearing masks (口罩) in public has become a must. But despite (尽管) the inconvenience, people are showing their understanding and cooperation (合作).

On Feb 3, Zhao Junyan, a Junior 2 student from Shanghai, brought 15000 masks from Indonesia back to China, People’s Daily reported. Zhao, while traveling in Jakarta, collected the masks with his uncle, who works in the city. The 15-year-old donated (捐赠) all of the masks to Cangnan, Zhejiang, his hometown.

“When a country is in trouble, everyone is responsible to help,” Zhao said to the media (媒体). “What I have done is what an ordinary (普通的) Chinese person can possibly do.”

  • 27、Are people less happy or happier when they get older? If your answer is "happier", then you are right, based on a study published five years ago. It found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age fifty. In fact, it found that by the age of eighty-five, people are happier with their life than they were at eighteen.

The findings came from a Gallup survey of more than three hundred and forty thousand adults in the United States in 2008. At that time, the people were between the ages of eighteen and eighty-five.

Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were the highest among adults between the ages of twenty-two and twenty-five. Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.

Levels of happiness were the highest among the kids and those in their early seventies.

The survey also found that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did.

So why would happiness increase with age? One theory is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.

Title: Relationship between Age and 1

    The elements of the survey

    Time: 2008

    Place: in the United States

Researcher: Arthur Stone and his 2

    Targets: 340,000 adults

    The 3 of the survey

Generally people become happier and feel 4 worried after age 50. By the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were at 18.

Adults between the ages of 22 and 25 have the 5 stress.

The kids and those in their early 6 feel the happiest.

Men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women feel sadder, more 7 and worried than men do.

    Conclusion

Happiness 8 with age. That’s because people become more thankful for what they have and control their emotions 9 as they get older. It also 10 them less time to think about bad experiences.
