  • 22、It’s an all too common story: A young child walks off during a party and falls into a backyard pool. No one notices she’s missing——until it’s too late. When Grayson Barron learned of such a disaster in a friend’s neighborhood, the 18-year-old immediately jumped into problem-solving mode. The new pool alarm system he’s just developed sends out several types of warnings when someone or something splashes into an unguarded pool.

Grayson calls his floating system “The Buoy (浮标)”. A large splash will trigger its built-in sensors to send out a series of alerts——a flashing light, an alarm that sounds like a loud doorbell and a text to the owner’s mobile phone.

Grayson’s is not the first pool alarm, but the teen says others all have disadvantages. Some are very costly. Others can become stuck in corners of a pool. He wanted a low-cost option that was reliable (可靠的). Grayson 3-D printed the main part of his device, then attached sensors. He then equipped the device with a light, a speaker and a wireless network that can send texts. A battery, which is hooked up to solar panels, keeps the system charged for months.

While hard to design, the new system “is so easy to use,” says Grayson. “All I do is turn it on and throw it into a pool.” After that, he says, it just “does its thing”.

【1】Why was a child falling into a pool mentioned in the first paragraph?

A.To remind the importance of safety.

B.To prepare for the topic of the text.

    C.To praise Grayson Barron.

    D.To show accidents are everywhere.

【2】What can you learn from the last paragraph?

A.Grayson’s pool alarm can work by itself after being turned on and thrown into the pool.

B.The system of Grayson’s pool alarm is out of control.

C.Grayson’s pool alarm must be operated by man.

D.Grayson’s pool alarm is easy to design and easy to use.

【3】Which of the following is the disadvantage of Grayson’s pool alarm?

    A.It is very expensive.

B.It s easy to get stuck.

    C.It easy to lose balance.

    D.It s difficult to design.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Teens’ Tech Will Send Alerts to Reduce Deaths

B.Grayson Barron Saved a Lot of Lives

C.Many People Are Drowned Every Year

    D.Grayson Has Invented Much Device

  • 23、When Jagadish Mahendran heard about his friend’s daily challenges navigating as a blind person, he immediately thought of his artificial intelligence work.

“For years I had been teaching robots to see things,” he said. Mahendran, a computer vision researcher at the University of Georgia’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence, found it ironic that he had helped develop machines — including a shopping robot that could “see” stocked shelves and a kitchen robot — but nothing for people with low or no vision.

After exploring existing technology for blind and low vision people like camera-enabled canes or GPS-connected smart-phone apps, he came up with a backpack-based AI design that uses cameras to provide instantaneous alerts.

“The camera data is processed right away as it’s captured,” he said.

That data makes it to a Bluetooth-enabled earphone that warns the user of any obstructions or route changes. Along with a backpack, the user also has to wear a vest and fanny pack, which houses the AI equipment, sensors, camera, and GPS.

Currently, the vest includes hidden Intel sensors and a front-facing camera, while the backpack and fanny pack house a small computing unit (运算单元) and power source. The Luxonis OAK-D unit, located in the vest and fanny pack, is an AI device that processes camera data almost instantly to interpret the world around the user.

Mahendran’s AI backpack isn’t for sale, but he says he is going to start a GoFundMe to equip any blind pedestrians who want to use the system.

【1】What does the underlined word “instantaneous” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Intelligent

    B.Immediate

    C.Accurate

    D.Effective

【2】What do we know about Mahendran?

A.He thinks artificial intelligence is of little use to blind people.

B.He was not successful in helping people with eyesight trouble at first.

C.The AI backpack that he has developed is the best.

D.His AI backpack will be put on the market soon.

【3】What question is answered in Paragraph 5 and Paragraph 6?

    A.What is a Luxonis OAK-D unit?

B.How is the AI backpack developed?

C.How is the captured data transferred to a Bluetooth-enabled earphone?

D.What does the AI backpack device consist of?

【4】What is the purpose of the text?

A.To prove that a helping hand is everywhere.

B.To explain the new trend of AI

C.To introduce a new AI device.

D.To give suggestions on how to help the blind.

  • 24、Families should reduce exposure to synthetic chemicals found in food colorings, preservatives and packaging materials as a growing body of research shows they may harm children's health, according to a policy statement and technical report from the American Academy of Pediatrics released online.

The statement also suggests improvements to the food additives regulatory system, including updating the scientific foundation of the U. S. Food and Drug Administration safety assessment program and retesting all previously approved chemicals.

    Q&A with the lead author

We asked Leonardo Trasande, Council on Environmental Health member and lead author of the policy statement, to tell us more about these concerns.

Q: What are the growing number of studies showing us?

A: Over the past two decades, an accumulating body of science suggests some food additives can interfere with a child's hormones, growth and development.

Potentially harmful effects of food additives are of special concern for children because they are more sensitive to chemical exposures because they eat and drink more, relative to body weight, than adults do and are still growing and developing. An early injury to their organ systems can have lifelong and permanent consequences.

Q: What additives does the statement highlight?

A: The additives of most concern, based on rising research evidence cited in the report, include: Bisphenols, such as BPA, used to harden plastic containers and line metal cans, can act like estrogen in the body which may potentially change the timing of puberty, decrease, fertility, increase body fat and affect the nervous and immune systems. BPA is now banned in baby bottles.

Phthalates, which make plastic and vinyl tubes used in industrial food production flexible, may affect male genital development, increase childhood obesity and contribute to cardiovascular disease. In 2017, the Consumer Product Safety Commission banned the use or some phthalates in child-care products such as teething rings.

【1】According to the American Academy of Pediatrics' report, people should _______to cope with the problem of food additives.

A.reduce the usage of food additives and establish new food protection system

B.update the food safety assessment program and check the approved chemicals again

C.improve the food additives regulatory system and retest all approved chemicals

D.try to avoid food additives in daily life and revise relevant rules on food additives

【2】Leonardo Trasande holds he view that food additives do more harm to children than adults because study shows ________.

A.children are more sensitive to what they eat and drink than adults

B.children usually eat and drink more unhealthy food than adults

C.children are just too young and weak to protect themselves

D.children's organs are easier to be damaged and hard to recover

【3】How many specific kinds of harmful effect caused by the additives are mentioned in the passage?

    A.2.

    B.7.

    C.8.

    D.1.
