    Make Stress Work for You

Stress can come from all directions. We live in a world filled with stress. Rather than only looking for ways to change the stress-filled situations, look for stress that can work for you. The following are suggestions to make stress work in your favor.

1    . Colors of the walls, floor coverings, and furniture can reduce stress. Cooling greens and blues are positive colors that can reduce stress and create a sense of well-being.

2    . Take time to recognize signs of stress like anger, work and sleep habits. As you understand these signs, you are beginning to know how to make stress work.

3  . We can accept what we cannot change by changing what we can. Make choices that are realistic, not beyond your ability.

4   . Find out what your strengths are and focus on taking the time to do a project built on them. If you take on too many projects, you will most probably lose control and meet with new stress.

四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、In Britain you are allowed to drive a car when you are seventeen. You have to get a special two-year driving license before you can start. When you are learning, someone with a full license always has to be in the car with you because you aren't allowed to drive the car on the road alone. You don't have to go to a driving school--a friend can teach you. The person with you isn't allowed to take the money for the lesson unless he's got a teacher's license.

Before you are allowed to have a full license, you have to take a driving test. You can take a test in your own car, but it has to be fit for the road. In the test you have to drive round for about half an hour and then answer a few questions. If you don't pass the test, you are allowed to take it again a few weeks later if you want to. In 1970 a woman passed her fortieth test after 212 driving lessons. When you've passed your test, you don't have to take it again, and you are allowed to go on driving as long as you like, if you are healthy. Britain's oldest driver was a man who drove in 1974 at the age of 100.

Before 1904 everyone was allowed to drive, even children. Then from 1904 car drivers had to have a license. But they didn't have to take a test until 1935. On the early days of car driving, before 1878, cars weren't allowed to go faster than four miles an hour, and someone had to lead the car with a red flag.

  • 25、   Could cities that float on the sea solve the problems caused by floods and provide food for the world?

Some scientists think so. The idea is already being tested and they believe that floating cities will provide more homes for a growing population, without having to use land needed to grow food. And they believe floating areas will allow more food to be grown, so that no one in the world is hungry.

In some places, cities that float on the sea are already being planned. A company in the Netherlands called DeltaSync thinks that the sea cities will save the world, with more than one in ten people living in them.

They say sea cities solve many problems the world faces in the 21st century, like not having enough land, more and more people needing homes, fossil fuels running low and the increasingly serious problems caused by floods.

DeltaSync says building in the desert is not possible because there is not enough water and that developing ways for people to live in space is still too expensive. So they believe the answer is our oceans, which cover over two thirds of the Earth’s surface. Their plans for floating areas include using algae (海藻) to produce fuel and food.

More than a quarter of the land in the Netherlands already lies underwater and scientists there have spent years trying to find ways to deal with it. In the city of Rotterdam they already have floating homes.

Bart Roeffen from DeltaSync says, “We have plans for neighborhoods including roads and, in the end, I believe we can build floating cities on the sea.”

1Which of the following is the advantage of the cities that DeltaSync wants to build?

A.Providing more jobs for people. B.Satisfying more people’s housing needs.

C.Supplying enough water to people. D.Making travel in space possible.

2What can we learn about the Netherlands?

A.There are floating homes in one of its cities. B.It has found many fossil fuels recently.

C.Two thirds of its land is covered by water. D.Its population is increasing quickly.

3What does Bart Roeffen think of his company’s future plans?

A.He doubts them. B.He has no idea about them.

C.He is uncertain about them. D.He is hopeful of them.

4What is the best title for the passage?

A.Will there be enough water? B.Is it possible to live in the desert?

C.Will sea cities save the world? D.Is it expensive to build floating cities?

  • 27、How long are you willing to wait for a webpage to open before you start to lose your patience? Half a minute? A few seconds?

Google engineers have discovered that even 400 milliseconds as short as the blink (眨眼) of an eye is too long for most Internet users.

A millisecond is one thousandth of a second. People hardly notice such a small time difference, but it does cause them to stop searching, reported The New York Times.

“Of course you don’t like to wait,” said Arvind Jain, a Google engineer. “Every millisecond matters.”

Now, millions of smart-phones and computers are always sending out information. With so many people downloading (下载) maps, sports videos, news and restaurant recommendations, you can get online “traffic jams (交通阻塞)”. Users are expecting faster and faster service.

Google found that if one website is 250 milliseconds slower than another website, then people will visit it less often. This is why technology companies try their best to be the fastest.

Achieving a higher speed has always been part of the history of the Internet.

In the 1990s, when the World Wide Web first started to become popular, it was very crowded and slow; people called it the “World Wide Wait”. But engineers managed to fight the problem with new inventions. They improved software so it would work more smoothly; they made computer servers all around the world nearer to users; all these increased speed.

Now we can enjoy much faster Internet. Major search engines (引擎) such as Google and Microsoft’s Bing usually find search results in less than a second. But they will need to keep fighting to keep up with the developing needs of Internet users.

【1】What does the report of The New York Times indicate (暗示)?

    A. A millisecond is one thousandth of a second.

    B. A millisecond has nothing to do with the Internet speed.

    C. A millisecond really makes a difference to the Internet users.

    D. 400 milliseconds is not so long for most Internet users.

【2】How does the writer feel about the future of the Internet speed?

    A. Excited. B. Interested.

    C. Confident. D. Discouraged.

【3】What can be the best title of this passage?

    A. Don’t make me “www.wait”.

    B. Search engines work faster.

    C. Traffic jams keep us waiting.

    D. The World Wide Web becomes popular.
