21、The search for beauty spans centuries and continents. Paintings of Egyptians dating back over 4,000 years show both men and women painting their nails and wearing makeup. In 18th-century France, wealthy noblemen wore large wigs (假发)of long, white hair to make themselves attractive. Today, people continue to devote a lot of time and money to their appearance.
There is at least one good reason for the desire to be attractive:beauty is power. Studies suggest that good-looking people make more money, get called on more often in class, and are regarded as friendlier.
But what exactly is beauty? It's difficult to describe it clearly, and yet we know it when we see it. And our awareness of it may start at a very early age. In one set of studies, six-month-old babies were shown a series of photographs. The faces on the pictures had been rated for attractiveness by a group of college students. In the studies, the babies spent more time looking at the attractive faces than the unattractive ones.
The idea that even babies can judge appearance makes perfect sense to many researchers. In studies by psychologists, men consistently showed a preference for women with larger eyes, fuller lips, and a smaller nose and chin while women prefer men with large shoulders and a narrow waist. According to scientists, the mind unconsciously tells men and women that these traits —the full lips, clear skin , strong shoulders —equal health and genetic well-being.
Not everyone thinks the same way, however. “Our hardwiredness can be changed by all sorts of expectations —mostly cultural,” says C. Loring Brace, an anthropologist at the University of Michigan. What is considered attractive in one culture might not be in another. Look at most Western fashion magazines: the women on the pages are thin, but is this "perfect" body type for women worldwide? Scientists' answer is no; what is considered beautiful is subjective and varies around the world. They found native peoples in southeast Peru preferred shapes regarded overweight in Western cultures.
For better or worse, beauty plays a role in our lives. But it is extremely difficult to describe exactly what makes one person attractive to another. Although there do seem to be certain physical traits considered universally appealing, it is also true that beauty does not always keep to a single, uniform standard. Beauty really is, as the saying goes, in the eye of the beholder.

22、 At the start of nearly every doctor’s visit, chances are that you will be asked to get your weight measured. But many conversations around weight have become an obstacle, not a help, in the campaign to make people healthier. Doctors’ recommendations to drop pounds are still extremely common, even though using body size as a one-size-fits-all way can lead to ignorance of the complexity of an individual’ s particular physiology.
Many studies have shown heavier people are at higher risk for high blood pressure, diabetes and other diseases. But the big picture is not the whole picture. Researchers have identified some fat people considered to be “metabolically healthy”. However, one interesting report published in 2016 found that unhealthy thin people were twice as likely to get diabetes as healthy fat people. Clearly, although the association between being overweight and disease is very real, individual experience can vary greatly and depends on personal physiology and behavior.
Despite such findings, among the more terrible effects of weight-central health care are the increased shame experienced by the overweight. The well-reported experience of numerous fat people is that doctors often set weight loss without examining them. Research over the past two decades has shown that health professionals have negative attitudes toward fat people. Not only that but doctors’ appointments with fat patients are shorter on average, and some refuse to see these patients at all, as the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported in 2011. Such prejudiced practices keep people from regular annual exams and prevent the detection of serious hidden conditions.
To practice evidence-based medicine, doctors should stop relying on weight alone as an indicator of health and quickly setting out weight loss to treat health diseases. Instead, doctors should focus on behavioral changes to improve health outcomes. People of all sizes are entitled to evidence-based treatments and keep them healthy.

23、Though Grant and I are typically more traditional, we actually met online, through Facebook. As a single mom, it was always a nightmare trying to date, as I have full custody (抚养权) of my daughter and very little “me” time. But that wasn’t the only challenge we had to overcome as a couple -we also lived four and a half hours away from one another. But when two people are meant to be, life sure has an interesting way of bringing two people together.
Nine months ago, I randomly added him on Facebook. After weeks of messaging back and forth, we had our first four-hour phone call, and the long call led to our first date.
In the six and half months that we dated, I got to witness an attractive, charming bachelor become a positive, loving and selfless father to my little girl.
On the day of our engagement(订婚), he took my daughter and I to breakfast. I had a feeling that he was planning something. But after anxiously eating breakfast, hoping and praying he wasn’t going to get down on one knee in the middle of a very busy Saturday morning brunch, we left. Then, we walked a mile into the woods. It was quite the adventure. Finally, we got to a wooden bridge in the middle of the forest and he got down on one knee.
After proposing to me, Grant got back to propose to my daughter. He said, “Adrianna, can I be your daddy, to promise to love and protect you for the rest of your life?” As soon as he spoke those sweet words, I once again broke down in tears.
My daughter replied in complete shock, “thank you!” He then presented her with a beautiful heart necklace. The necklace symbolizes a piece of his heart that she can always carry with her.
Our beautiful little family of two has become three. My daughter and I both got our fairy tale ending.

24、I used to work in an office, which had a locust tree (槐树) growing outside the window. It had grown into a tall tree and must have been there for a long time. The tree blocked the view and made the office seem dull. Unfortunately, this happened to be the room assigned (分配) to me, and I was depressed by it for quite some time.
When the first spring came, everything was green except the locust tree. I felt very happy because I had thought it had died!
One morning, when I opened the window for some fresh air, I unexpectedly smelt a familiar sweet scent floating into my office which I could not name. Suddenly, I realized it was the locust tree! The tree that I thought dead was in full bloom!
From then on, I usually came to the office very early to see dew (露珠) forming on the locust tree blossoms, and was eager to see spring again every year.
During summer, the green leaves provided shade protecting me from the harsh (刺眼的) sunlight, but allowing enough light in to make it pleasant. In autumn, the leaves turned many different colors. Its beauty touched my soul. Many times, I thought to take photos but never did. Then, I had to leave in a hurry. Later in life, it became a great regret that I had not done so.
Actually, many times in our lives, we think we own something and thus do not value it. We don’t feel regretful until we lose it one day! Moreover, sometimes, we have to accept the things we don’t want and need to discover the hidden beauty to find unexpected joy!
