21、A French power producer, HDF Energy, expects its hydrogen energy power station in Namibia to produce electricity by 2024. And HDF Energy announced the plan for the southern African country publicly recently. This plant in Namibia would be Africa’s first. HDF Energy is also considering new projects across Africa.
The project is expected to cost about $181 million. Once operated, it will supply electrical power, 24 hours a day throughout the year. It will increase the electricity supply to Namibia, which imports 40 percent of power from neighboring South Africa. Namibia is one of the world’s sunniest and least densely-populated countries. It wants to use its great potential for solar and wind energy to produce green hydrogen power. And Namibia wants to become a renewable energy center in Africa.
Hydrogen power is considered clean when it is made with reproducible power. It is seen as an important way to reduce carbon-based fuels in the energy industry. The project will use solar panels(电池板)to produce electricity. Electrolyzers produce hydrogen which can be easily stored by using electricity to separate hydrogen from oxygen in water.
Another company named Hyphen Hydrogen Energy is in talks with Namibia’s government to secure an agreement for a planned hydrogen project. European Union says they also plan a deal with the country to support its green hydrogen industry. The German government has already agreed to invest $41.8 million in Namibia’s hydrogen plan. European nations are trying to reduce their dependence on Russian energy. Obeth Kandjoze, director-general of Namibia’s National Planning Commission said EU financial support was likely to be limited, but a financial deal could bring in other investors.

23、 “Baby signing” classes designed to improve language skills actually make little difference to children’s development, according to new research. Scholars claimed there was no evidence that the lessons — in which babies are taught simple gestures (手势) to communicate their everyday needs — enable children to talk quicker than others.
In a threeyear study, it was claimed that the method could make mothers more responsive to their children’s behaviors but failed to actually increase babies’ vocabulary. An active home environment in which parents regularly talk to their children was much more effective, researchers warned. The findings will cast doubt on the movement — born in the United States — which has proved hugely popular among middleclass parents.
Baby signing is now a multimillion pound industry, with thousands of mothers and fathers paying for classes, books and DVDs. Young children are taught simple gestures for words and phrases to communicate their everyday needs, such as “milk” “more” “all gone” “food” and “tired”. It is claimed that the technique brings great benefits, including improving the relationship between mother and child, helping language development and even increasing a child’s intelligence.
But research from Hertfordshire University has found no evidence that using baby signing helps to improve their language development. The scholars added, “Baby signing has become big business and mothers, particularly firsttime mums or less confident parents, feel the pressure to do it. Some even think ‘if I don’t do it and everyone else does, I must be a bad mother’.”
Nevertheless, baby signing experts hardly sustained the findings. Wendy Moat, 45, who has been running baby signing classes for three years, said that the classes encouraged speech development, and may help develop a higher IQ. She said, “So many mums say that their children talk so well because they did baby signing when they were babies. Parents wouldn’t say it if they didn’t believe it.”
【1】Which of the following may be the effective way to help sharpen children’s language skills?
A.Creating an inactive home environment. B.Talking to them as much as possible.
C.Buying them more books and DVDs. D.Using simple words and phrases.
【2】According to the text, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Some new mothers choose baby signing classes just following others.
B.Baby signing classes haven’t any practical value according to the study.
C.Taught simple gestures, young children can definitely express their everyday needs.
D.Baby signing classes have proved hugely popular among parents .
【3】The underlined word “sustained” in the last paragraph means “_______”.
A.acquired B.ignored C.supported D.challenged
【4】What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Baby signing classes teach children to communicate effectively.
B.Baby signing classes increase children’s intelligence.
C.Baby signing classes improve the relationship between mother and child.
D.Baby signing classes fail to improve children’s language skills.
24、When Alexander Tsao was climbing the walls at a gym near his home in Redmond, Washington, he noticed that the ropes were frequently replaced with new ones. Tsao wondered what happened to the old ropes. He asked the gym owners and found out they had to be thrown away regularly due to safety rules. He was surprised to find that so many ropes were sent to landfills.
“This discovery made me want to find a solution to the environmental issue of climbing rope waste,” Tsao tells. He thought of possible ways to recycle the ropes. Then he decided to turn them into leashes for dogs and donate the profits to local animal rescue groups.
Once he set his plan, Tsao contacted all the climbing gyms in Washington State, telling his idea of recycling old climbing ropes. Some were doubtful at first, but after Tsao’s explanation they agreed to donate. Then Tsao and his volunteers would regularly go to gyms to collect used ropes.
There were months of testing and designing his products and preparing documents to become a nonprofit organization called Rocks 2 Dogs. “When I started my nonprofit business, people hadn’t fully caught on to what I was doing. They seldom paid attention to it. But eventually by using social media to promote my product and making connections in my community, I was able to gain attention for Rocks 2 Dogs,” Tsao says. “Now, I receive many positive responses. I am grateful that people are so supportive of my business.”
“We have made and sold over a thousand leashes, which add up to over 10,000 feet of rope saved from landfills,” says Tsao. To date, the organization has raised more than $35,000. Much of the money has been donated to animal shelters. Tsao was interviewed by three local newspapers. The Washington Post featured him in a story. All that attention increased orders. Since then, he has had clients from 41 states. This fall, he plans to attend McGill University. He says, “I hope to continue Rocks 2 Dogs with the help and support of my family, friends, and the greater community.”

The most powerful earth quake in the past 40 years caused a tsunami that crashed into coastlines across Asia yesterday, killing more than 6,500 people in Indonesia, India, Thailand, Malaysia, and at least four other countries. Fishermen, tourists, hotels, homes, and cars were swept away by huge waves caused by the strong earthquake that reached a magnitude of 9.0. The undersea quake struck around 7:00 a.m., Sunday off the west coast of Indonesia’s Sumatra Island. In that area alone, at least 1,870 people were killed.
In Sri Lanka, some 1,600 kilometres west of the quake centre, the number of deaths stood at 2,498, and one million more were affected by the tsunami, government officials said. Indian officials said as many as 1,900 had been killed along the southern coast. Another 254 were found dead in Thailand and 54 in three other countries. In southern Thailand, 1,900 people were hurt and many more were missing, local officials said. I was having breakfast with my three children when water started filling my home. We had to leave everything and run to safety, said Chandra Theeravit, a local Thai woman.
Thousands of people are still missing, and the number of deaths is expected to grow even higher over the next few days. Foreign aid is being organised for the tsunami-hit countries. However, dangerous conditions and damaged roads will make it difficult to deliver food and supplies.
