If you are given only 1 yuan, could you live in a city for one day? It seems this may be a little difficult. But students from Xi' an made it.

On April 10, more than 60 students from the Middle School Attached to Northwestern Polytechnical University took part in the One Yuan Metropolis Survival. 1. Students not only had to live, but they also had to deal with a lot of hard tasks.

2.为了赚钱,无论走到哪里,许多学生努力找寻兼职工作。 In this way, they also saw how hard life was. Zhang Qiyue, 14, asked more than 10 restaurants for a job and finally got one chance. We were upset when they said no. But gradually, we got used to it, he said. After being a waiter for an hour, he got 25 yuan. 3.他们甚至通过在公园唱歌跳舞来赚钱。

Living was hard, but finishing the tasks wasn't any easier. 4. They went to different places to finish tasks in a short time. The most amazing one was when they had to exchange things worth thousands yuan with only a piece of paper in half an hour. "We learned how to persuade others. From a balloon to a cake to a bottle of yogurt... after almost 20 tries, we got an expensive necklace( )," he said. 5. They will give all of the money they made to poor schools in Tibet(西藏).

  • 24、   Joe moved to Canada with his family at the age of 41. There were many stressful days for them in the beginning. Since Joe had no job, the savings(存款) they brought with them were diminishing rapidly.

One day, Joe went out to look for a job. As he walked, he saw many things on the street that people threw away. Joe could not believe his eyes. “Why would people throw away such things?” he asked himself. Joe saw a “new” television and decided to take it home to see what the problem was.

Since he was 12 years old, Joe’s main hobby has been electronics(电子产品). As a teenage boy, he began to repair radios, TVs and so on.

Joe brought the television home and turned it on. There were pictures on the screen, but there was no sound. He opened the back cover. Before long, Joe found the problem. The loudspeaker(扬声器) was broken. He went out again. Among the garbage on the street, he found a toy piano. He carried the piano home. Luckily its loudspeaker worked. Fifteen minutes later, Joe had a TV with both pictures and sound.

  • 25、   Like all big cities, Paris has a traffic problem: lots of traffic jams and lots of pollution from exhaust fumes. So in 2007, the city began a scheme(计划) to improve the situation.

Under the Velib scheme(bicycle freedom), people can take a bicycle, use it for as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or another bicycle station. The first half-hour on the bike is free, but if you don’t return it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. But it’s only 1 euro a day or 29 euros a year! The bicycles are heavy (25 kilograms). They are all grey and have baskets. There are about 20,000 of them in the city, and around 1,450 bicycle stations. So there are a lot more Velib stations than the 298 metro stations!

Paris is not the first city to have a scheme like this — not even in France. Many years ago, Lyon started a free bicycle scheme. However, not everybody in Paris thinks it’s a great idea. One Parisian said, “These bicycles are only for short journeys. If people want to travel across the city, they won’t use a bicycle; they’ll still use their cars.”

A city spokesman said, “The bicycle scheme won’t solve all of our traffic problems, of course. But it might reduce pollution levels in the atmosphere. Traffic, together with factory fumes, is a big problem. Everyone knows about global warming. We know this is partly because rainforests are disappearing, but it’s also because there’s so much pollution in the world. We can help improve the situation right here. The Velib bikes might help people to lead a healthier life, too.”

“There aren’t any simple answers to traffic problems and pollution in cities,” the spokesman added. “But unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise. The problems in our environment will only get worse.”

1How did Paris improve the situation of its traffic problem?

A.It built many bicycle stations. B.It is renting heavy bicycles to visitors.

C.It sold more bicycles to people. D.It is providing shared bikes for people.

2How much will you have to pay if you use the bike for 45 minutes?

    A.29 euros. B.1.5 euros. C.1 euro. D.Nothing.

3According to the city spokesman, which of the following statements is true?

A.Traffic is not the only cause of global warming.

B.There aren’t any solutions to the city’s traffic problems.

C.Riding bikes is a perfect way to solve pollution problems.

D.It’s better to drive a car than to ride a bike to travel across the city.

4What of the following is NOT a way to deal with global warming?

A.Using bicycles often. B.Protecting the rainforests.

C.Reducing factory fumes. D.Traveling across a city by car.

5Which of the following may be a suitable title for the passage?

A.Traffic Jams in Paris B.Taking Action for the Environment

C.Bicycles and the Future D.The Advantages of the Velib Scheme

A.Paying with Smartphone. B.Paying with cash. C.Paying with cards

4What does the underlined word equity mean in the last paragraph?________

B.people need to be allowed to apply for bankcards.

C.many people think different payment types should be offered.

  • 27、It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly, my mother will push the conversation into World War III. She’ll talk about my lack of a bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, I don’t want to do any job related to science, either. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major(主修) in English and communications, she nearly had a heart attack.

“Why can’t you be like my co-worker’s son?” shebemoansall the time. Her co-worker’s son received a four-year scholarship and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I’ve seen my mother struggle to raise me on her small salary and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 a.m. and usually comes home around 5 p.m. or even 6 p.m. However, I want her to know that by becoming a doctor, it doesn’t mean I’ll be successful. I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future.

1Which of the following topics do the writer and his mother often talk about?

C.Dinner plans D.Wars around the world

2We can infer from Paragraph 1 that the writer’s mother ____________.

A.doesn’t want the writer to major in English

B.doesn’t think the writer should be a doctor

C.gets along very well with the writer

D.doesn’t think working in the science field is a good idea

3The underlined word “bemoans” in Paragraph 2 most probably means _____________.

    A.agrees B.shouts C.complains D.smiles

4Which of following statements is probably TRUE about the writer?

A.He wants to be like his mother’s co-worker’s son.

B.He wants to find a job in his community in the future.

    C.He doesn’t think his mother’s co-worker’s son is perfect.
