二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Researchers have long sought ways to design air conditioning systems that can work without such greenhouse gases as HFCS, but none has come close to being a direct replacement. A small Irish company, however, now claims (宣称) to have come up with an answer.

Exergyn, based in Dublin, has been working on a 60kw prototype (原型机) which not only avoids HFCS, but also has the benefit of having few moving parts. The system uses a material called a shape memory alloy. SMAS, as they are known for short, have the unusual ability to return to a predetermined shape when heated. The SMAS produce heat when their shapes are changed by compression (压缩), and then absorb it when the pressure is gone and they return to their original shapes.

Tony Ennis, Exergyn’s chairman, says this method of cooling is not only more environmentally friendly than an HFCS system, but will also be less expensive to buy and 30%~40% cheaper to run. It will be lighter and smaller, too. As for reliability, he says the prototype’s performance suggests the unit could operate for more than 40 years without a problem.

When Dr. O’Toole, an expert in memory materials, confounded Exergyn in 2012, his intention was to use the SMAS to create a system that would turn low grade waste heat into electricity. But the challenges presented by HFCS persuaded him that air conditioning would be a quicker way to bring the technology to market. Development is still continuing, but products may be only a few years away.

He has not given up his dream of producing electricity. He even wants to expand its application to other products, such as refrigerators and heat pumps to absorb heat from the ground for home heating. When time allows, Dr. O’Toole and his colleagues hope to get to work on those ideas, too.

    4. 【4】

  • 23、   What's safer? Using a numeric PIN code(数字密码)to unlock your smartphone or relying on a swipe(滑动)pattern? New research suggests that, at least when someone close by could be looking over your shoulder, you might be safer with an old-fashioned PIN.

The research by the United States Naval Academy and the University of Maryland tested what could best secure smartphones from so-called "shoulder surfing attacks". So, if you are worried about someone looking over your shoulder while you unlock your phone, would you be wiser to use a PIN or a pattern? According to this research at least, the answer to that question is pretty clear.

Those who have a single observation of your screen as you unlock it with a swipe pattern will be successful in knowing it 64.2% of the time. Security can be improved somewhat by removing lines on the pattern lock (35.3% success rate for shoulder surfers).

By comparison, the use of a six-digit PIN greatly reduces the chances for an attacker to determine how to unlock your smartphone, with just 10.8% of attacks being successful. In tests, viewers were able to determine the users' lock-screen patterns from up to six feet away, from a variety of different angles, even after a single viewing.

Indeed, when it comes to safety, past research has determined that an unlock pattern is about the same as a three-digit PIN -something I hope that none of us would rely upon.

The researchers' conclusion is that a PIN of six digits or more is the most secure de fence against shoulder surfing attacks, and while both types of pattern lock are poor, patterns without lines provide greater security.

Unsurprisingly, the research confirmed that phones with larger screens were found to provide less security against shoulder surfing attacks.

1What did the research focus on?

A.What lock-screen patterns people use. B.When shoulder surfing attacks occur.

C.Why people prefer numeric PIN codes. D.How you can unlock your phone safely.

2What do we learn about shoulder surfing attacks?

A.They can increase our screen time. B.They are a threat to our privacy.

C.They are a kind of physical attack. D.They can be done through remote control.

3Which of the following proves to be the safest?

    A.A six-digit PIN. B.A three-digit PIN.

C.A lock-screen pattern with lines. D.A lock-screen pattern without lines.

4What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?

A.Add some background information. B.Provide some advice for the readers.

C.Offer additional topic-related information. D.Summarize the previous paragraphs.

  • 24、The sun is going to expand into the orbit of Mercury according to scientific calculations, which will result in the entire Earth catching on fire. Who will save the world?

This imaginative tale is at the heart of the latest Chinese sci-fi movie The Wandering Earth. Unlike many American space-themed films where the solution to a disaster Earth faces is always fleeing (逃离) the planet in spaceships, this time we’re taking the Earth with us. The film, which has made it the country’s most successful film of all time, has offered a different and more ambitious idea.

The “ambition” didn’t come from nowhere. For thousands of years, “homeland” has had a soft spot in the hearts and minds of Chinese people. One old idiom that shows a strong feeling that Chinese people have had for their homeland is “luoyeguigen”, which means returning to one’s homeland in old age, like fallen leaves returning to the roots of their tree.

“What is Chinese sci-fi?” Guo Fan, the film’s director, said in an interview. “A vehicle that really expresses our cultural and spiritual core (核心) can be called Chinese sci-fi. Otherwise, we’re just following others and telling the same Hollywood stories. ”

And the makers of The Wandering Earth may have chosen the best time to tell its Chinese sci-fi story. The film was released on Feb 5,the first day of Chinese New Year. It was a time when many people had just made the hard journey back to their hometowns. So to them, there is only one possible way to tell the story: Earth goes wherever humans go, because it’s our home.

【1】The main purpose of the opening paragraph is to________.

A.give a brief account of the film

B.warn people of the coming threat

C.explore ways to avoid the disaster

D.introduce the topic of the passage

【2】The underlined phrase “a different and more ambitious idea” refers to________.

    A.fleeing the Earth in spaceships

    B.bringing in huge success

C.filling the gap in Chinese sci-fi movies

    D.helping Earth make its escape

【3】Which of the following is unlikely to account for the success of the film?

A.The rich imagination of the story.

    B.Hollywood-style space stories.

    C.The special cultural background.

D.The time chosen to release the film.

【4】What is likely to be title for the passage?

    A.Chinese Sci-fi Catches Up

    B.The Most Successful Chinese Sci-fi

    C.Chinese Sci-fi Sets a New Path

    D.Chinese Sci-fi Challenges
