21、Red pandas are native to the high forests of Asia. They are only a little bigger than a house cat and considered to be endangered. Scientists reported last month that not all red pandas belong to the same species. There are two different species of this animal, not just one, a study found.
The scientists reported finding major differences in three genetic markers between Chinese red pandas and Himalayan red pandas. Scientists identified the markers after studying DNA from 65 of the creatures. DNA carries genetic information for the development, growth and reproduction of living things.
Recording the existence of two separate species could help guide efforts for protecting red pandas, scientists added. “Chinese red pandas live in northern Myanmar, as well as southeastern Tibet, Sichuan, and Yunnan provinces in China. Himalayan red pandas are native to Nepal, India, Bhutan and southern Tibet in China,” the researchers said.
Researchers Yibo Hu and Fuwen Wei led the study. Their findings appeared in the magazine Science Advances.
Scientists had earlier suggested there were two species of red panda. But the new study was the first to provide the genetic information necessary to allow such a judgment. International experts guess a total population of around 10,000 red pandas in the wild. The two species differ in color and skull shape. The Himalayan red panda is the less of the two.
Major threat stored pandas include deforestation and habitat loss. While they have similar names, red pandas and giant pandas are not closely related. Giant pandas are one of the world’s eight bear species. Red pandas are sometimes called living fossils because they have no close living relatives. They are the only remaining member of their mammalian family.

22、Fish genetically engineered to glow (发光) blue, green, or red under blacklight have been a big hit among aquarium (水族馆) lovers for years. But the pet is not restricted to glass displays anymore. The glowing fish have escaped fish farms in southeastern Brazil and are multiplying in the streams in the Atlantic Forest, a new study shows.
The unwelcome invaders (入侵者) are well-known to scientists who have used zebrafish for developmental and genetic studies. Native to Southeast Asia, the freshwater fish were engineered to glow for research purposes in the late 1990s by putting in them genes from jellyfish and coral. In the 2000s, companies saw the potential of the glowing fish as pets.
André Magalhães, a biologist at the Federal University, first spotted the engineered zebrafish swimming in the River Basin in 2015. The waters border the largest decorative fish farms of Latin America, and Magalhães says the fish probably escaped some of the farms’ ponds.
The Brazilian waters don’t have any local predators (捕食者) for zebrafish and the fish are reproducing all year round, with a peak during the rainy season. But the transgenic fish seem to achieve sexual maturity earlier than their ancestors, which allows them to reproduce more and spread faster. The invaders are also eating well: a diversified diet of native insects and algae. Before long, Magalhães says, the fish could become plentiful enough to directly affect local: species by competing for food or preying on them.
Tuckett, a researcher in Florida, says the Brazilian detection “should be a wake-up call” for fish producers and natural resource managers in Brazil. But he suspects the transgenic fish will encounter predators as they move to larger bodies of water. And the animals’ bright colors will make them disadvantaged.
For now, the glowing fish “could be considered little weeds growing up out of the concrete”. Tuckett says. Magalhães likes the metaphor, but points out that even little weeds can grow to cause a lot of damage.
