  • 21、What happens when you make a call but no one picks up? You won't get any official notice if someone blocks your calls — but you can make an educated guess by looking for these signs.

    The sound of silence

When you block a number, you no longer receive calls or text messages from that person. 【1】 But it's also great for personal reasons.

The first indication that something's up is the most obvious: You call and send text messages, but you get no response. For most cases, texts you send will appear to go through usually, but the person won't receive them. 【2】

    Count the rings before voicemail

It's a normal call when you call and hear the usual number of rings before getting voicemail. But if the person has blocked you, here's the big indicator. You only hear a single ring before being turned to voicemail.

【3】 It may just mean the person is talking to someone else, or has the phone off. Try again later. If the one-ring and straight-to-voicemail pattern remains, your number is probably blocked.

    Automated responses

If you make a call and receive an automated message along the lines of "the customer is unavailable," that person may have blocked you. The messages can vary, but the result is the same. 【4】

Again, a blocked number isn't the only reason for a message like this. But it's a strong indication you've been blocked.

    It could be something else

Don't jump to conclusions even if you suspect your number is blocked.   【5】 There could be a network problem, or the battery is dead, or they didn't pay their bill on time. It happens.

Anyway, if you are in this situation, respect that person's decision if someone doesn't want to hear from you.

A.It saves me a lot of time.

    B.Your call won't go through.

C.This step helps stop unwanted spam calls

D.You could try to hide your phone number.

E.That silence is your first hint something is wrong.

F.There may be a reason why your calls aren't going through.

G.An unusual ring pattern doesn't necessarily mean a blocked number.

  • 22、   Devon Gallagher, a college graduate from Philadelphia, wants the world to know exactly where she’s been during her worldwide vacation in a special way.

The traveler, who was born with a bone disease, had her right leg amputated(截肢)at the age of four. Although the amputation caused hardships for Gallagher early on, she now treats it as an inspiration for living her best life.

To spread that message, Gallagher has taken to social media, where she shares photos of her travels across the globe, but instead of simply using a Geo-tag(智能影像定位app). She writes her location across her artificial leg before taking a picture.

Now she has been taking pictures across the Europe, which show her cycling over the canal in Amsterdam relaxing on a wall overlooking the city of Barcelona, posing with a waffle in Brussels, taking in the spectacular Parthenon temple in Athens and enjoying a river cruise in Budapest, all with the well-known locations written on her artificial leg.“I get a new leg every two years and I can choose the design on it. One day I had a sudden thought to get a chalk-board, ”Gallagher said. “My mum and grand-mother weren’t too keen on the idea, but my friends thought it was great and told me to go for it, so I did.”

Gallagher said people often stare when she’s writing on her leg, but once she shares the photos she receives only praise and encouragement. “My leg hasn’t stopped me from doing anything I’ve wanted to do,” she said. “I don’t know if it’s because of my determination to prove to myself that I can do it, but anyway, I’ve been able to keep up with my peers and lead a pretty great life.” Gallagher shows us that you should never let anything stand in the way of your dreams. If life gives you an artificial leg, make art.

1What message did Gallagher want to spread in her special way?

A.She enjoys her travelling across the globe.

B.She suffers little from her legs amputation.

C.She looks on her misfortune as another form of blessing.

D.She has exactly fallen in love with posting photos online.

2When Gallagher is writing on her leg, people often __________.

A.encourage and praise her B.look down on her

C.look attentively on her D.look up to her

3Gallagher can best be described as_______.

A.determined and creative B.friendly and generous

C.helpful and ambitious D.independent and sensible

4Which of the following might be the best title for the text?

A.Never Too Late to Share B.A Special Artificial Leg

C.An Outstanding Photographer D.Gallagher’s Summer Holiday

  • 23、For many high school students it seems that there is never enough time. There are several steps you can take to organize your time better.

First, make a to-do list every day. It makes it easy to plan any of the activities or meetings you may have in addition to homework. Be sure to set priorities (优先事项). 【1】

Use spare time wisely. Do you have study hall (自习时间)? Instead of wasting that time, read a book or do your homework. 【2】 If a friend asks you to do something and you have homework to do, realize which is more important and see your friend later.

Decide on the time that is good for you to do certain things. If you are more of a morning person, try getting up an hour earlier and do your schoolwork before school. Review your notes every day. 【3】 If you spend a few minutes at the end of every day going over what you learnt, it will mean less study time when it is time for the exam.

【4】 Studies have shown that getting enough rest helps your memory. When you are tired, everything seems more difficult. It is best to stay on a regular sleeping cycle as much as possible.

Tell your friends and family about your work timetable. Explain that you will be working at certain times and ask them not to disturb you. 【5】 You can call your friends later.

    A.Set goals for yourself.

    B.Get a good night’s sleep.

C.Do the most important tasks first.

D.Also, do not be afraid to say “no”.

E.You should finish your task on time.

F.Don’t take phone calls during the time you set aside for work.

G.Don’t wait until just before a test to try to remember everything.

  • 24、On my first day at senior high, I arrived, and I went to the gym for the pep rally. I felt nervous because I didn't know anybody. I sat down and then made a new friend, Nick.

After the pep rally, Nick and I walked out of the gym to our first class, Mr. Malouf’ s ancient civilization. We walked through the hallways looking for the classroom. As we were walking, I realized all the hallways looked like the inside of a hospital. I wasn't used to being in a school without much decoration. My junior high was covered with projects on the hallways walls.

When Nick and I met Mr. Malouf we saw that he was of average height and had brown hair. The class could tell from his introduction that he knew how everyone in the class felt. We were comforted after Mr. Malouf said "Okay, I know that this is your first day at senior high, but I still want this to be a good first class of senior high even though you are all thinking 'I'm so nervous because this is my first class!'” Afterwards, our classmates introduced themselves to the other members of the class. Next, Mr. Malouf told the class about his background. After the class, Nick and I verbally exchanged schedules and went to our next classes wherever they happened to be.

I had pictured my first day at senior high would be like the ones you see in the movies, but it wasn't.The first day at senior high in the movies usually shows a lonely teenager who is sitting by himself at lunch. But my day was so wonderful. It made me realize that people should believe that wonderful things do happen instead of always worrying about the bad things in life. I’d like to thank my friends and teachers who gave me such a good first day at senior high.

    A.It seems very simple

B.It is close to a hospital

    C.It has various gyms

D.It is similar to his junior high

【2】What impression might Mr. Malouf leave the author with on the first day?

A.He is a learned and strict teacher.

    B.He is a tall and brown-haired teacher

    C.He is a talkative and easy-going teacher.

D.He is a caring and understanding teacher

【3】What does the author learn from his first day at senior high?

    A.Face the loneliness bravely

B.Expect the good things in life

    C.Keep learning and growing

D.Believe in the importance of friendship

【4】What is the author's purpose in writing the text?

B.To introduce the daily activities at his senior high

C.To share his experience on his first day at senior high

D.To share his plans he made on the first day at senior high
