24、 Mark Twain once said, “everyone talks about the weather, but no one ever does anything about it.” This was true in his days. But it may not be the case in today’s world. In fact, humans have found many different ways to control the weather.
Cloud seeding (云催化) is a kind of technology that can control rain. It is done by spreading chemicals like dry ice or silver iodide (碘化银) inside of clouds, either by rocket or airplane. This changes the amount of water inside the clouds, which helps to control the amount of rain, the time when it rains and even where it rains.
This technology has helped to solve drought. It has also played a key role during important events. For example, China used cloud seeding in Beijing just before the 2008 Olympic Games in order to stop rain from falling during the event.
However, scientists are still debating how to use this technology. On one hand, it is believed that it might have side effects. For example, silver iodide may be bad for the environment. On the other hand, no two clouds are the same, so every new experiment introduces new conditions.
Using lasers ( 激 光 ) to change the weather has been tested in a lab, and it has been fairly successful on a small scale. Scientists are still trying to figure out how to use it in the real world, and it could be a new way to stop climate change.
In addition to controlling rain, scientists have also tried to find ways to weaken storms and hurricanes (飓风). Scientists at the US National Hurricane Centre Headquarters think it might be possible to control hurricanes by using lasers. Others believe that burning petroleum ( 石油) in a hurricane’s path could slow the storms down.

27、Sleep is like food for the brain. Enough sleep helps the body and brain grow and develop. According to the National Sleep Foundation in the US, adults need seven to nine hours of sleep every night. For students aged 10 to 17, a healthy amount is about eight to nine hours per night.
But many students don’t get enough sleep because of early school start times and heavy homework. About 80 percent of middle school students don’t get enough sleep, the China Youth and Children Research Center reported. For some students, they want to sleep early, but they keep worrying about their schoolwork and can’t fall asleep quickly. For others, they may even have insomnia which might keep them awake all night.
These sleeping problems greatly affect people’s lives. Experts have shown that lack of sleep for teenagers leads to poor grades. Students without enough sleep cannot pay attention in class or do well in sports. Also, the lack of sleep may make them depressed (沮丧的).
Luckily, with good sleep habits, it is easier to fall asleep. Some of these good habits include avoiding drinks that make people excited late in the day, going to sleep at the same time each night, and sleeping in a comfortable place that is dark, quiet, and neither too warm nor too cold.
【1】If Li Hong is 15years old, how much sleep does she need every night?
A. 10-12 hours. B. 8-9 hours.
C. 7-8 hours. D. Less than 7 hours.
【2】______ if teens don’t get enough sleep?

B. Their bodies and brains might grow better.
C. They might feel upset.
D. They might not be able to finish their schoolwork.
【3】The underlined word “insomnia” means “_______” in Chinese.
A. 健忘症 B. 肥胖症
C. 多动症 D. 失眠症
【4】Which of the following are good sleeping habits?
A. a and b B. a and c
C. b and c D. b and d

d. Drinking something that makes you excited.
28、根据下面短文内容,在短文的空格中填上一个恰当的词,使短文完整,通顺。
Have you noticed that the phrase “You’re welcome” has largely been taken place by two new words — “No problem.”?
Here is an example:
Shop assistant, “Here’s your change, Madam.” Me, “Thank you.” Shop assistant, “No problem.”
But to me, “No problem” is a 【1】. I want to be thanked for going to a shop. I don’t want this automatic (机械的) reply. “You are welcome” means “You are welcome to shop here; thanks for 【2】 us to help you.” When I hear “no problem”, what I think is: “You’re not helping me. I’ll go somewhere else next time.”
There are some 【3】 annoying phrases, of course. But this one especially seems to just push people to one side. It seems to say, “I’ve taken care of you, so now leave me alone.” It seems that 【4】 the shop assistant wants to say is that you are actually not “welcome”.
It’s part of a whole, lazy culture. People don’t notice each other. People can’t be bothered (打搅). People sit 【5】 in cafes, but they don’t talk. They just look at their mobile phones. If you ask one of these people to move their chair a little 【6】 you can sit down, they reply, “No problem.” I don’t feel that means “You’re welcome to 【7】 the table.” I feel it means “No problem that you only bothered me a bit.”
Lots of people think this phrase is mainly used by younger people, just 【8】 another word “whatever”. But actually, “no problem” crosses generations (一代人). It’s taken hold in a way that fits no single group of people. There is “no problem” wherever you go. Next time you’re about to say those two words, stop for a minute. Make eye contact, and say with a smile: “You’re welcome.”
Be a bit more polite? No problem.
