四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、While many women are busy with planning their bridal showers (新娘送礼会), a baby shower usually comes as a complete surprise. A baby shower is a party where a pregnant (怀孕的) woman is “showered” with gifts and good wishes. A baby shower is usually given by a close female friend or a relative of the mother-to-be. Sometimes co-workers of a pregnant person will also hold a baby shower for her.

The baby shower is usually given when the mother-to-be is between 6 and 9 months pregnant. Predicting the date of a baby’s birth isn’t always exact. Sometimes a baby shower can also happen after the baby is born. A baby shower can be held in someone’s home or outside, like in a restaurant or a catering hall. Traditionally only women are invited to a baby shower. However, more and more baby showers are also including the father-to-be.

Like a bridal shower, a mother-to-be will register (登记) a wish list of things she wants at one or several stores. This list usually includes things the mother wants for her baby like clothes, diapers and even furniture. This way friends and family members can go to the stores and buy something from the list. Registering helps make sure that there aren’t repeat items, like 30 bottles when a new mom only needed 15.

At a baby shower, people can give cards with wishes for the new baby and mom. Most of these cards also include money or gift cards to help the mom-to-be buy whatever else she needs for the baby. Sometimes there are games as well. In one game everyone guesses the date of the baby. Another game lets people taste baby food and guess the flavor.

1Who was only invited to a baby shower traditionally?

    A. Men.   B. Children.   C. Women.   D. Pregnant women.

2Why does a mother-to-be register a wish list of things?

    A. To prevent others from buying the repeat items.

    B. To remind herself to buy some items for the party.

    C. To remember to buy the necessary things for her friends.

    D. To invite friends or family members to the baby shower.

3What can friends and family members do at a baby shower?

    A. Play games.   B. Get some money and gifts.

    C. Feed the baby.   D. Register a wish list of things.

4According to the passage, we know that ______.

    A. the baby shower only happens at home

    B. the baby shower never takes place after the baby is born

    C. people have baby showers instead of bridal showers now

    D. people hold the baby shower to send wishes to the mother-to-be

  • 25、Mickey Mouse’s ears are well known all over the world, and this year will be an especially fun one for Disney. The company is celebrating 60 years since its first theme park, Disneyland, opened in California, US in 1955.

Disney has opened many more parks all over the world since it made history in California. Shanghai Disneyland is expected to open in 2016, bringing Disney’s popular parks here to the Chinese mainland for the first time.

So why has Disneyland been so popular for 60 years? Well, it’s described as “the Happiest Place on Earth” and “a place for the young and young at heart”. Many Americans have grown up with the parks, as ex—Disneyland president Paul Pressler said in 1995: “There is an emotional relationship that people have with this park.”

Disneyland was one of the first theme parks anywhere in the world that had “lands” and rides with themes. Disney’s storytelling in rides like roller coasters(过山车) is a big reason for their parks’ success. “We tell a story in everything we do,” Pressler said. Disney rides such as The seven Dwarves Mine Train and Peter Pan’s Flight come from its movies. One ride from its 2013 hit movie Frozen will surely be coming soon, perhaps at the new Shanghai Disneyland.

Disney’s parks haven’t always been popular everywhere, however. When Disneyland Paris opened in 1992, some French people felt that American culture was invading(入侵)France. But still, the park stayed open and today it is a popular place for European visitors.

Whatever you may think of them, you can’t say that on their 60th birthday, Disney’s parks aren’t still going strong. How many Disney theme parks will you have visited by the time their 70th birthday comes around?

【1】This year will be especially fun for Disney because____.

    A. it is going to celebrate its 60th birthday

Mrs. Lane was living alone. She had to do a lot of housework herself. However, she was too old to mow(修剪) her lawn(草坪). Then a big trouble found her. She let the grass grow over 18 inches high and it broke the law in her city. As a result, she was in danger of paying lots of money or even going to prison. • 27、Do as the Romans Do

The customs in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host, he always puts more food onto my plates as soon as I have emptied it. That often discomforts me greatly. I have to eat the food even if I don’t want to, because it is considered bad manners in the West to leave one’s food on the plate. I have already noticed that when a Chinese sits at an American’s dinner party, he very often refuses the offer of food or drink though he is in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners in China, but it is not in the West at all. In the United States, it is impolite to keep asking someone again and again or insist on his accepting something. Americans have a direct way of speaking. If they want something, they will ask for it. If not, they will say, “No, thanks.” When an American is fed with beer by the host, for example, he might say, “No, thanks. I’ll take some diet, Pepsi-Cola(百事可乐)if you have it. ”That is what an American will do. So when you go to the United States, you had better remember the famous saying: When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

【1】From the passage, we can know that the Chinese are usually ________ to the guests.

    A. very hot    B. rude

    C. impolite D. cold

2When a foreigner has dinner with a Chinese host, he often feels _______.

    A. pleasant B. uncomfortable

    C. satisfied     D. happy

3Why does a Chinese often refuse the offer of food or drink at a dinner party?

    A. He has had enough.

    B. He is shy.

    C. He is afraid that others will laugh at him.

    D. He thinks it’s polite to do that.

4When an American wants something to eat or drink at a dinner, he will _______.

    A. ask for it boldly

    B. refuse the offer

    C. ask for it directly

    D. express himself indirectly

5“When in Rome, do as the Romans do “means “________”.

    A. When you got to Rome, you should act as the Romans do

    B. When you stay in Rome, you should do as the Romans do

    C. When you are in a new country, you should do as the locals do

    D. Romans can be an example for you
