24、 “Nothing will ever be the same again,” Ally said to herself.
Ally’s father died last summer. It wasn’t fair, Ally thought. Dad was young and had never been sick. Why had his heart suddenly stopped? Ally sank slowly into her father’s favorite chair and looked at his picture on the bookcase. Ally smiled. “I miss you, Dad,” she said softly.
She felt a hand smoothing her hair and looked up. “Why don’t you come outside with me, Ally?” her mother asked. “The birds are nesting(筑巢) in the woods. By this time last year you’d already taken dozens of pictures.”
But her mother must know birdwatching wouldn’t be the same this year. How could it be? Ally wondered. Ever since she could remember she and Dad had been a team, searching the woods for the special wood warbler. “I’ll be out in a while, I promise,” she answered.
After her mother left, Ally reached for the photo album she and Dad had put together. On the cover was a photo of a tiny orange bird with blue-gray wings and black eyes. Dad cut it from a local newspaper. Ally smiled, remembering the excited look on Dad’s face when he showed her the pretty bird.
“I can’t believe someone spotted(发现) this little guy way up here in New Jersey,” he said. “Wood warblers are usually found in the south, not this far north. I bet if we search real hard, Ally, we’ll see this little guy together someday.”
Ally closed her eyes. She loved thinking about the times she and Dad had spent searching the woods for the little bird. They’d never spotted the warbler, but her father had an amazing way of making each outing seem special. He was her best friend, and when they were together Ally felt comfortable, as she did when she had her favorite blue sweatshirt on. …

25、The word “chicken” is used in so many English idioms. Do you know the following?
Don’t count your chickens before they hatch The expression “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch” means “Don’t expect that all your eggs, which have been laid, will hatch.” “Hatch” is a verb, meaning the baby chicken breaks open the shell of the egg and comes out successfully. So the expression mainly means “Don’t depend on things working out just as you want them to.” this saying appears in the story The Milkmaid and Her Pail in Aesop’s Fables.
A chicken-and-egg situation
In history, philosophers(哲学家) and scientists have met this dilemma(困境): Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Aristotle thought that both the bird and the egg must have always been there. However, more recently, scientists such as Stephen Hawking have argued that the egg came before the chicken. In common speech, the term “a chicken-and-egg situation” means “a situation where it is impossible to say which of two things appeared first and which caused the other one.”
Don’t be such a chicken
There seems to be an idea in English, somehow, that a chicken is a scared bird. Maybe that’s not fair as most birds will probably fly away from you if you go towards them. But “Don’t be such a chicken” means “Don’t be so scared and get a bit more courage.” So if your friend to do something, you can say to him or her, “Don’t be such a chicken. Just have a try!”

A primary school bus driver stopped the bus in a gas station in Ohio (俄亥俄州) because he had to use the bathroom. Instead of turning off the engine (引擎) and taking the key with him, the driver left the bus running. And he forgot to set the brake (制动器) because he was in a hurry. “It was cold outside, and I didn’t want the kids to get cold while I was using the bathroom,” he told a police officer.
The bus slowly started moving away from the gas station. As the bus picked up speed, the kids began shouting and crying. Ten-year-old Jake ran forward to the driver’s seat and held the steering wheel (方向盘). He pressed hard on the brake pedal (踏板) and managed to stop the bus as it came nearer to a river bed. Jake turned off the engine at last. After the police arrived at the scene, they praised Jake for his great effort.
“That is one cool kid,” said the police officer. “I told him he would make a great police officer when he grew up.”
Jake wasn’t very excited with what he had done. He said that stopping the bus was easy just like playing Grand Theft Auto III, which was his favorite action video game. The bus driver was taken to the police station. He was at first charged (指控) with “leaving a child alone while motor is running.” The police officer said he hoped to upgrade the charge because of the number of children (twenty) on the bus.
“Whatever he is charged with,” the police officer said, “I will see that he never drives a bus again.”
